Dear Villagers,
Village organizations are gearing up, planning all manner of activities and tasks for 2015, as you
will learn over the coming months from the pages of The Pink Sheet. We are fortunate to have
such a handy newsletter to let one another know what events and activities are in the works and
to encourage everyone’s participation. Many new residents may wonder about this newsy thing
called The Pink Sheet. Where did it come from? How does it all work?
The Pink Sheet began in 1947 as an outgrowth of the elementary school’s Mothers Club, the
forerunner of The Community Club. The earliest issues were brief and printed on white paper,
but members felt that a more eye-catching color was needed since the slim newsletter often was
thrown out with junk mail. Pink was chosen simply because it was the least expensive color.
In the early days, Village organizations would place notices for the newsletter in THE PINK
SHEET DRAWER, the rightmost drawer in the credenza at Town Hall. The editors would
organize items, compose the pages and run off copies of each page on a duplicating machine, a
mimeograph machine, and lastly a modern copier. Club members would gather at The
Community House to walk around tables collating the stacks of pages and stapling the
newsletter by hand. This fondly remembered social activity was called “pulling The Pink Sheet.”
Today, the pages are computer generated in Word or Publisher. Notices submitted as emails or
full pages are emailed to the editor who organizes the Village news, while Advertising Editor
Becky Burrington makes up the advertising section. All content is emailed to the printer who
delivers the traditional hard copy to the Gates Mills post office to be sent to all residents free of
charge as bulk mail. Villagers who have moved away keep up with local news by reading an online color version of the newsletter (found at www.gatesmillspinksheet.com) or by ordering
a subscription for $28.00 annually (Ordering information always is on the last page.).
The Pink Sheet enjoys a body of loyal advertisers. All commercial ads require two references
from Gates Mills residents before they are included. The ads are a great way to find a service
provider. If you are pleased with someone’s work or service, recommend advertising with The
Pink Sheet. Advertising information is found on The Pink Sheet’s website, on the back cover of
this newsletter, and in THE PINK SHEET DRAWER at Town Hall. Years ago, The Pink Sheet had
many more pages of ads that generated funds for Community Club projects for the Village. The
Community Club hopes residents can promote advertising to generate more revenue.
To place an ad, advertisers need to submit 3 items by the deadline of the 20th of the month:
1. the ad: snail mailed or emailed ([email protected]),
2. payment: cash, check, or PayPal (our PayPal account: [email protected]),
3. a contract listing 2 village references which can be downloaded from the website
and is available in THE PINK SHEET DRAWER.
The sizes of the ads are described on the back page of every issue. Personal ads on the inside
back cover do not require references. All ads must be prepaid as there is no billing.
Not only is The Pink Sheet our Village newsletter, it chronicles Village activities and narrates our
story. The archived copies of The Pink Sheet stored in The Community Club room at The
Community House and at our branch library offer a heartwarming glimpse of Gates Mills
through the years. Thank you to everyone who, over the years, has helped produce our
newsletter—especially all the former editors who were key in preserving our collective history.

As I write this month’s article, it’s minus 10 degrees outside. But as we all know, spring is coming!
March and springtime in general is a busy time when it comes to Emergency Preparedness.
March 1st through the 7th is National Severe Weather Week. On March 4, 2015 at 9:50 am there will be
a Statewide Tornado Drill. This drill will include the use of warning sirens, the Emergency Alert System
(EAS), and our local CODE RED notification system. To enroll, go to the village website at
www.gatesmillsvillage.com and click on the CODE RED link. If you have questions or need assistance
signing up please call the Town Hall at 440-423-4405 and speak to our Police and Town Hall
Coordinators, Charlene or Dorothy.
Don’t forget to change your clocks, Smoke alarm, and Carbon Monoxide alarm batteries on Sunday
March 8, 2015. According to the National Fire Protection Association, having a working smoke alarm
cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted
from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. If you don’t have working
smoke alarms please contact me by phone or email. The fire department has a smoke alarm program
available to all Gates Mills residents.
March 16th through 20th is Flood Safety Awareness Week. Remember, “Turn Around – Don’t Drown”.
Do not walk or drive through a flooded area. Six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet
and two feet of moving water can move a car!

