The small classes allow hands-on time to practice. Learn new computer skills or add to those you already have, even with little previous computer experience. Wednesdays, 9 to 11 a.m. March 25 to April 22 D rupal is a powerful and flexible web content management system that lets users more easily manage the content on their web sites. UMass now provides a Drupalbased service and templates to groups and departments hosting their web sites on www.umass.edu. In this 5week class, you’ll learn basic Drupal to navigate and develop your site, including adding and editing pages, changing the layout, adding image Wondering which computer class to take? Start from scratch in this beginner class and you’ll learn the basic parts of a computer, how to buy one, improve keyboarding skills, and create simple documents. You’ll get a free UMass email account and practice sending email while keeping it secure. We’ll also explore the wonders of the World Wide Web, and search it to find useful as well as fun information. Tuesdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. February 10 to April 21 No class on March 17 U Mass staff can now install MS Office 2010 or 2013 Pro for Windows on their home computers (for $9.95) or free on work computers. Wednesdays, 9 to 11 a.m. February 11 to March 11 H ave you ever wanted to wow your family with a photo greeting card you designed or impress your friends with stunning image effects? If so, then join us in this 5week beginner class using the fabulous photo editing software Adobe Photoshop. We will introduce you to the essential Photoshop tools that you can use to create amazing graphics with photos, designs and logos. Topics include an overview of common crobat Pro, part of the Adobe Creative Suite (available free for UMass staff) allows users to easily make PDFs, delete, extract, reorder or replace pages in a PDF, edit contents of PDFs, and more. In this 4session class, you will learn how to use Acrobat Pro tools to create, combine, and split PDF files, to add, highlight and replace text, and insert bookmarks, comments, buttons and links. No previous Acrobat Pro experience is required. Thursdays, 9 to 10:45 a.m. March 26 to April 23 B uild on your knowledge of Excel and learn more functions and formatting tricks. This 5-week intermediate Excel class will cover more complex formulas and useful functions, cell and conditional formatting, charts and pivot tables. You’ll learn how to format worksheets effectively, use Excel functions like IF, VLookup & Match, analyze worksheets, and create pivot tables to make your data easier to understand. Prerequisite: basic knowledge of Excel. This could be our own mystery theater, or a work of creative nonfiction that weaves characters and story lines into a campus bestseller. Who knows what we’ll come up with? We’ll work on character development, narrative, dialogue, style, impact, and writing with power—in a participatory writing project that we’ll create together. A two-collector solar hot water system can provide 60-70% of the hot water for a two- to four-person household. New state rebates help reduce costs of a two-collector solar hot water system to about $2500 or less! Solar hot water collectors can be matched up with many different backup sources. A free home site evaluation option is included. Taught by technical staff from Stiebel-Eltron in Hatfield, MA. Taught by Peter Talmage, former Greenfield Community College energy efficiency instructor. n this workshop, local energy efficiency instructor Peter Talmage will explain twelve different ways you can lower your energy usage, cut your utility bills, and help the environment. Most are free or low-cost, while others require some investment, including heat pumps. All have very good returns on your investment. You’ll also learn where to find funds to do energy earn how solar electric PV (photovoltaic) systems work and ways to make it affordable right now. Solar electricity benefits include: Reduction or elimination of your electric bill Increased resale value of your home, but not your taxes 30% federal tax credit on your PV system $1000 state tax credit Cash rebates up to $3250 Income through the sale of Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) 25 year equipment warranty System payback within 5-7 years A free home site evaluation is included. Thursdays, 12 to 1pm February 12 to March 5 Campus Center 917 M any of us know what to do when we get sick, but we’re not sure about how to be—or stay—healthy. We’ll learn about some of the wellness programs that UMass, GIC plans, and western Massachusetts have to offer. We’ll work on “health coaching”—ways to support our friends, co-workers, and family in their quest for good health, and tips for getting the support we need for own wellbeing. We’ll also learn some yoga and workplace wellness exercises and explore online wellness resources. –Leslie Fraser and Alison Ozer, instructors LUNCHTIME WALKING GROUP Mondays, 12 to 1pm April 6 to May 4 (No class April 20) Meet in front of the Recreation Center U Mass staff are encouraged to join the Rec Center’s “Get Moving” campaign by walking and talking once a week for four weeks. While we walk, we’ll learn about wellness topics and plan strategies that will keep us moving into fitness and better health.
