February 22, 2015 Lent confronts us with contrasting images of water and desert. Both are powerful signs of God’s covenant with us. Jesus began his ministry by being baptized in the Jordan and driven into the desert. We, too, have passed through the waters of baptism and our own deserts of struggle and discernment. When God makes a covenant with people, things happen! What is God’s covenant with us calling us to do? Sun. 8:00 a.m. Sam Astorino, Ann. They are: Michael Adams, Eric Greenwald, Tim Hays, Judy Hooley, Steven Smith, Dennis Taylor, Amy Turnbull, Larry Wienhoff, Wilma Wilcox, Andrew Wood. The Church has discerned their readiness for reception into the Catholic Church at Easter. After these rites are celebrated here this morning, these catechumens and candidates, along with their godparents and sponsors, will be sent by our parish to the bishop for the “Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion.” Bishop John Gaydos will declare the catechumens to be “elect,” chosen by God for the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at Easter. The bishop also recognizes the desire of the baptized candidates for the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist within the Catholic community. As we hear in the Gospel for this First Sunday of Lent, Jesus was driven by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted. The Spirit prompts us to go along with him, to face our own temptations and conquer them with help of God’s grace. Pope Francis points out that one of the biggest temptations to be overcome is an attitude of indifference. If things are going well for us, there is a tendency to forget about our need for God, and to lose touch with those who are suffering. The Lord was never indifferent toward his Father or to the struggles of humanity. The Lenten ascetical practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving help us to imitate Christ in this way, by turning our focus back to love of God and our neighbor. I wish to assure you and your family of my prayerful support during these days of Lent, and invite you to pray with me for the return of those who have drifted away from the faith. It is my hope that all of us will take the opportunity to experience the tender forgiveness of God this Lent, and be renewed in heart and soul. With my best wishes and personal regards, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend John R. Gaydos Bishop of Jefferson City LENT...40 DAYS OF AWAKENING Plant a tree, bush, or a prairie. Make someone laugh. Say, “I’m sorry” ...Mean it. Try not to waste anything for one whole day. Join neighbors in a clean-up project. Send a crocus to someone from whom you are estranged. Share with someone how you pray. Read “Mountains Beyond Mountains” or “Half the Sky” during Lent. Call someone who is lonely. Help without being asked. Resist trying to be the center of attention. Be a shoulder to cry on. Go to a lecture, hear a concert, see a play. Be patient with others. Refuse to gossip. Refuse to whine. Readily forgive anyone who hurts you. Surprise yourself. Make sure your financial investments are socially responsible. If you love someone, say so. Advocate on behalf of social issue such as affordable housing. Thank God for the gift of life. Pray for a friend. Pray for an enemy. Find out what a dollar will buy in Peru or Zambia. Visit a shut-in. Give away all your “extras.” Listen to understand others point of view. Visit a church you pass regularly. Examine your conscience. Be a peacemaker at work. Spend silent time alone. Ask God to do what is best for the public person you dislike most. Affirm colleagues’ work. Refuse to judge or categorize others. Be a sign of hope for someone who is depressed. Recognize the truth about yourself - no matter how good it is. Imagine peace. Talk with a person a generation older or younger. Love a little more. - Sunday by Sunday, 2011 Vol. 20, No. 25 published by Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet EARLY BULLETIN DEADLINE… If you have anything for the March 1 bulletin, please send send it to the office by Monday, February 23rd.
