The Inauguration of The University of Manchester
At midnight on 30 September 2004, UMIST and the Victoria University of Manchester were dissolved
and the single institution of The University of Manchester came into existence.
The formal Inauguration of the University took place on Friday, 22 October 2004 when Her Majesty
The Queen visited the campus to personally present the University’s new Royal Charter to
Co-Chancellor Anna Ford at a special ceremony held in the Whitworth Hall.
The new institution has a distinguished heritage. It can trace its roots back to the formation of the
Manchester Mechanics Institute in 1824, which later became UMIST. The Victoria University of
Manchester was founded as Owens College in 1851 and became England’s first civic university in 1880.
The two universities first began working together almost 100 years ago. They were situated on
neighbouring campuses and this enabled them to develop a number of joint courses, departments
and services. They took the decision to merge in 2003.
The creation of The University of Manchester has been hailed as one of the boldest and most
ambitious initiatives in higher education. This pioneering spirit carries on today, with the aim
to become one of the world’s top 25 universities by 2015 backed by an ongoing £650 million
investment programme in staff and facilities – the largest such investment programme in
British higher education.

I welcome you all –graduands, family members and friends – to The University of Manchester
for this degree congregation.
This is a time of celebration for all of us and I very much hope that you find it an enjoyable
occasion. As each graduand is presented for conferment of their
degree, the University shares with you all a great sense of pride in the award they have
worked so hard to attain.
For those of you graduating today, these ceremonies mark not the end of your relationship
with the University but the start of a new stage. It is my hope that
the links between the University and you will grow ever stronger and I look forward to you
becoming an active member of the University’s alumni body.

The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences
The Faculty of Life Sciences
The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences is large and
comprehensive with nine component schools: Chemical Engineering and
Analytical Science; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth, Atmospheric and
Environmental Sciences; Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Materials;
Mathematics; Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering; and Physics
and Astronomy.
The Faculty of Life Sciences is one of the largest and most successful
unified research and teaching organisations of its kind in Europe.
With more than 1,000 people involved in research, 1,500 undergraduate
students and an annual budget in excess of £100 million, the Faculty
provides a highly interactive research and teaching environment where
all barriers to collaboration have been removed.
Many of the major advances of the 20th century began here, including
the work by Rutherford leading to the splitting of the atom and the
development of the world's first modern computer. Today, research
activities remain at the cutting-edge and the Faculty now generates
around £75 million in research funding a year.
As such, the Faculty is able to conduct the highest quality research while
maintaining an extensive range of undergraduate and graduate
programmes, as well as vocational training.
The Faculty was ranked third in the country by quality alone in the two
Units evaluated in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. When these
results were aggregated, it came second only to Cambridge – and
ahead of Oxford - in terms of research power (Grade Point Average x
number of staff).
The quality, breadth and volume of research activity at the Faculty of
Engineering and Physical Sciences is unrivalled. In 2010, two of our
scientists, Professor Andre Geim and Professor Konstantin Novoselov, won
the Nobel Prize for Physics for their pioneering work with graphene.
The Faculty's research encompasses the entire spread of life sciences from
the molecule to the cell to the organism, spanning all fields of biology from
environmental studies to cancer biology, from neuroscience to postgenomics, and from structural biology to organ transplantation.
Research is at the heart of The University of Manchester's Faculty of
Engineering and Physical Sciences. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise
revealed outstanding results, with all of our departments demonstrating
international or national excellence.
Rapid advances in molecular biology, structural biology, genomics and
bioinformatics, will ensure that the life sciences will continue to dominate
scientific discoveries in the 21st century.
The Faculty of Humanities
The Faculty of Humanities is the largest of the University’s four Faculties
and encompasses academic areas as diverse as Arts, Education, Social
Sciences, Business and Management, and Information Technology.
The Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences
The Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences has a long and proud history of
innovative teaching and groundbreaking research, and is one of the largest
faculties of clinical and health sciences in Europe.
With a total income of around £190 million per annum, more than 16,000
students and some 957 academic staff, it is equivalent to a medium-sized
university in the UK.
The Faculty has five Schools – Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and
Pharmaceutical Sciences, Psychological Sciences, and Nursing, Midwifery and
Social Work – with strong interdisciplinary links with other Schools and
Faculties across the University, including Life Sciences, Engineering and Physical
Sciences, Economic and Social Sciences, and Education.
The Faculty brings together seven schools: Manchester Business School;
Arts, Histories and Cultures; Law; Social Sciences; Environment and
Development; Languages, Linguistics and Cultures and Education, who all
have an excellent track record for research and teaching.
The School of Medicine traces its past to the first medical school established in
England outside London, while the School of Nursing was the first British
school to offer a degree in the subject; similarly, Manchester was the first
university to award degrees in Pharmacy.
Major activities include the Centre for New Writing, the Institute for Social
Change, the Brooks World Poverty Institute, the Institute for Science, Ethics
and Innovation, the Manchester Institute for Innovation Research, the
Research Institute for Cosmopolitan Cultures, the Centre for Chinese
Studies, the Institute for Development Policy and Management, the Centre
for Equity in Education and the Sustainable Consumption Institute.
The Faculty’s performance in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE)
reflects its strength across an entire range of biomedical and clinical research
areas from laboratory-based investigations through to studies of the impact of
discoveries on the health of the population.
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, Humanities was behind only
Oxford and Cambridge in the number of world-leading staff returned
(classified as 4*). 22% of its activity was classed as world leading and a
further 40% as internationally excellent.
There is a strong organisational capability for undertaking cross-faculty
teaching and research activity in partnership with the public sector and
industry. For example, in conjunction with four teaching hospitals, more than
300 GP practices and 25 district hospitals, the Faculty trains in excess of 350
doctors each year. Similarly, in partnership with the Department of Health, it
provides continuing professional development training for all 18,500
community pharmacists in England.
Furthermore, teaching and research is spread over a wide area with major
links to Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the
Christie NHS Foundation Trust, the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research,
Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospital of South Manchester
NHS Foundation Trust, and Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust.

