Vienna doesn’t only boast a large number of flagship stores from international labels
– the city’s designers also run their own shops. A rundown of the latest openings.
Soft and smooth collections featuring jersey and silk are the trademark of Christiane
Gruber, who studied fashion under Raf Simons and Viktor & Rolf at the University of
Applied Arts Vienna. Every item from her label Awareness & Consciousness is
finished using a special bleaching and dyeing process, creating limited edition runs of
unique pieces that have an unmistakable look. Gruber’s collections are available from
the recently opened A & C Store on Lindengasse in the seventh district. Franziska
Fürpass is another graduate of the fashion design course at the University of Applied
Arts, and operates the Femme Maison label together with visual artist Sia Kermani.
In her own words, her designs are characterized by “rough elegance”, exclusive
materials and innovative manufacturing processes. The Femme Maison store is
situated in the fashionable Servitenviertel, in Vienna’s ninth district.
Young Viennese designers Ida Steixner and Lena Krampf founded their
label, Meshit, in 2010 after completing their studies at Vienna’s Hetzendorf fashion
school. The next year, one of their collections was picked up by British fashion chain
Topshop. Their designs, with clear lines and a love of detail, are now available in their
own shop in the seventh district. Austrian designer Eva Poleschinski started fashion
label Ep Anoui in 2008, when she was 23 years old. Today, her pieces are featured
in international magazines such as Vogue, Elle, and Madame. Poleschinski’s new Up
Store Vienna and studio are located in a traditional old Viennese apartment, in a
side street off Mariahilfer Strasse. Julia Cepp has been managing her label mija t.
rosa since 2009. The designer has already been nominated for numerous prizes in
the area of sustainable fashion for her resource-friendly working method and
recycling techniques. In 2014, she remodeled her studio in the 15th district, where
she sells her timelessly casual designs in the front area.

Dreamy drawings
The Musée d'Orsay in Paris is making a selection of outstanding drawings
available to the Albertina for an exhibition.
"Degas, Cézanne, Seurat. The Dream Archive from the Musée d'Orsay" is the
exhibition's title. Two hundred works from the collection of 80,000 drawings
belonging to the Musée d'Orsay can be seen in Vienna between January and May.
They include works by pre-eminent artists such as Edgar Degas, Charles Baudelaire
and Paul Cézanne. The exhibition has been curated by Werner Spies, who is not only
director of the Musée national d'art moderne in Paris, but was also on friendly terms
with important drawers of the 20th century, including Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso.
Amongst the pieces on loan from the Musée d'Orsay are works that are already
complete in themselves. Regardless of whether it is a sketch or a finished work - the
drawing always bears the distinctive style of the artist. As the drawing requires only
little material, it offers ideals opportunities for experimentation. The museum's
collection of drawings encompasses self-portraits, notes on everyday life and visions.

Freud's Travels. Cultural experiences – psychoanalytical thinkinghits
The Sigmund Freud Museum dedicates an exhibition to the travels of the
world-famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud.
Sigmund Freud made numerous private and business trips in his lifetime. To mark
the 75th anniversary of his death on 23 September 2014, the exhibition in the
Sigmund Freud Museum ranges from Freud's first trip (the relocation) from Pribor to
Vienna via his tours to ancient sites in Italy and Greece and a presentation trip to the
East Coast of the USA, to his emigration to London. Documents, souvenirs and
photographs of his stays can be seen for the first time.
The period from the middle of the 1890s to the beginning of the First World War in
1914 marks the highpoint of Freud's travels. Family holidays lasting several weeks in
the Austrian Alps and in Bavaria were usually followed by extended tours
accompanied by family members or colleagues. His travels also took him to Croatia,
England and the Netherlands. In 1938, he fled with his family from the National
Socialists via Paris to London, where he died on 23 September 1939. Freud's holidays
as well as travel impressions from childhood influenced the formation of his theories
and represent an important factor in the development of psychoanalysis.
The exhibition is also dedicated to two lesser-known family members: Alexander
Freud (1866-1943) was considered one of the leading railway experts of the
Monarchy and regularly accompanied his brother Sigmund. Harry Freud (1909-1968)
was Sigmund's nephew and between 1932 and 1939 traveled to those European
cities previously visited by his uncle, in order to document them in photographs.

Art in the Kunstkammer Vienna
More than 2,100 valuable objects, which were collected by the emperors and
archdukes of Habsburg over centuries, are on display in the Kunstkammer
Vienna, one of the most important chambers of art and wonders in the
world.
The Habsburg emperors - above all Rudolf II. - were passionate collectors of these
treasures, which are now on show to the general public again in the
Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. At the heart of the collection is Benvenuto Cellini's
precious salt cellar, the Saliera, which dates to the middle of the 16th century.
Visitors are astonished by the many other works in gold, such as the valuable
breakfast service of Maria Theresia.
Numerous other art objects, which have been collected since the Middle Ages, can
also be seen: carvings, timepieces, paintings, sculptures, wall-hangings, coins,
weapons and a wide range of curiosities from the natural world. The so-called
"Natternzungenkredenz" (around 1450), including fossil sharks' teeth, considered to
be the mystical remains of dragons, is on display, as is the natural cast of a real
toad. A highlight is certainly the Dragon Bowl made from lapis lazuli. Drinking games
and all sorts of humorous vessels supplement the range of curious exhibits.
In any event, the value of this collection, which was restored and renovated between
2002 and 2012, cannot be measured. Because the so-called chambers of art and
wonder of the rulers were museums and represented the total extent of world
knowledge at the time. 2,162 objects are situated in Vienna and will be presented
afresh in 20 rooms. More than 1,000 years of history can be experienced in the
Kunstkammer on an area of 2,717 square meters. The oldest exhibit is an ivory table
from the 9th century, the youngest a ceiling painting from the year 1891.
