To the Teacher
STAAR Math Standard by Standard Applying the Readiness and
Supporting TEKS for the STAAR prepares students for success in
mathematics. The program is organized into four books:
• Numerical Representations and Relationships
• Computations and Algebraic Relationships
• Geometry and Measurement
• Data Analysis and Personal Financial Literacy
The lessons, activities, and problems in the book address each TEKS
and have a corresponding set of related math problems that provide
Modeled Instruction, Guided Practice, and Independent Practice.
Modeled Instruction displays a specific example for students on how
to use the Five-Step Problem-Solving Plan.
Each step in the Five-Step Problem-Solving Plan provides students with
the tools they need to develop problem-solving strategies and
understand the principles taught in the TEKS.
The five steps include:
Identify: What are you being asked to find?
Find: What information are you given?
Choose: What strategy will you use to solve the problem?
Solve: Solve the problem.
Check and Justify: Check and justify your answer.
Guided Practice provides hints, which also offer strategies to help
students solve the problems. Throughout the text, students are
introduced to a variety of different problem-solving methods.

STAAR Math Standard by Standard • Level F
Independent Practice presents math problems for each TEKS for
students to solve on their own.
Following Independent Practice, students are provided with a twopage math journal where they can record and comment on what they
have learned.
Within the journal, students can be directed to write solutions for one
of the practice problems, determine what questions they would like to
ask the teacher to better understand what they have learned, write
math problems that are similar to the ones they just solved, or explain in
greater detail what they would like to do or learn about in math class.
