Chief Health Officer Advisory – Frozen Berries
Associated with Hepatitis A – Update
Issued to: Health professionals
Key Messages:
 Update: This alert has been updated to reflect
increased case numbers, and to include further
guidance on laboratory testing for hepatitis A virus
infection. Note: This alert is for health professionals.
Consumers should be directed to Berries products
recall and Hepatitis A – Information for Consumers.
 The consumption of Nanna’s Fresh Frozen Mixed
Berry 1kg packet has been linked with hepatitis A
infection in 18 cases Australia wide with three
confirmed in Victoria. This product has been
recalled. As a precaution, three further products
have also been recalled – Nanna’s Fresh Frozen
Raspberries 1kg, Creative Gourmet Frozen
Mixed Berries 300 gram and 500 gram packets.
 Advise your patients not to consume any
recalled product, and to discard or return the
product to the point of sale for a refund.
 Do not test well patients for hepatitis A virus
infection, as tests are not useful until symptoms have
developed.
 Do not vaccinate for hepatitis A because of berry
exposure, as the absolute risk from this exposure is
extremely low, and vaccine must be given within 14
days of an exposure to have any protective effect.
 Check if your patient has a routine indication for
hepatitis A vaccine, such as chronic liver disease,
chronic hepatitis C infection, or planned travel to a
country with endemic hepatitis A transmission. See
the Australian Immunisation Handbook for details.
 Take blood for hepatitis A total antibody and
hepatitis A IgM antibody in patients who have
symptoms compatible with hepatitis A virus infection
in the 15-50 days after consumption of berries from
a recalled product line. Compatible symptoms are
two or more fevers, malaise, abdominal discomfort,
loss of appetite, and nausea.
 Only take blood for liver function tests and
hepatitis A virus PCR testing if there is hepatitis
serology consistent with acute infection OR
clinical evidence of hepatitis, such as jaundice.
The cost of PCR will be borne by the patient unless
these criteria are met.
 Notify any suspected case of hepatitis A
infection to the Department of Health immediately
by calling 1300 651 160 so that timely prophylaxis of
contact can be provided.

Child Immunisation Rates at Risky Levels
Ice Training for GPs
ACIR data just received by GVML indicates that
immunisation rates for children aged 12 to 15 months is
below that required for community protection.
Immunisation rates for DTP, HIB, polio, Hep B and
pneumococcal are all below 90% in the 12 to 15 month
age group. The MMR rate across the GVML catchment
for children aged 24 to 27 months is also below 90%.
It is essential that practices take a proactive approach
regarding
immunisation.

establish if a child is up to date with immunisations is
available on the GVML website.
In light of the recent measles outbreak, The Conversation
recently published an article that discusses herd immunity
and measles. An interesting read!
ICE or Methamphetamine use is a growing concern for GPs
in the Goulburn Valley area. This evening aims to provide
GPs with the confidence and knowledge to recognise signs
of amphetamine use, look at harm minimisation, recognise
amphetamine induced psychosis and practical support and
treatment options.

STUDIES AND QUESTIONNAIRES
Enrolment Open for New Prostrate Cancer Study at
GV Health
GV Health oncology unit is participating in an
international multicentre prostate cancer study which
aims to determine the effectiveness of the study drug
Enzalutamide versus current standard treatment when
combined with a Luteinizing Hormone Releasing
Hormone Analogue (LHRHa) or surgical castration, as
first line androgen deprivation therapy.
GV Health is one of 24 sites in Australian participating
in this clinical trial. Globally there are more than 200
centres participating in the United States, Canada,
Europe, New Zealand, and the UK regions.
The trial is now open for enrolment with a total of 400
patients from Australian & New Zealand needed for the
trial.
To take part in this study, men must not have received
any other anti-cancer treatment for advanced disease.

State Health Emergency Response – A Call to GPs
and Practices to Assist
GVML would like to identify GPs and practices who may be
willing to provide assistance during emergency events in
their area. This may involve being contacted to provide care
where local services are unable to meet demand, accepting
additional patients for a short period of time, or staffing a
field clinic where local infrastructure is not available. Typical
emergency events in our region are fire and flood. To

Limited Free Registration Available
The Emergency Response Planning Tool (ERPT) has
been developed to assist general practices to better
prepare for, respond to, and recover from the impacts of
emergences and pandemics.
The ERPT is a practical tool that guides you through a
series of planning templates, where critical information
about your practice can be entered and saved. This
information will be used to create an emergency
response plan which is individually tailored to your
general practice.

Choosing Wisely About to Hit Australian Shores
The NPS MedicineWise Choosing Wisely Australia
initiative is set to commence in April.
The Choosing Wisely Australia initiative imports the
2012 US Choosing Wisely concept, where medical
colleges are invited to highlight tests and treatments that
are used widely despite evidence to the contrary.
The primary concern of the initiative is patient safety with
the Choosing Wisely initiative consciously seeking
situations where the safer direction might not be usually
considered. For this reason, the RACGP is playing a key
role in the initiative, writing guidelines for medical
practitioners. Dr Justin Coleman, chair of the RACGP
component of the CWA initiative states that “…
bureaucrats and bean counters are denied access…” to
the development of medical guidelines.
National Bowel Cancer Screening Program in
Victoria – Update for GPs and Nurses
Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in people
living in Victoria, and the second most common cause of
cancer death. Bowel cancer screening, using a faecal
occult blood test every two years from the age of 50, has
the potential to reduce deaths from bowel cancer by up to
one third of the screened population.
The NBCSP and the Victorian Department of Health and
Human Services recognise the key role that general

Rural and Remote Health have published a new article
titled Exploration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
perspectives of Home Medicines Review.
Indigenous Australians suffer a high burden of chronic
disease and hospitalisation. This study explored reasons
for their low level of access to an important medication
safety tool.
