We have positions open on the Steering Committee. Sponsorship Assistant Winter Bazaar Co-Chair Website Co-Editor General Officer Start your adventure now; email us! [email protected] A full list of positions available and a description of the responsibilities involved, is available on the IWC website : www.iwcmoscow.ru Dear members, First of all let me announce the huge success we achieved at the Winter Bazaar. All the credit and appreciation goes to our generous Embassies, sponsors, volunteers, visitors and of course you, our dear members. We also thank the Polish Embassy and the Ambassador of Poland, Katarzyna Pelczynska-Nalecz for being our gracious host in our February Meet &Greet. It was another success. In our IWC world we have different nationalities, languages, and religions but we are all gathered here supporting our humanity and giving with love to feed our souls. It doesn’t mater how small we can give, it can be as simple as a smile which can change someone mood or heal a pain, but with your support we can give more. I want to share with you my visit to one of the children’s houses--Don Bosco Children’s Home. I was touched by their meaningful work, how they are taking care of the children and working hard to provide them with what a child needs. The family atmosphere I saw and the satisfaction simply made my day special. Let me also thank our wonderful team at the charity board for their amazing work; they are the hidden soldiers. Time flies and we reached our mid-season but our calendar is rich and full. Many interesting cultural events are coming, embassies opening their treasure doors for us, art lovers get ready for our Art Auction, and of course our “Embassies of the World Dinner and Ball”. The “Embassies of the World Dinner and Ball” is coming in May this year. It’s a new season, with a new atmosphere and new surprises. We are cooking something special and I am happy to announce it will be an evening in Pettroff Palace. Every season through the newsletter I open my heart and write for you, but please I would like to hear from you. I treasure your opinions, ideas and feedback, and encourage you to join us as a steering committee member or as a volunteer. With your help, let us achieve more. Open your hearts before your hands and always remember the IWC gathering is simply giving with love. Happy International Women’s Day! The museum was established in the XVIII century together with Moscow State University and has been located in the present building since 1914. It was great to see friends after a long winter vacation and we had a lively time. One of our members, Victoria Pyrlik graciously provided musical accompaniment to a warm meeting. Even the weather cooperated and we had winter sun streaming through the ballroom picture windows overlooking the Kremlin and Manezh. The museum has a wonderful collection of minerals and our members were able to have a tour of the museum. It also hosts special events and programs for children, such as classical and contemporary musical concerts in the historical ballroom. Information about their activities can be found on the museum’s website. Victoria Pyrlik is a classical and jazz concert pianist. She began her musical career at the age of 6 and performs as a soloist and accompanist. Victoria won awards at several classical music competitions. She now performs regularly for Moscow companies, embassies, and organizations such as the International Women’s Club, GAAW and MPC Social Services. Victoria is also a piano teacher and teaches in both Russian and English. She merges best practices of the Russian, British and American piano teaching styles. She has experience working with young children, embassy families and high-profile Russian families. Victoria is eager to perform for your next event and can be reached at [email protected]. (+7916 613-21-66). Marina Zuskov PAGE 3 TS EN EV IW C REVIEW OF THE FEBRUARY IWC “MEET & GREET“ MEETING The February “Meet & Greet” is traditionally the second opportunity for (new) members to sign up for one of our many interest groups. This time the Polish Embassy was very kind to host this big event. Ambassador Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz warmly welcomed our members to her embassy. She was happy to see the rooms filled with so many ladies instead of the usual men. It was a wonderful atmosphere where old and new friends could meet and where many people were signing up for the various interest groups. Further more there was lovely food sponsored by Le Pain Quotidien, together with vouchers and WOSEBA provided us with very good coffee – not only to drink on spot, but also to carry home. The charity raffle was a big success: 50,400 RUR was raised for our charity projects and many ladies went home with one of the beautiful prizes. Hotel Radisson donated a 2 night stay for 2 persons in the Zavidovo resort, „BELLA Vostok” offered Polish cosmetics, Expat Salon gave vouchers for beauty treatments, the lead teacher of the Matryoshka