island with the purpose to pursue both pastoral and educational work
there. The last one as evidenced by the relatively strong SDV presence in the campus of Taipei’s Fu Jen Catholic University. According to Fr. Belamide, the first SVD parishes in Taiwan, all established
in the Chiayi area in the southern part of the island, did a laudable
work by opening kindergartens, running clinics for treatments of
minor illnesses as well as introduced the Church and its teachings to
people which led to the birth of new communities of Christians.
Mr. Peter Chiang, senior editor of Vatican Radio, presented a detailed account of the story of evangelization in Taiwan during a 350year period, from 1626 to 1975. The history is divided in two parts:
the first one covering the period from 1626 through 1642, which
ends with the Spanish missionaries expulsion by the Dutch who took control over the
island, and the second covering the period
from 1859 on, when three Spanish priests
from the Philippines and five Chinese lay
catechists landed at Kaohsiung.
Sr. Armida Veglio, General Secretary of
the Ursuline Sisters, recalled the extensive
“evangelization work through education in
all its forms” carried out by the Ursulines
during their fifty years of presence in Taiwan. After their expulsion from Mainland
China, the Ursuline Order established itself
in the east part of Taiwan. Currently, the
Ursuline Sisters evangelize in three cities
and run schools and educational institutes all
according to the principles of Ursuline pedagogy, which are inspired by the legacy received from St. Angela Merici. Sr. Veglio noted proudly that the
Ursulines is the only international order to have elected a Taiwanese
as Superior General: Sr. Cecilia Wang.
Fr. Hilario Q. Siňgian, Dominican Socius of the Asia-Pacific Provinces, concluded by recalling the other countless and unknown religious and lay people who have dedicated themselves to the service
of the Church and, nonetheless, equally deserving gratitude for their
work of evangelization to whom this conference wishes to pay tribute to.
Overall, each speaker gave a unique contribution to the thoroughness and success of the Conference as well as shared precious information and impressive personal experiences of their pastoral care
and evangelization activities in Taiwan.

paese. Attualmente le Orsoline effettuano opera di evangelizzazione in tre città e amministrano scuole e istituti secondo i principi
pedagogici che si ispirano al retaggio educativo di S. Angela Merici. Suor Veglio ha osservato con orgoglio che l’ordine delle Orsoline è l’unico ordine internazionale ad avere eletto una taiwanese,

The Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care and the
ROC Embassy to the Holy See offered medical kits to the
275 participants of the II Special Assembly for Africa of the Synod of
Bishops held in the Vatican from October 4-25, 2009. Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski, President of the said

20. According to Catholic News Service, during the presentation ceremony Archbishop Zimowski said that
the kits were a “small sign of solidarity and communion with the population of the African continent, even
the most remote areas” and asked

The kit contains, among other things, instruments to measure blood pressure, sugar levels and heart rates, as well as
the most commonly used items such as bandages, gauze and
disinfectants. As far as its size is concerned, the kit is small
and easy to carry; two important features in parts of the
world where health care workers travel great distances to
reach rural areas.

Legislative Assembly to declare three days of national
mourning. In a timely response to the above report, the ROC
Embassy to the Holy See provided humanitarian aids for the
victims of the natural disaster through the good offices of the
Pontifical Council “Cor Unum.”

President Ma received ROC delegation of pilgrims to
Makkah (Mecca) in Saudi Arabia on December 25, 2009.
The pilgrimage group consisted of 26 members representing
60,000 Muslims in Taiwan. One of a Muslim's duties, as
described in the Five Pillars of Islam, is to go on Hajj at
least once during his or her lifetime. Detailed information
