Delivering on the Promise of NFV/SDN
Network virtualisation brings huge opportunities for efficiency and agility
•
TEF aims to virtualise up to 30% of new deployments by 2016 over UNICA Infrastructure
Enrique Blanco MWC 2014
Some work needs to be done to meet those challenges

What we show?
We use UNICA architecture Execution Environment and we deploy all NFVs that we need for a Video call
Service and to download a Video Content. All elements are virtualized following NFV ETSI
recommendations.
Going forward to 5G we virtualize radio baseband using general purpose servers and we show the ability of
the vRAN to deliver a platform that enables new and better services to subscribers and a more flexible
approach to scaling capacity.

• Maps physical to virtual
• Responsible for high availability
• Resource Management & Orchestration
KEY BENEFITS:
• Multivendor
• Provisioning across SDN and legacy networking
• Resource allocation across applications
Moving one step forward in the drive to CLOUD

NFV appeals now because it allows to innovate more easily while providing the
best return on the investments in an all-IP network infrastructure. It enables
network automation and efficient use of resources optimizing delivery of
services such as video over LTE.
QUICKER TIME TO MARKET
A full Virtual network function portfolio including vEPC, vRAN , vIMS, vCDN ...
helps Mobile Network Operators become more agile, efficient, responsive and
innovative

Keep working on the cloud shift vision for building a better cloud with high
performance, reliability and greater scalability using open industrial and
carrier-grade virtualized networks that leverage cloud flexibility
Migrating network functions to the cloud will allow operators to speed up new
service offerings, speed deployments on a massive scale and expand into new
markets

Virtualization as one step more in our 5G vision
Cloud and virtualization are the most significant new trends in terms of future 5G
network architecture. SDN and NFV technologies are considered the main enablers
We also expect the boundary between Core and Access networks to blur in 5G systems
•
•
In some deployment scenarios, radio interface functionalities will be centralized in data centers
In others, local breakout will happen very close to the radio elements, so most of the core network functions
will be located close to the antenna
5G architectural framework should allow for the support of extreme cases, as well as
other intermediate alternatives:
•
•
Different levels of radio interface centralization (e.g., in aggregation point)
Moving network intelligence close to the edge (e.g., content caching)
BUT 5G IS OUR OTHER DEMO HISTORY…..
