Chairman Letter:
During Operation Protective Edge, as in previous rounds of fighting in the South, Soroka Medical Center was
at the forefront of treating the wounded. Life-saving teams at Soroka cared for the majority of the soldiers
wounded during the operation. In the 50 days of warfare, 1,263 casualties received treatment, among them
777 soldiers and 486 civilians, of whom 53 were seriously injured. There were more than 60 helicopter landings
on the hospital's helipad, evacuating the wounded from the Gaza Strip. Hundreds of surgical procedures were
carried out by surgeons from various specialties. The Trauma Unit, emergency rooms, operating rooms,
imaging facilities, and hospital wards worked around the clock, providing immediate responses for every
patient. The impressive mobilization of all the hospital teams and the close cooperation and coordination of
continuity of care with medical staff who treated soldiers in the field enabled us to provide optimal medical care
to the injured.
This intensity placed Soroka in the media spotlight. Dozens of VIPs arrived at the hospital, among them the
President and the Prime Minister, Knesset members, public figures, artists, and singers.
While the soldiers were fighting in Gaza for us, we were fighting for the lives of their comrades in arms in the
Trauma Unit, the operating rooms, and the Intensive Care Unit.
Against the background of these events, we have initiated the present conference, which will address the
integrated treatment of victims of combat injuries. Important issues, such as managing a hospital under fire,
continuity of care, ethical questions in the clinical treatment of the injured, and media-related matters in times
of war will be among the topics under discussion. These subjects will be explored by leading physicians from
Israel and abroad from the fields of general surgery, trauma, intensive care, anesthesia, and emergency
medicine.
