The Indonesian archipelago, stretching out in the
southeastern part of Asia, sits comfortably and precisely on
the equator. This tropical country lies between the Asian and
Australian continents, between the Pacific and Indian Ocean.
Having as many as 17,508 islands and a population of 225
million people, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country
in the world with the world’s largest Moslem population.
The Indonesian archipelago has been an important trade
zone since the 7th century when Sriwijaya Kingdom in
Palembang had religious and trade relations with China and
India. The Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms had already
developed since the beginning of the Gregorian calendar,
followed by the traders bringing in Islamic principles and
various powers from Europe who fought each other to have
the monopoly of spices in trading during the era of ocean
exploration. This is the reason why Indonesia has diverse
cultures substantially influenced by the European, Chinese,
Indian and Arab cultures. Stretching as far as 3,977 miles
between the Indian and Pacific Ocean, this country has land
territory as vast as 1,922,570 square km with waters
accounting for 3,257,483 square km.

Padang, Bukit Tinggi
Clock Tower - Bukit Tinggi
Padang is the largest city in West Sumatera. Since the
16th century Padang has been a trade centre. During the
16th and 17th centuries pepper was cultivated and
traded with India, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the
Netherlands. In 1663 the city came under the authority of
the Dutch. The Dutch built a trading post here in 1680.
The city came under British authority twice, the first time
from 1781 to 1784 during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War and
again from 1795 to 1819 during the Napoleonic Wars.
Afterwards the city was transferred back to the Netherlands.
Up to approximately 1780 the most important trade
product was gold, originating from the gold mines in the
region. When the mines were exhausted, the emphasis
turned to other products such as coffee, salts and textiles.
Padang is a common transit point for surfers traveling to
Batu Islands and Mentawai Islands and for tourists visiting
the West Sumatran highlands. Padang beach (known as
Taplau or Tapi Lauik) which located from Samudra Street
until Puruih, is well known for its beautiful sunset
Nestled in the highlands north of Padang in the Agam valley,
the town of Bukit Tinggi or ‘high hill’ is West Sumatera’s cultural
center. While Padang may be the modern commercial and
administrative hub, Bukit Tinggi is a bustling market town.
Although it is less than a degree south of the equator, Bukit
Tinggi has a refreshingly cool climate due to its elevation –
over 900 meters above sea level. While it rains here often, this
is not enough to deter travelers who come to enjoy what
many claim is the most hospitable city in Sumatera.
The city was known as Fort de Kock during colonial times
in reference to the Dutch outpost established here in 1825
during the Padri War. The fort was founded by Captain
Bauer at the top of Jirek hill and later named after the then
Lieutenant Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies,
Hendrik Merkus de Kock.

Lake Toba, Berastagi & Medan
Parapat - Lake Toba
Medan started as a village called Kampung Medan
(Medan Village). Kampung Medan was founded by Guru
Patimpus around the 1590s. Because Kampung Medan
sits on Tanah Deli (Land of Deli), Kampung Medan is also
referred as Medan-Deli. The original location of
Kampung Medan is an area where the Deli River meets
the Babura River.
Citizens here represent virtually every ethnicity in Indonesia
including Batak, Malay, Javanese, Minang, Acehnese, Indians
and Chinese.
For visitors, Medan is best known as the gateway to North
Sumatera with many travellers flying into the city and setting off
from here for adventures in the cool highlands of Lake Toba or
the wild Sumatran jungle.
The area which is now Medan was home to a community of
traders and seafarers, under the rule of Islamic Malay leaders. This
was until the Acehnese finally conquered the area after years of
battling in the early 17th century. During the period of conflict,
the plains were used as a battlefield between the two kingdoms
which is why Medan translates literally as field or battlefield from
Indian Hindi Language “Maidan”
The modern history of the area begins in the 1860’s when
entrepreneurs recognized the potential of the rich volcanic soil
here and began plantation agriculture. In 1865 an adventurous
Dutch entrepreneur introduced tobacco to the area ushering in a
new era of prosperity. This led to an influx of foreign investment
and a steady stream of European capitalists. Crops of tobacco,
rubber, oil palms, sisal and tea were all planted here. Thus from a
small village, Medan grew into a prosperous colonial city.
Medan
After independence, the population of Medan exploded and it is
now the third largest city in the country. Today the influence of
Medan’s colonial plantation past is reflected in the European
architecture of many of the cities biggest buildings. Medan has
become a blend of the modern and the ancient.
