Sheffield Physics WRIPA summer employment scheme
We are offering four 8 week funded summer industrial R&D places. Each placement will be
working closely at the interface between university research and a technical UK company.
Each placement has its own job requirements and person specification – as listed below

Radon detector development
US company “Durridge Radon Instrumentation” are in the process of spinning out an
independent UK arm of the company to develop and sell advanced particle detectors for use
in ultrasensitive Radon gas measurement.
The student all work with staff at the new spin out company Durridge (UK) Ltd. in Sheffield
and with experts in the physics department on development of new techniques to improve
for detection of radon gas and alpha contamination of materials at very low levels. The
student will need aptitude in laboratory work, data analysis and/or computer simulations.
This is an exciting opportunity to participate in the early stages of a small start-up technology
company in Sheffield.
Person spec






Understanding of basic particle physics and detectors
Experience of, and competence in laboratory physics work
Experience in data analysis, presentation of result
Experience of computer simulation in matlab, C, C++, python or similar (desirable)
Good communication skill and team working
Enthusiastic attitude to work and ability to adapt to new situations
Location – the post will be in Sheffield and time will be spent in both the Physics department
and at the Durridge UK offices
Renumeration – 8 weeks work (£200 per week) total: £1600
Employment status – UG project bursary from the University of Sheffield
