READING LEVEL 3–4 | SCIENCE | PG. 1 Content Learning Objective Learners will debate making a one-way trip to Mars. Before Reading Ask learners if they ever had an interest in traveling in space. Check Comprehension Encourage learners to answer in complete sentences. 1. How many people will MarsOne train to live on Mars? When will they leave? (MarsOne will train 24 people. They will leave in 2024.) 2. How many people did MarsOne recently name to be considered for the trip to Mars? (It named 100 people.) 3. Why does Dan Carey want to make the trip? (He wants his name in the history books.) 4. What will the astronauts on the MarsOne trip do on Mars? (They will live there together for the rest of their lives.) 5. Leila Zucker says she is willing to “die trying” something. What is it? (She is willing to die trying to be the first human to set foot on Mars.) Discussion Questions 1. Do you like learning about space? 2. What do you think would be hard about living on Mars? 3. Would you want to travel with the MarsOne mission? Debate: A One-Way Trip to Mars? Ask learners to think about the last discussion question above, “Would you want to travel with the MarsOne mission?” Encourage learners to say why they would or would not want to be part of the mission. Tell them they will have a debate between those who would like to go and those who would not. Designate one part of the class for those who would like to travel with the MarsOne mission. Designate a separate space in the class for those who do not want to travel with the mission. Ask learners to stand on the side of the room that represents their opinion. If learners are about evenly divided, you can use those groups for the debate. If there’s one side of the room with many more people, ask for some volunteers who are willing to argue for the other side. Next, have learners work with others on their team to state four reasons to support their opinion. Each team should choose four people to present one reason each. Give learners time to organize their ideas. When ready, ask each team to share their reasons. Remind other learners in the class to listen carefully to the ideas. Once both teams have stated their reasons, ask if anyone has changed their opinion. Give teams feedback on their reasons (for example, which reasons were well supported and had clear ideas). If you like, you can list the reasons on the board under “Pros” and “Cons.” Learners can discuss which side has the best support. ANSWER KEY Judge Puts New Immigration Actions on Hold (4–6) 1.