painting interest group gave a hand painted matryoshka and last but not least the Polish embassy had arranged additional gifts of chocolates and fine cosmetics. We would like to thank all of you who bought the tickets and of course a big thank you to our generous sponsors! We were also overwhelmed by the amount of socks and we are still counting, there are about a 1000 pairs! We are very thankful for such a great effort in helping people in need to keep their feet warm! Mireille Vrouenraets PAGE 4 IW C REVIEW OF THE JANUARY PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S EVENING EV EN TS For the first time in the - granted, not so long - history of the Professional Women’s Evenings, we welcomed a diplomat as guest speaker. Ms Signe Matteus, Director of the Consular Section at the Embassy of Estonia, luckily wasn’t afraid of this challenge. Ms Matteus gave an overview of her career as an expat, and used situations she encountered in the various countries she’s worked to illustrate her responsibilities and the skills required for diplomatic work. The consular section of your embassy definitely does more than handing out visas! Ms Matteus argued that consular services are “diplomacy for the people”, and all participants agreed after listening to her presentation. During the subsequent discussion, we even had the opportunity to see Ms Matteus’ diplomatic skills in action, when the debate became very lively at one point. REVIEW OF THE FEBRUARY PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S EVENING Those that didn’t make it to the February Professional Women’s Evening missed a very interesting event: our guest speakers of the evening, Ms Laura Tourtellotte and Ms Edith Permen, gave a highly instructive and substantiated presentation on domestic violence. This is clearly not the lightest topic and the problem is severe in Russia, but the efforts made by ANNA, the National Center for Prevention of Violence for which Ms Tourtellotte and Ms Permen work, are making an important difference – a hopeful message for all participants to take home. Laura and Edith, thank you very much for stepping in last minute as our guest speakers: it really meant a lot to us that we didn’t have to cancel our February PWE! We would also like to thank Hotel InterContinental once more for hosting and sponsoring our events – without their generous support we wouldn’t be able to organize the PWEs for free for our members. Kelly Van Bladel PAGE 5 TS EN EV IW C THE 2014 IWC “WINTER BAZAAR” Shopping “From Around the World” for a Cause The International Women’s Club of Moscow (IWC) held its annual Winter Bazaar at Radisson Slavyanskaya Hotel on Saturday, November 29. Mrs. Afrah Alfaddaghi, IWC President, is proud that, thanks to the heart-warming support of Moscow’s diplomatic community, the 26th edition of the Club’s largest charity event was once again a great success: “This year a total of 70 embassies supported the Winter Bazaar – a fantastic achievement! A special thanks goes to the embassies of the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Hungary, Ireland, Greece, Japan, Kuwait, Slovakia and Turkey, our top contributors, and to GlavUpDK for their ongoing valuable cooperation. Only the combined support of all embassies and other sponsors together could result in the 7,041,762 rubles in proceeds raised, which goes to the charity projects supported and monitored by the IWC. This impressive fundraising effort would not have been possible without the strong commitment of the business community in Moscow, and therefore we would like to thank the numerous companies that supported their embassy’s stand and/or the raffle. This year more than 280 wonderful prizes, kindly donated by businesses and embassies, inspired visitors to buy tickets. The resulting raffle income was almost 390,000 rubles, a significant contribution to the overall Winter Bazaar result.” Participating Embassies Angola Latvia Sudan Armenia Lebanon Syria Austria Madagaskar Tanzania Belarus Malaysia Turkey Belgium Mauritius Turkmenistan Bulgaria Mongolia Uzbekistan Cameroon Morocco Vietnam Chad Namibia China Nepal Cote d'Ivore The Netherlands Latin American Countries: Argentina Croatia Norway Brazil Czech Republic Oman Chile Egypt Pakistan Colombia Estonia Palestine Ecuador Gabon Poland Mexico Greece Romania Nicaragua Hungary Russia Paraguay India Saudi Arabia Peru Indonesia Senegal Puerto Rico Ireland Serbia Uruguay Italy Singapore Japan Slovak Republic Other Sponsoring Embassies: Jordan Slovenia Algeria Kuwait South Korea New Zealand 1001 CVET Adil Işık Afrodita Ahmad Tea AkzoNobel Al Trade Anglo-Info Moscow Ararat Park Hyatt Moscow ART IVAL Arya Tekstil AUTOCENTAR MERKUR Azimut Hotel BALKAN FOOD Bar Vintage BARRY CALLEBAUT NL RUSSIA Bengawan Solo Berha BESTFOODS BG Photography Bikram Yoga Moscow Bkycno Keuk BMW Bogdarnya Farm Hotel Bolero.su flamenco dance company BOLGARSKAYA KUHNYA BORALEX - GYUYLIAN - DUC D’O Bosfor Boskalis Brand Extensions Russia BRUSSELS AIRLAINES