Data and Life Sciences: A Vital Learning Opportunity in Two Parts
IALS and the University of Massachusetts Boston are pleased to offer Part 2 in the new International
Life Sciences Workshop Series, “Biomarkers, Analysis, and Implementation.” This four-day
workshop continues the learning begun in “Introductions and Foundations,” held September 2014.
These two seminars – which are strongest taken as a series, but accessible also as individual
workshops – provide an opportunity for all participants and faculty to reach beyond their traditional
spheres of influence to engage in spirited and detailed dialogs with experts who cross industry,
academic, and geographic boundaries.
“Master Class” in Biomedical Science
Modeled after the Master Class in the Arts, we intend for this new “Master Class in Biomedical
Science – Meet the Experts” series to foster special relationships between participants and
lecturers, leading to knowledge sharing and the discussion of larger ethical issues among younger
and more experienced scholars and professionals. Our diverse and dynamic faculty brings vertical
expertise in specific areas of data mining / management; vertical expertise in evidence-based
medicine; and horizontal expertise to bridge and integrate the two areas for real-life applications.
Integrating these two particular vertical worlds for immediate applications is a new concept in
advanced medical learning.
Designed for Professionals
The unique workshop series has been designed for a very select group of professionals: Biomedical
post-graduates, researchers, faculty, group leaders, and clinical scientists. This ground-breaking
program links Big Data and Medicine, providing the basics of data management and data mining,
with practical applications for specific areas of evidence-based medicine, quality management, and
clinical research. This two-part program is a unique opportunity for professionals and faculty alike
to expand their knowledge of one of the most important tools in medicine today.

Connecting Informatics and Life Sciences
Life Science today is becoming increasingly complex, more global, and more data-based. The
importance of molecular biology and translational medicine to all aspects of Life Sciences is greater
than ever, and will continue to grow in the coming years. The sheer volume of data amassed on a
daily basis from the broad scope of research, medicine, and clinical practice can be a gold mine of
valuable information that can influence diagnoses, decision making, and quality management at all
levels of medicine. This Workshop series will provide the basis for mining, managing, analyzing, and
applying data to real-world challenges specifically faced by those in the Life Sciences community.

square, is an architectural jewel. Almost completely
spared from the destruction of war and lovingly
restored in the 1990s, it is Potsdam's only town square
which remains nearly the same as it was in the 18th
century. Under the direction of Frederick II,
townhouses were built on the square now known as
the Neuer Markt. The New Market Square, home to a
number of scientific institutions, is a center for the
humanities in Potsdam today. Our International

Dr. Barth is Chief Medical Officer B.Braun Avitum AG. B. Braun provides renal care to
>22.000 patient in > 25 countries and is a leading medical device company for renal
replacement therapy producing machines, filters and disposables. Claudia Barth is in
charge of all quality assurance aspects in medicine and nursing, implementation of new
concepts and structure of medical care, support of reimbursement in providing care for
dialysis and kidney patients, clinical studies, continuous scouting for innovation in
treatment modalities. 2003-2013: Chief Medical Officer and Member of the
Management Board of the KfH Kuratorium für Dialyse und ierentransplantation
(Curatorium for Dialysis and Renal Transplantation) serving 1/3 of the German dialysis
population, covering 200 kidney centers for adults and 15 kidney centers for children

York City, USA. Research expertise in basic science is in transplantation immunology,
epidemiological data analysis from dialysis patient treatment data bases
Dr. Binder is a Biophysicist by training and worked for many years on biomembranes
using computer simulations and optical spectroscopy. Later, his interests changed to
bioinformatics where he developed sophisticated calibration methods for microarray
expression data using physico-chemical models. Since more than ten years he is
managing director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Bioinformatics of the University of
Leipzig. His group is involved in numerous studies discovering the molecular background
of complex diseases such as cancer using data-driven mining and hypothesis-driven
modeling approaches with the special focus on gene-regulatory mechanisms caused by
genetic and epigenetic dysfunctions. For these applications, he, together with his
coworkers, develops methods of class discovery, feature selection, and function mining
for high-dimensional omics data using machine learning and particularly self-organizing
maps. These methods are applied to different cancer entities such as glioma, lymphoma,
colon cancer, and melanoma, and also to different kinds of civilization diseases studied
in the frame of the LIFE center for civilization diseases.

