The New Garden Friend Newsletter of New Garden Friends Meeting March 17, 2015 Saturday March 21 starting at 8:00 a.m. Proceeds help fund the Young Friends spring trip. The half-price sale on Saturday March 28. Forum : Living in balance with creation It’s time to start thinking about NG scholarships! Next Sunday, March 22 at 9:45 a.m., Bill McNeil will join us in forum to share some lessons for living in balance with creation. We will discuss queries related to the stewardship testimony and the link between Earthcare and spirituality. Please join us. Each year New Garden Friends Meeting offers scholarship awards. Applications are available by e-mail request or in the meeting office and are due in by April 30, 2015. A note from Tim Lindeman and Nancy Walker: You are invited to a Faculty/Guest Artist Recital to be held Sunday, March 22 at 3:30 p.m. at the Recital Hall in the UNCG School of Music Building on the corner of Market and McIver. The concert is free and open to the public. Nancy Walker (voice) and Tim Lindeman (piano) will present a recital of music written for the duo. Some dissonant/ thorny, some “pop-ish,” some “French,” some “comedic,” all-American. This is a repeat of the March 10 recital we did at Guilford College. Women invited to Cora Worth Parson Circle Meeting where Ann Raper will talk about writing her new book. Meeting time is Wednesday, March 25 7:00 p.m. in the NGFM Parlor. Spring into Action: Faith Voices for Clean Energy Advocacy Day To learn more about this 2015 – 2017 program, please come to the Testing the Waters Retreat at Jamestown Friends Meeting (Greensboro) Saturday, April 18 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Come meet the core teachers of the “On Being a Spiritual Nurturer” program in a one-day contemplative retreat format. Program includes: - Introduction to ‘spiritual nurture’ and how it serves Quaker meetings. - Reflection on spiritual disciplines, prayer, and cultivating the inward life. - Small group experience to practice close listening and mutual support. - Question & Answer period about the program. Snacks, beverages, and light lunch provided. Free-will donations are gladly accepted to help defray expenses and the travel costs of the core teachers. Sally Bingham on March 25 at the NC General Assembly in Raleigh for the Faith Voices for Clean Energy Advocacy Day. We will meet with members of the General Assembly to hear their vision for North Carolina and to express our support for new and existing clean energy policies. We will also be hosting a webinar before Advocacy Day on the policy issues that we are watching. We will discuss what to expect and answer any questions you may have. Can’t join us in Raleigh? Nancy Upchurch Stentz Memorial Service at NGFM Friday March 20 You are invited to join The Bayard Rustin Center for Lgbtqa Activism, Education and Reconciliation and Friends Center at Guilford College for a showing of the documentary Brother Outsider and student panel on Tuesday March 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Bryan Jr. Auditorium at Guilford College. Learn more about this gay black Quaker and the impact he had on the Civil Rights Movement! Then hear from students about how students of color and the LGBTQ communities are organizing to continue the change that Bayard Rustin promoted throughout his life! Nancy (Nan) Upchurch Stentz, 66, of Greensboro died Tuesday, March 10, 2015 after a short battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, George Stuart Stentz, Jr; two sons, Dave (Karen) Eberenz of Greenville, Greg (Melissa) Stentz of Greensboro; eight grandchildren Chrissy, John, Ryann, Hannah, Rachel, Grace, Tate, Leah; one sister Judy (Tony Lowe) Upchurch of Fancy Gap, Va; one brother Jim (Gini Spencer) Upchurch of Orlando, Fl; two nephews, one niece. Nan had a passion for teaching and children. She taught for years at Mclver (then Gateway School) for special needs children. Nan received a Master of Arts degree in 1988. Later she volunteered with ESL children. A celebration of Nancy's life will be held 6 pm Friday, March 20 at New Garden Friends Meeting. Family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to AFSC or the American Cancer Society. C. Wess Daniels to lecture at New Garden on March 30 C. Wess Daniels will be the Judith Weller Harvey Quaker Scholar at Guilford College March 30 and 31. He will speak on themes from his new book, “A Convergent Model of Renewal” on Monday, March 30, 7:30 p.m. at New Garden Friends Meeting and at the NCYM (FUM) Ministers' Association meeting on Tuesday morning, March 31, at 9:00 a.m., also at New Garden Friends Meeting.