BUDISAVLJEVIC Bulgari commerce Burda International BusyEasy Capital Concierge Carres Rouges City class CLINIQUE COLIC Colins Cool Connections De Nachtwacht DELICATESSA BVBA Starbrook Chocolate Delphi Foods DELTA DIJAMANT Elesko Aquarius Group Budějovický Budvar Chipita ChocoMe Crocus Kozanis Dave‘s Photo Studio Dionyssos Imports Dzintars Eco-Invest Corinthia Hotel Petersburg St. Eliki Olive Oil EMCO EuroWine Expat Salon expat.ru Family Care Fedon S.A. Around 3,500 visitors and 600 volunteers, both expats and locals, joined for the unique concept of “shopping from around the world”, enjoyed exotic food and discovered interesting gifts from all continents. This year’s cultural program exceeded all expectations with excellent dance and music performances and a wonderful fashion show offered by the embassies of Colombia, Ecuador, Greece, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, Romania, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. Although the annual Winter Bazaar is the largest contributor to the IWC’s fundraising efforts, the Club organizes several other charity events throughout the year, including the fabulous Embassies of the World Dinner and Ball. They read Russian literature from Pushkin till Pelevin and talk about it. Every book on the reading list is read in English (or any other language) by all members and then the background, life, and work of the author and the book itself are discussed by the group. The group started several years ago and is now led, with great enthusiasm, by Amanda Langford. Each member hosts the group a few times per year and serves a simple lunch (it is no cooking group nor is it a competition but it is always delicious!) and the members take turns in presenting a background or a book from the list. Sometimes the group visits an interesting exhibition, house-museum or other location that is in a way connected with the book they are reading. These experiences give a better understanding and a real ‘feel’ for the book. Therefore, the group is looking forward to the Russian Year of Literature 2015, with many special events and projects about Russian literature. Mireille Vrouenraet Meet the ladies of the “Lunch and Literature“ Group PAGE 9 E R LT U U C IW C RUSSIAN TRADITIONS THE ORTHODOX EASTER Easter – the most important and the oldest festival of the Christian Church. Easter Sunday was celebrated 1500 years before Christ. First it was a symbol of the Jewish nation’s escape from Egyptian slavery. Later, after the resurrection of Christ it became the celebration of victory over death. Now it is held on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the northern spring equinox. In Russia we have the Orthodox Church. So there are some differences in Orthodox and Catholic or Protestant Easter. First, Catholics and Orthodox Christianity use different Paschal tables and calendars to calculate the date of Easter for each year. Catholic Easter is always earlier or on the same day as Orthodox one. This year Catholic Easter falls on April 5 and Orthodox Easter falls on April12. Second, despite Easter being the main Russian religious feast, it has no status of public holiday which can be accompanied by Easter Friday or Easter Monday as in many countries. I suppose the reasons for this could hide in almost 80 years of Soviet regime when the only allowed religion for Russian people was faith in Communism. Third, there are differences in Easter traditions in Russia and European countries. Born in Germany in XVI century, the Easter Bunny became a popular legendary gift-giving character in European and other countries. Chocolate eggs, hot cross buns, and egg hunting are common throughout the English-speaking world. In my country, the main traditions are to decorate eggs (red as color of Life and Victory used more often) then to bake Kulich (Easter cake) and to prepare Paskha (Easter dessert made of curds). Kids liked to play with eggs or fight with eggs by pairs. Decorated Paschal eggs were also main gifts for this festive occasion for many people including the Russian imperial family. By the way, some of these incredibly beautiful Faberge eggs ordered by Emperors are permanently displayed at the Kremlin Armoury. Every year on Great Saturday people in churches wait for the Holy Fire, which arrives to Moscow from Jerusalem by charter flight and is then distributed to other cities to light candles. That is why Easter light plays an important role in celebrations. People bring to churches their dishes that were prohibited during the most strict and long lasting Great Lent to sanctify it before eating. On Easter Sunday after keeping silent for a few days church bells ring out the most bright and joyful noise. There is a belief that if a young lady makes a wish at this time to find worthy man for marriage she could meet him very soon. Within a week any person could ring church bells. Usually there is a queue and bells ring non-stop. Customary Paschal greeting on this day is: “Christ is risen!” to