Immediately prior to joining Hemostemix as CEO, Dr. Burchardt was vice president of
regenerative medicine at Pfizer, Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Pfizer was the
first large pharmaceutical company to develop clinical cell therapies in international
multicenter trials. Before his appointment at Pfizer, he worked as vice president of
medical affairs for Aastrom Biosciences in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. He initiated and
led Aastrom’s US-based clinical cell-therapy programs in cardiovascular diseases such as
critical limb ischemia (CLI) and dilative cardiomyopathy (DCM). Previously, he worked
for Miltenyi Biotec GmbH in Germany as medical director, with global responsibilities
including the development and market introduction strategy of 10 new clinical cell
therapy products. Before that, Elmar worked for Bayer AG in Germany. He studied
medicine and biochemistry in Hannover, at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut,
USA, and at the Max Delbruck Center of Molecular Medicine in Berlin, Germany. He
holds MSc and PhD degrees in biochemistry and an MD degree from Hannover Medical
School in Hannover, Germany, and is an adjunct professor at the University of Witten
Herdecke in Witten, Germany. Elmar has more than 20 years of experience with the
development of innovative therapies.

Dr. Dreinhöfer is a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery, social medicine,
physical therapy, emergency medicine, osteology (DVO), chiropractic therapy and health
economy (ebs). One of his main scientific interests is Health Service Research. In 2009,
he was appointed Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at Medical
Park in Humboldtmühle, Berlin, as well as Chair of the Department of Musculoskeletal
Prevention, Rehabilitation and Health Services Research at the Center for
Musculoskeletal Surgery at Charité Universitätsmedizin and Humboldt University. Other
appointments include the European Board of Johnson & Johnson Orthopedics in 1997
and Deputy Head of the Department of Orthopedics, University of Ulm, in 2001. Prof.
Dreinhöfer is a member of the Executive Board of the Professional Association of
Specialists in Orthopedic and Traumatology (BVOU) and of the Board of the European
Federation of National Associations of Orthopedics and Traumatology (EFORT). He is
editor of the German Orthopaedic Societies journal and is also Director of Development
for the International Bone and Joint Decade. Prof. Dreinhöfer holds degrees in Medicine
and Health Economy (ebs) from Hannover Medical School and the European Business
School in Oestrich-Winkel, respectively.

Professor Geyer is directing the Medical Sociology Unit at Hannover Medical School. His
research interests are on the role of social/ psychological factors in the course of
disease, and morbidity compression as the present main project. The first line of
research includes epidemiological studies with large registry-based datasets from
statutory health insurances. These are being used for health care research, in particular
for examining morbidity compression, for evaluating inpatient rehabilitation, and for
studies on the utilization of screening programmes. Another current project deals with
selectivities in the transplantation of kidneys and with the length of survival after
transplantation. In this project epidemiological and clinical data are combined.
A
second line of work refers to the role of social factors in the onset and course of breast
cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The respective studies are being conducted with
clinical populations. A long term-study on breast cancer started in 2002, and the
preparations for a 10-year follow-up of patients with congenital heart disease have
recently begun. In all these studies clinical and social/ psychological measures were
integrated and analyzed within the context of interdisciplinary research groups.
Siegfried Geyer is past president of the European Society of Health and Medical
Sociology and currently chairman of the German Society of Medical Sociology.

Dr. Gummert has been Director of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Heart and
Diabetes Center NRW, Ruhr University of Bochum, Bad Oeynhausen, Germany, since
2009. After studying Medicine and gaining his M.D. at the University of Bonn, where he
also completed a General Surgery Internship, Gummert specialized in the field of cardiac
surgery at the Universities of Goettingen and Leipzig. After gaining a Ph.D. in 2000, he
became Co-Director of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Heart Center Leipzig, where
he remained until 2006. He then moved to Jena to become Director of the Department
of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University Hospital Jena. Prof. Gummert is a member of
various eminent societies in his field, including the German Transplantation Society, the
International Society of Minimal Invasive Cardiac Surgery and the German Society for
Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery.