With the tax season upon us, please be conscious of Tax identity theft during this time and do not
become a victim.
Tax identity theft is one of the fastest growing forms of identity theft in the U.S. Tax identity theft occurs
when someone uses your Social Security Number (SSN) to file a tax return claiming a fraudulent refund.
Below are some helpful tips for avoiding tax identity theft:
 File your tax return early in the season.
 Use a secure internet connection if you file electronically, or mail your tax return directly from
the post office.
 Protect your personal financial information at home and on your computer.
 Shred copies of your tax return, drafts, or calculation sheets you no longer need.
 Know the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) won’t contact you by email, text or social media. If the
IRS needs information, it will contact you by mail.
 Check your Social Security Administration earnings statements annually.
 Only provide your SSN when YOU initiate the contact or you are sure who you know is asking.
 Research a tax preparer thoroughly before you hand over personal information.
 If your SSN has been compromised, contact the IRS Identity Theft Protection Specialized Unit at
800-908-4490.
 Check your credit report annually.
A reminder, please lock all doors as we have had several reports of suspicious footprints around
residences. Please report any suspicious activity to the police department.

with guest speaker architect, David Ellison, and a garden party on the terrace for members
(photos below from left to right). Our winter exhibit at the Gates Mills Library featured Don
Steinbrink’s 1954 photographs of the village (one is above right). The Society currently is
expanding its displays on 20th century village traditions and personalities at the Museum.

It Makes SENSE (and CENTS!) to Recycle
Villagers have been recycling for quite a few years, using the bins behind the
Community House. Although the Village manages these bins, proceeds have
graciously been donated to Gates Mills Land Conservancy’s operating fund.
Now, thanks to the efforts of Dave Biggert, our Service Director, and River
Valley Paper Company, recycling in Gates Mills makes more SENSE…and
CENTS. In addition to accepting newspaper, computer paper and such, River
Valley Paper Company takes phone books, brown paper bags, both hard and
soft bound books, magazines and catalogs. And something totally new to
Gates Mills, there will now be a separate bin for you to recycle your
CARDBOARD! (Please, no plastic, Styrofoam, glass, metal, trash or aluminum.)
How does this make more CENTS? The more we recycle, the more money we
earn. For example, in January, we earned $15/ton for up to 2500 pounds of
recyclables. And the amount goes up, as high as $30/pound for over 7500
pounds if we recycle more. So, please use these bins, you will support your
community and the money earned stays entirely in our community.

GATES MILLS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Gates Mills School celebrated Valentine’s Day with a
delicious pancake breakfast for our entire school
family. Gates Mills’ very own Officer Hanish helped
flip up warm pancakes on that cold February
morning! We also celebrated our Head Custodian’s
final pancake breakfast, after 37 years, by presenting
him with an official “Pancake Flipper” apron signed by
every student. It was a fun morning to share
memories and make new ones.

Gratitude Journaling Class:
Keeping a daily journal of things that you are thankful for is a lifechanging experience. By noticing and focusing on the good things in
your life, bad things lose their effect, and you end up with a much
happier outlook on life. Judith Eugene of The Loving Hands Group will
be our teacher.
Gratitude journaling can help to elevate mood, increase optimism, alleviate depression, and
cope with sadness. Your group will learn how to start a journal, what to include, and all of the
ways that gratitude journaling can benefit them. We will also have a short discussion about
Mindfulness Meditation, as it ties into observing and finding things to be grateful for in the
world around us.
A little bit about Judith Eugene….
Judith is a licensed Architect and an Interior Decorator with 25 years of experience, graduating with
honors from Kent State University. She is a certified yoga instructor with specialized senior adult
training through the Yoga Fit training program, and she is also a Reiki Master Teacher, trained in the
Usui Reiki system. Judith is an accomplished writer, and her work has been featured in several
Cleveland publications. Judith is the Founder of The Loving Hands Group.

Attention Graduating High School Seniors!
The Community Club is proud to sponsor a yearly scholarship competition open to
college bound high school seniors who are current residents of Gates Mills. These
scholarship awards are based on scholastic achievement and demonstrated community
service. To be eligible for a scholarship, students must submit evidence of the following
qualifications:
Be a current Gates Mills resident for at least two years.
Have a 2.5 GPA or higher.
Must volunteer for service within Gates Mills
(15 hour minimum for students graduating in 2015).
Provide two letters of recommendation from individuals for whom community
service has been performed.
Write an essay detailing:
1. the amount of your community service by organization
2. a description of volunteering activities outside of Gates Mills
3. an explanation of what influence the service has had or will have on your
future plans
IMPORTANT: Allow enough advance time for individuals to write the
letters of recommendation.

