UNIVERSITY OF MAURITIUS/ MAHATMA GANDHI INSTITUTE Syllabus BA (HONS) INDIAN PHILOSOPHY (2010 /2011 – 2012/2013) 1. Title: BA (HONS) INDIAN PHILOSOPHY 2. Objectives a) To provide opportunities for a comprehensive study and understanding of Indian Philosophical concepts through analysis of primary texts and Commentaries thereon. b) To provide opportunities for exposure to Western Philosophical thought. c) To equip the student with a knowledge of Sanskrit and pedagogical skills. d) To provide opportunities for further studies in Indian Philosophy, Western Philosophy and Sanskrit. e) To relate philosophical problems to modern life. 3. GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Preference will be given to holders of an ‘A’ Level in Hinduism or equivalent 4. Programme Duration Minimum: Maximum: 5. 3 years 5 years Credit System 5.1 Introduction 5.1.1 The BA Programme is structured on the credit system and is run on a semester basis 5.1.2 A semester is of a duration of 15 weeks (excluding exams period) 5.1.3 A credit is a unit of measure, and the Programme is based on the following guidelines: 15 weeks of lectures and/or Tutorials: 1 credit 1 5.2 Programme Structure The B.A Programme is made up of a number of modules carrying 3 credits each, except the Dissertation which carries 6 credits. 5.3 Minimum Credits Required for the award of the Degree: 108 5.4 Breakdown of credits: Core taught modules 99 5.5 Dissertation GEM 6 3 Credits per semester Minimum 9 credits Maximum 24 credits (inclusive of Retake Modules) (Subject to Regulation 4 above) 6. MODE OF DELIVERY Modules are delivered on a face-to-face basis, unless otherwise specified. 7. ASSESSMENT 7.1 All modules will carry 100 marks and will be assessed as follows unless otherwise specified: 7.1.1 Written Examination of 2-hour duration at the end of every semester, carrying 70% of the total marks and Continuous Assessment carrying 30% of the total marks, unless otherwise stated. 7.1.2 Continuous Assessment will be based on assignment/s and should include at least one class test. 2 Letter Grade A+ A B C D F Grade Point 4.00 3.00 2.00 1.00 x ≥ 80 70 ≤ x < 80 60 ≤ x < 70 50 ≤ x < 60 40 ≤ x < 50 x < 40 0 N Symbols on Transcripts Ex S 8. Considered in CPA/GPA computation. Students to retake whole module Incomplete module/project/independent study due to medical/financial/other reasons (may be in 1 or both components of the module). Marks for CA or WE which are available will be retained; marks for incomplete component (WE or CA) to be added when available to arrive at total marks for module. Description Exemption in modules Satisfactory completion of Placement /Industrial Training/Portfolio/Seminars/Module(s) Module Weighting Modules will carry the weightings of 1, 3 or 5 depending on their status (introductory, intermediate or advanced).