Dr Ridge began his training at the University of London’s School of
Pharmacy, spending his early years as a registered pharmacist in clinical
practice and the pharmaceutical industry, before researching his PhD on the
automation of medicine supply and its use in hospitals at The University of
Manchester.
Since then, his career has seen him rise to the position of Chief
Pharmaceutical Officer for England with the Department of Health.

Along the way, he has helped establish the respected National Institute for
Health and Clinical Excellence. He also served as chief pharmacist for NHS
hospital services in North Glasgow, where he restructured the pharmacy
service across eleven hospitals in the area, and established and led the
cancer pharmacy group for the West of Scotland. He was also a founding
member of the Scottish Medicines Consortium.
Subsequently, he was recruited by University Hospitals Birmingham
Foundation Trust to design an automated system for controlling medicine
supply at a brand new hospital.
Later, once more working for the Department of Health, he led the
development of both a landmark White Paper for pharmacy across England,
and the establishment of a new professional regulator for pharmacy, the
General Pharmaceutical Council. He is currently leading a programme to
reform pharmacy education and careers. He has also been the driving force
behind the ‘healthy living’ pharmacy and public health concept now being
piloted across England, and has contributed at a senior level to UK planning
processes for pandemic and seasonal influenza.
In addition to raising a family, Dr Ridge became a Fellow of the Royal
Pharmaceutical Society in 2010, and has worked internationally with the
Council of Europe and the European Commission. His Alumni Association
Award is the latest highlight in a distinguished career.

Outstanding Alumnus
within the Faculty of
Engineering and Physical
Sciences
Professor Anthony Jones
Outstanding Alumni Awards are presented each year by The University of
Manchester Alumni Association to former students who have achieved
distinction in their field or have brought honour to the University through
their outstanding achievements.
A graduate and postgraduate in chemistry, Professor Jones is an expert in
the chemical technologies which lie behind the electronics and visual
display of many modern devices – from traffic lights to computers, and LEDs
to back-lit televisions.
Now a research professor with the University of Liverpool, where he has
helped to develop chemicals used worldwide in the microelectronics
industry, he is intent on inspiring the scientists of tomorrow with his
passion and commitment to science.
Throughout a career marked by vision and innovation, Professor Jones’
industry peers have lined up to recognise his achievements. Epichem, the
company he co-founded in 1983, received a prize in the British Technology
Group’s Academic Enterprise Competition in 1985 and was granted the
Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement in 1990. Professor Jones
himself was granted the Michael A Lunn Outstanding Contributor Award in
1996 for his research on precursors for indium phosphide and related
materials. More recently, his research group at the University of Liverpool
has been honoured with the Royal Society of Chemistry’s prestigious
Teamwork in Innovation Award in 2005.

Become an active member of The University of Manchester Alumni
Association – the organisation for all our former students by registering
with Your Manchester Online: www.manchester.ac.uk/yourmanchester the University’s interactive alumni community website and update your
contact details online. In order to register you will need your student
registration number (on your library card). This registration number is
unique to you and will soon become your alumni membership number.
Your alumni membership card will be on its way to you in September.
After you have registered you will join a network of nearly ¼ million
alumni which forms the core of the University’s global community and you
can enjoy the many alumni services the University is offering you, which

The Alumni Association membership card entitles you to more than forty
special discounts and offers. These include free use of the University library,

There are a variety of social nights, reunions, high profile lectures and

Alumni Networks
There is a number of special interest groups which offer excellent ways for
alumni with similar interests (either personal or professional) to get in
touch with one another. Groups can be established for professions, from
student clubs, for networking, for regional and overseas groups or for Halls
of Residence.
Manchester Business School Alumni Association (MBSAA)
There is also an independent Alumni Association for graduates from
Manchester Business School (MBSAA). MBS graduates are encouraged to

Emergency Evacuation procedure for Whitworth Hall
During the course of this event no alarm test or an
emergency evacuation practice has been planned.
Therefore, if the alarm, which sounds intermittently
is activated it should be treated as a potential
incident requiring evacuation.
Graduands and Guests are asked to remain calm and
seated and follow the instructions given by
stewarding staff.
The Assembly point is on the front quadrangle which
is adjacent to the Whitworth Hall in front of the
John Owens Building.
