Forming underneath the base of a cumulonimbus cloud, mammatus
are associated with strong thunderstorms. The globe-like clouds
clump together to form small patches that last only a few
minutes, but can cover the sky for hours. These clouds form in
sinking air instead of rising air. The name means mammary cloud.