Dr. Gwinner studied Human Medicine at Hannover Medical School (MHH) until 1987,
and was a research fellow in Nephrology until 1990 at MHH, followed by a postgraduate
research fellowship at the Departments of Nephrology and Biochemistry/Molecular
Biology, University of Florida until 1992. Clinical specialization in Internal
Medicine/Nephrology at MHH until 2000, with subsequent positions as Consultant of
Internal Medicine and Nephrology and Head of the Emergency Room/Wards.
Experimental studies in oxidative stress mechanisms, venia legendi in 2001 and
Professorship for Internal Medicine in 2006. Clinical interests focus on Transplantation.
Current research interests include biomarker studies and registry analyses on various
relevant topics in transplant medicine (graft rejection, bone & mineral disease, graft and
patient outcomes), partly in collaboration with German transplant centers (Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft) and European Partners (EU Research Programme).

Dr. Kassirer is Distinguished Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine and Visiting
Professor at Stanford University. He has been at Tufts for 50 years, and served as Vice
Chairman of the Department of Medicine for two decades. His research encompassed
acid-base balance, medical decision-making, and cognitive science. He has been a
Governor and Regent of the American College of Physicians, chair of the American Board
of Internal Medicine, and from 1991 to 1999, as Editor-in-Chief of the New England
Journal of Medicine. He has received numerous awards and several honorary degrees,
and was elected to the Institute of Medicine, the Association of American Physicians,
and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has written extensively about
clinical cognition, health care, and financial conflict of interest. He is the author of “On
The Take: How Medicine’s Complicity with Big Business Can Endanger Your Health” and
co-author of “Learning Clinical Reasoning.”

Dr. Macoska is currently the Alton J. Brann Distinguished Professor in Science and
Mathematics, Director of the Center for Personalized Cancer Therapy, and Professor of
Biological Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The Center for
Personalized Cancer Therapy is a joint program of the University of Massachusetts
Boston and the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC) to enable the next
generation of well-trained biomedical workforce talent and the future leaders of life
sciences research in academia and industry. Prior to the University of Massachusetts,
Dr. Macoska was Full Professor in the Department of Urology and Programs in Cellular
and Molecular Biology, Cancer Biology, and Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics
in the University of Michigan School of Medicine. At Michigan she was also Associate
Director for the Genitourinary Program in the Comprehensive Cancer Center (20022006), Associate Chair for Research (2003-2008) and Chief of the Laboratory Division

Training Program (2007-2010). At the National level, Dr. Macoska has served on peer
review for several journals and funding agencies and as a strategic participant in several
advisory councils and workshops. She is the current President of the Society for Basic
Urologic Research (SBUR) and previously served as Co-Chair and Member of the
Organizing Committees for the 2010 and 2011 Annual Fall SBUR Symposia, and Chair of
the Organizing Committee for the 2012 Annual Symposium. In 2012 she received the
Society of Women in Urology/Society for Basic Urologic Research Award for Excellence
in Urologic Research. Dr. Macoska has led peer-reviewed and funded research for the
past 20 years focused on elucidating the molecular genetic alterations and dysfunctional
inter- and intra-cellular signaling mechanisms that promote lower urinary tract
pathobiologies. Her current research interests include mesenchymal cell biology, tumor
microenvironment, and epithelial mesenchymal transition.

Dr. Marschollek has received his M.D. (Dr. med.) degree from Hannover Medical School
in 1999 and has worked as a surgeon and specialist in sports medicine. He received his
M.Sc. degree in informatics in 2004 and the doctoral degree in engineering (Dr.-Ing.)
from the University of Braunschweig – Institute of Technology in 2009. He is director of
the Peter L. Reichertz Institute for Medical Informatics of the University of Braunschweig
– Institute of Technology and Hannover Medical School at Hannover Medical School. His
recent research interests include: clinical applications of health-enabling technologies,
medical data mining and pattern recognition, sensor-based activity analysis/
accelerometry, sensor-enhanced health information systems and decision support
systems for exercise rehabilitation. He is founder and head of the International Medical
Information Association’s (IMIA) working group ‘Wearable Sensors in Healthcare’. He is
executive editor of the ‘Gerontechology’ section of Zeitschrift für Geriatrie und
Gerontologie – European Journal of Geriatrics, and on the editorial boards of ‘Methods
of Information in Medicine’ and ‘Journal of Medical Systems’.