which the response is: “Truly He is risen!” followed by exchanging a triple kiss. So you shouldn’t worry about many people kissing on April 12. Daria Ivanova PAGE 10 IW RUSSIAN HISTORY PETROFF PARK AND PALACE C C U LT U R E The Petroff Palace is a gem of Russian architecture, located in the modern downtown of Moscow. A small green area around Petrovsky traveling palace (or Petroff Palace) is only a part of the former park located here and which is known as one of the most picturesque parks in Moscow. It appeared in the 19th century and occupied a much larger area, including the territory where currently Dynamo Stadium is located. Nevertheless, our story shall begin from the Palace. This is one of the most famous architectural structures in Moscow. Travel palaces were needed to provide members of the royal family traveling from St. Petersburg to Moscow with opportunities to rest and prepare themselves for their ceremonial entrance to Kremlin. In 1775, the same year Tsaritsyno was acquired, Catherine II ordered a travel palace to be built behind Tverskaya Zastava, on vacant lands owned by Vysoko-petrovsky monastery, commemorating the victory over the Ottomans, as Turks were called at the time. Construction was entrusted to Matvey F. Kazakov, an outstanding architect, and lasted seven years. This original building was built in a combination of Gothic and Turkish styles. Catherine first came to it in 1787. All Russian Emperors paid visits to the Palace. Petroff Palace was the last step in the sovereigns’ ascension to the throne as they stopped here for a refreshing break before arriving at the coronation ceremony, which always took place in Moscow. For example, Paul I arrived here before his coronation. A significant, albeit notorious, guest of this palace was Napoleon, who fled here from the burning Moscow. In these words of Pushkin, some of the most dramatic pages of Russian history are depicted with an incredible precision: Here stands, surrounded by its grove, Petrovsky Palace, grim and proud Of recent glory that bestowed On it was by Napoleon Who waited, vainly, drunk with pride, That Moscow, kneeling, brings him keys From Kremlin on a silver platter; Alas! My Moscow refused And gave him not the feast, but roast; A sweeping fire, as parting present, And, lost in his unhappy thoughts, Napoleon would watch the glow Of burning city, ever proud, Foreboding even from the distance. PAGE 11 E R LT U U C IW C During the 1812 war, Napoleon Bonaparte’s headquarters were set up in Petroff Palace. From this very place, Napoleon watched the fire of Moscow, the city that refused to bow down to the conqueror. The Palace, ravaged after Napoleon’s flight from Moscow, was reconstructed by the Russian Emperor Nicholas I. Once again, the renovated halls of the Palace were ready to welcome the members of the royal family, as well as receive important noble delegations. After the War of 1812, restoration of Moscow began, leading to significant changes in the city. The boulevard Ring was created and many neighbourhoods were restored adhering to the same architectural style. The spontaneously built clusters of houses which were destroyed by the great fire gave way to planned streets and prospects. Thus, in 1827, Petroff Palace was surrounded by a landscape park with alleys planned like rays arising from the palace; a pond was dug out, several dams created, etc. The new park quickly became very popular. There was a summer theater, a building for concerts, a swing, several gazebos, billiard houses, baths and small restaurants. Presently, the area of the park has decreased significantly, but some of its territory remains untouched. Built in the 18th century, the Palace has changed its function several times during its long history. It was once used as military headquarters, a museum, and an educational institution. Today, after a global reconstruction, the Palace has restored its original function and welcomes both business and leisure travelers as a new hotel and business center in the heart of Moscow. IW C DON BOSCO DAY CELEBRATION C H A R IT IE S A special night of song, dance and poetry by Moscow’s most vulnerable children has been hailed as a ‘great success’ by organisers. Children from the Don Bosco Children’s Home hosted the artistic event on February 5 to raise awareness about the center. The group dedicated their performance to Saint Don Bosco, the patron of the home, which currently cares for 36 children aged between 7 and 18. Unlike many children’s homes in the city, most children at Don Bosco have a living parent who placed them at the center voluntarily when they were unable continue supporting them – usually due to extreme poverty. The performance included a showcase of Kyrgyz national dance and song, a scene from the Baltic fairytale Castle of Liars, and a puppet show telling the tale of the “Three Little Pigs”. “The children worked so hard for this show and it was a great success,” said Ludmila Maslennikova, one of the centre’s small