Ann was born on December 10, 1913, in Fairport Harbor, Ohio.
She had brothers who served in the Army and were always silent
about their service to their little sister. Ann grew up near the
lighthouse, and in those days, she would hop from large wet rock
to rock to get out to the lighthouse and back with no adults.
Ann graduated from St. Vincent's Charity Hospital and was a nurse
in Chicago while her husband was finishing his medical residency
in Cleveland. Ann had two children, a deceased daughter, Ann
Margaret, and a son, Paul John. Paul graduated from the Institute
of Art in Cleveland and received his Master's from Yale. He painted
the picture of God for his mother that hangs in her home. Ann
wants everyone to see it. Ann does many such good works
including giving ten thousand dollars to the village of Gates Mills. Ann still drives and lives in
her own home. She believes in doing as many good and peaceful things as she can while she
can. She is God's vision of goodness on earth. Gates Mills has been blessed to have her.

The perfect antidote for cabin fever is a visual trip to the European countryside.
A fascinating program is planned for our first meeting of 2015. ‘Through the
Eyes of the Artist”, presented by Felicia Zavarella Stadleman, will explore the
life and paintings of Dutch artist Vincent Willem van Gogh
who was a major Post-Impressionist painter. Van Gogh’s
work was notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty,
and bold color. He had a far-reaching influence on
20th-century art. Felicia is an exciting speaker who will bring
this artist and his works to life.

T HESE 7 F OODS H IDE MASSIVE S UGAR
It’s hard to avoid sugar when many common
foods secretly contain loads of it.
You know that eating an excess of sugar will
derail your fitness progress and quickly lead to
an increase in body fat, but recent studies are
proving that sugar is much more dangerous
than we once thought.

health food, but sadly this sweetener is just as
dangerous as white sugar. Agave nectar is
85% fructose.
4. Dried Fruit
Yes, even our fruit isn’t safe anymore. Most
companies are adding extra sugar in with their
dried fruit, making it as sweet as candy. Just
1/3 of a cup contains 24 grams of sugar.
5. Granola Bars
It may boast wholesome, whole grains on the
package, but your favorite granola bar is hiding
a sickly sweet secret. The average packaged
granola bar contains 12 grams of sugar.
6. Energy Drinks
When you need an afternoon pick-me-up, think
twice before reaching for that energy drink.
Mega energy drinks contain up to 83 grams of
sugar.
7. BBQ Sauce
There’s a reason that those BBQ chicken
wings are finger licking goodall that sugar it’s
hiding. A 2 Tablespoon serving will set you
back 13 grams of sugar. Start eliminating the

WHEN TAKING IN ANIMALS BECOMES HOARDING
Everyone knows an animal lover. About 60% of all households have at
least one pet--usually no more than a couple of dogs or cats. But
sometimes people take in more animals than this.
How many animals are too many to have? From a non-legal standpoint,
it’s when the people in the home cannot adequately manage the health
and welfare of each animal in their care. For some this is as few as one,
and for others this is many more.
There are different types of animal hoarders. These include the overwhelmed caregiver, the
rescuer hoarder, and the exploiter hoarder. Often, hoarders do not believe that they are
hoarding; they do not recognize that they are harming their animals. Some even incorporate as
a nonprofit to help them raise money to support the animals in their care, yet they still are
unable to maintain the standards of care required for the animals to live well in their
environment. Hoarders do not adopt out many of their animals and “collect” even more animals.
Stranger still are those people who defend animal hoarders as saviors, despite overwhelming
evidence that the animals in their care are suffering.
If you suspect that you or someone you know is hoarding, this will likely be a bigger problem
than you can manage on your own. You initially may ask an animal care professional, such as a
veterinary technician or veterinarian, whether the suspected hoarder has too many animals and
whether the animals are suffering. If the answer is yes, you likely will need to involve many
different professionals such as law enforcement, animal wardens, animal shelter(s),
veterinarians, lawyers, photographers, first responders (i.e. fire and ambulance), and mental
health professionals.
For some communities, laws are in place regarding how many kinds of pets each homeowner
may have. The Cuyahoga County Board of Health and the Gates Mills websites have no
information about the maximum numbers of animals we may have, but they do cite laws about
rabies vaccination and laws specific to dogs (e.g. leash laws). In Mayfield Heights, there may
not be more than two of any one species in their household.
In my household, we know we have reached our limit and are not planning on taking in any
more animals. It is unlikely that we will ever become hoarders.

ADVERTISERS: Display ads require 3 things: the ad, payment, and a contract with 2 references.
All display ads, personal ads, and notices must be: clean, typed and either camera-ready/scan-ready/e-file.
Display ads require two Gates Mills references, submitted in writing with addresses and phone numbers.
