The Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto (NWRCT) invites you to support
the Minaake Awards – Toronto’s Aboriginal Women and Youth Community
Achievement Awards on April 14th, 2015 in Toronto.
In Ojibwe, “Minaake” means people who are on the good path. This event brings
the community together to celebrate local Aboriginal women and youth who have
made positive changes in their lives, significant contributions to their
communities, and are an inspiration to others.
Entering the third year of the Minaake Awards, we will repeat the success of the
previous years while expanding our outreach and promotion to over 200 business
professionals, community leaders, academics, and supporters.
As a sponsor, your brand will be proudly displayed on the event flyers, tickets,
event website and our social media. You will be highlighted as a socially-conscious
brand that is invested in enhancing the lives of urban Aboriginal women and their
children.
Please learn more about the unique sponsorship options for this event being held
at the CIBC Bank Tower in downtown Toronto. Not only does this event celebrate
our achievements, the Minaake Awards is a significant fundraiser for the Native
Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto. As a small organization we rely on this
event to ensure the Centre remains operational to provide emergency support to
over 800 Aboriginal women and youth who utilize our services each year.

What are the Minaake Awards?
Minaake in the Ojibwe language means
“People who are walking a good path.”
The Awards recognize Aboriginal women and youth in the Greater Toronto Area who are
meeting their life goals and helping others.
The Awards support the Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto (NWRCT), and
support women and youth in the Aboriginal community in the GTA. Now in its third year,
NWRCT is the only organization to recognize and celebrate the achievements of
Aboriginal women and girls in the following areas:
Leadership in the workplace and/or community that brings about positive changes for
others.
Advocacy and Human Rights work that makes positive changes to the rights,
freedoms and liberties of others.
Walking the Good Path by setting and achieving goals to foster positive change in
their own life and/or in the lives of others.
Making positive change in the LGBT2S and Two-Spirited community.
Challenger (Youth) for a young woman between the ages of 15-24 who is setting
goals and meeting them, overcoming hardships, demonstrating leadership, and
acting as a good role model for young people.
Culture Keeper who is keeping the culture, language and/or stories of Aboriginal
people alive.
The Awards bring the Toronto community together over traditional food and drinks to hear
from prominent speakers within the Aboriginal community and watch local and national
Aboriginal artists showcase their talents. Most importantly, the awards brings over 200
people together to hear the stories from awards winners, providing one clear message:

Where does the money go?
Funds raised through the Minaake Awards support core operations not covered through our
current funders. This is key to ensuring we can continue providing programs and services to
one of the most vulnerable groups in Toronto — urban Aboriginal women and their families.
The Seven Sacred teachings (Wisdom, Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Humility, and Truth)
guide all of the work at the Centre. This sets our work apart from any other women’s
community service provider, as we provide holistic support that accounts for all aspects of
being (mental, physical, emotional, spiritual). Programs and activities incorporate the
teachings, traditions, and cultures of all indigenous peoples.
The Centre offers life-enhancing resources, cultural ceremonies and teachings, skill
development, and programs to build capacity and celebrate Aboriginal cultures.
In the last year:

121 women built their resumes and conducted job searches
103 women attended Full Moon ceremonies
261 women participated in education programs
83 families accessed Family and Parenting programs
7800 nutritious lunches served through our community kitchen program
150 volunteers supported our programs, events and Board work
In addition to regular programming, the Centre also:

Hosted 450 supporters the annual city-wide Sisters in Spirit vigil
Provided professional development training to over 40 service providers in working
with Aboriginal women
Hosted 200 women and their children at the Winter Solstice celebration
Piloted a Speakers’ Bureau social enterprise

opportunities. We also welcome In-Kind and Custom Sponsorship. Purchasing a table or tickets
and donating them back to the Centre allows community members and family of the award
winners to attend the awards, who may not otherwise have the means to purchase a ticket.