team of staff who prepared the programme. “This performance was a celebration of the children’s work and lives- even though they face many difficulties, they put their positivity and joy into everything they do, and we want to celebrate that. Just like all other children, they need and deserve a chance to express themselves artistically and have their voices heard. “Even though their parents weren’t all there to see them, having so many people turn up to support them was a huge confidence boost.” Wiktoria Zielinska, IWC member and event co-organizer, said, “We would like the say a huge thank you to everyone who came to support the event. A special thank you goes to our guests from the International Women’s Club, who have been generous supporters of the Home for a long time, and Karen Janjua, wife of the Pakistani ambassador, who gave up her time to see us. It’s only the generosity of so many people – not only those who give donations, but also the volunteers who give up their time, which allows the Home to continue their important work. PETERSBURG Do you find it hard to get your teenage boys out of the house to do something fun other then have a nice (pizza) meal or go for a ballgame? So do I, but we visited St. Petersburg for a few days with the whole family this winter and the boys really liked it. Walking (racing) up all the steps in St. Isaac Cathedral to enjoy the beautiful view was just the beginning. We all enjoyed the walk along the river Neva up to Vasilievsky Island, admiring the historic buildings. Because of the boys’ modern online gadgets, we instantly learned interesting little facts about famous landmarks we passed. Did you know that on major public holidays the torches on top of the Rostral Columns are lit? If you like weird things you can also visit the bizarre collection of the Kunstkamera on the riverbank. This museum, established by Peter the Great, is dedicated to preserving natural and human curiosities and rarities. The large collection of human and animal fetuses with anatomical deficiencies used for research around 1700 is still on display today, but it is definitely a bit of an ‘acquired taste’. Crossing the bridge to Petrogradsky Island we saw a huge helicopter flying past. The boys got all excited. It looked like it was flying a scenic route over St. Petersburg and it was going to land very close by… Indeed it did! The helicopter landed right opposite the Peter and Paul Fortress and did panoramic flights for tourists. They offered a very good price, so the boys saw St. Petersburg from the air and thoroughly enjoyed it! The next must see for the boys was the (huge) Military Historical Museum of Artillery directly across the Peter and Paul Fortress. This museum holds many interesting exhibits, both indoor and outdoor. You can travel through time starting with the cannons of the regiments of Peter the Great and end in a room dedicated to the AK-47 and its designer Mikhail Kalashnikov. In the evening the boys joined me for a beautiful ballet, to balance out their very male activities! Mireille Vrouenraets PAGE 16 GET FIT FOR SUMMER! OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES IW C H EA LT H Are you looking to be more active in the city or do you want to get fit for the summer? We have some recommendations on what types of activities you can do and where! After a long, sometimes very cold winter, people in Moscow are looking forward to staying outside during the weekends or after work. And all the public parks and green areas seem to be so inviting. Not only in the suburban areas, but also in the city centre there are some beautiful green space and forests. These location are the best if you are looking for a recreational escape or if you are simply looking do some sports. So how about jogging? An especially beautiful route passes along the Moscow River and runs through Neskuchnyi Sad and Gorky Park, which are Moscow’s most popular parks along the river. A good starting point is in the southwest of the city, opposite the Luzhniki Stadium ( at Metro Vorob’evy Gory). Now follow the new way direct near the river, that was built in autumn 2014. Soon the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour with its famous cupola will appear. You will then see the prominent towers of the Rossijskaja Akademija Nauk (Russian Academy of Sciences) building on the right hand side between the wooded hills. Now continue forward to Moskovskiy Teatr Muz’ki, cross under the bridge Krymskiy Most and you will see the new Tretyakov Gallery with its impressive fountains. Finally you will reach the channel and the towers of Kremlin in their resplendency. It is possible to run the same way back on this side of the river because there is no traffic. You could also catch the Metro at Kropotinskaya, you are between 45 and 60 minutes on the way. If you feel like you want to get more from your sportive training, there is also the Nordic Walking Interest Group at IWC (email: [email protected]). Bianca Turtur THANK YOU!