Dr. Mühlbacher is professor of health economics and health care management at the
Hochschule Neubrandenburg. CHPR Senior Research Fellow, Duke Global Health
Institute, Duke University. He is director of Gesellschaft für empirische Beratung mbH,
Freiburg. Axel Mühlbacher was a 2010-11 Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and
Practice placed at Duke Clinical Research Institute and Fuqua School of Business, Duke
University. In 1996 he graduated from the Eberhard-Karls University, Tübingen, where
he studied business administration and economics. In 1996 he was appointed as
research fellow at the German Coordinating Agency of Public Health (GCAPH) at AlbertLudwig University, Freiburg. In 1999 he joined the research training group "Demandoriented and cost-effective Health Care - Fundamentals of optimal Allocation"
(Graduiertenkolleg) at TU Berlin, HU, FU Berlin with a Scholarship from the German
Research Foundation (DFG). In 2001 he graduated with a doctorate in economics and
business administration (Dr. rer. oec.) with a thesis on Management and organization of
integrated care - an economic analysis of health care delivery networks. Prior to
founding the Institute of Health Economics and Health Care Management in 2006, Dr.
Mühlbacher was assistant professor at the department of economics and management
at Technical University Berlin (2001-2004) and associate professor of economics, health
economics and econometrics (C2) at Hochschule Neubrandenburg (2004-2006). His
primary area of specialization is on the application of decision analysis and stated
preference research in health care management, utility assessment, health technology
assessment and outcomes research.

Professor Price is currently Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry in the Diabetes and
Nutritional Sciences Division, Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine, King’s College London
and a Director of PPR diagnostics Ltd. He was previously Head of Research and Head of
Molecular Life Sciences, Division of Life Sciences. He obtained a PhD and a DSc from the
University of Wales and was a Fulbright Fellow at Harvard Medical School. He has
published over 250 peer-reviewed papers, books and articles. His principal research
interest is the investigation of the underlying mechanisms involved in renal disease. An
interest in biomarkers and nephrotoxicity arose from these studies and was central to
long term collaboration with five European Laboratories. Current interests include the
development of rapid point of care diagnostic tests for disease and infection.

Dr. Dan Simovici is a professor of Computer Science at University of
Massachusetts Boston and an associate member of Dana-Farber Cancer
Institute. His main research interests are in Data Mining and in the
algebraic aspects of multiple-valued logic. Dr. Simovici is the
author or coauthor of more than 160 research papers and he co-authored several
books. His latest book "Mathematical Tools for Data Mining" appeared this year in its
second edition at Springer. He is the
managing editor of the International Journal for Multiple-Valued Logic
and Soft Computing.
Dr. Stolte’s medical education was at the Medical Schools of the Universities of Kiel,
Goettingen and Cologne, receiving his Doctor’s Degree in Medicine from the University
of Goettingen in 1964. From 1974 to 2000 he was University Professor for Internal
Medicine and Special Nephrology and Chief of Experimental Nephrology at Hannover
Medical School. As author of more than 220 scientific publications, chiefly in the fields
of clinical and applied renal physiology, he is currently both University Professor em. at
Hannover Medical School and Distinguished Professor of Charité University Medicine at
the Humboldt University & Free University of Berlin. His various awards include the
Schoeller-Junkmann Award for Research conducted in the area of Endocrinology, and
the “Verdienstkreuz am Bande” (Cross of Merit on Ribbon), awarded by the Federal
Republic of Germany in 2000. Throughout his working life, from 1968 to 2000,
Professor Stolte has managed to acquire research support in Germany (DFG German
Research Foundation). He also managed to secure funding from both Europe (CEC/EU,
Brussels) and the USA (Buswell Foundation, Buffalo & NIEHS, Raleigh). Professor Stolte
has worked in the USA as a Research Associate at the National Institutes of Health,
Bethesda, Maryland, as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the State University of New York
at Buffalo, N.Y., Departments of Medicine and Physiology, as a Research Associate at the
Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, Department of Biology, and – over a
period of 30 years – as a Research Associate and Principal Investigator at the M.D.I.
Biological Laboratory, Salsbury Cove, Maine. He initiated the non-profit membership
organization IALS – International Academy of Life Sciences – whose mission is to
promote cutting-edge issues in the Life Sciences through graduate and postgraduate
training, as well as feasibility studies and white papers, and has been its President
throughout.

 Established post-graduates, fellows and clinical scientists who want an overview of data management;
 Young professors / faculty members from across informatics, with a basic science background and/or
field study experience;
 Young research group leaders in university institutions, industry research laboratories, and extramural
scientific government and non-governmental organizations.

This workshop is designed for participants to attend both workshops. Part 1 provided a key knowledge
foundation, while Part 2 provides applications experience and training. However, participants may
