President`s Message - The Art League of Germantown

building, you and other guests learned how to make more
time for your art in your individual busy schedule, called
your life. We welcomed the candid artist's talk from Leslie
Riley who knows personally and has studied with our
ALOG founder, Lynne Oakes. Thanks to Lynne and our
Vice President, Marge Wasson for inviting Leslie Riley to
share with us her experiences and life challenges of fitting
in our artwork and creative processes. As Leslie so
perfectly put it when she asked herself about when would
be a good time to follow her passion, her dreams and art
which makes her feel good, "If not now, when?".
In This Issue:
April will again bring to Black Rock Center for the Arts, the
ALOG Shades of Spring Show. However, do you know
that when you exhibit in the show this year you are
exhibiting in the newly renamed gallery? Black Rock's
main gallery has been renamed as "The Kay Gallery" after
the Kay family. An unprecedented gift made by Lauren
and Rick Pollin, The Kay Gallery was named in 2014 in
loving memory of Jack and Ina Kay. The Kay family have
been major supporters of the Jewish, social services,
education and arts communities in the greater
Washington, DC area and beyond. A few ALOG members
were invited to attend the festivities.

April 2015
Dear friends,
I would like to congratulate all ALOG members who have
sold artwork or won an award for their artwork in our
community, including, but not limited to those who
exhibited recently in our art exhibition at Kentland's
Mansion. Bravo for submitting those "Calls to Artists" and
doing what it takes to sell your own artwork. It is no small
task. You should be commended for your bravery to put
your art out into the world, your tenacity in filling out forms
and getting things prepared for exhibition and for the
correct decisions you are making for yourself. Please
share what you have learned from your experiences with
other ALOG members. Thank you for being professional
and helping uphold ALOG's good name throughout our
county and beyond. Recently, I spoke at the The Frederick
County Art Association (FCAA) (http://www.fcaamd.org)
and was kindly and warmly welcomed. It is because the
known good reputation of so many of you preceded me. I
believe there is a lot that like minds in this artist's
community can learn together.

This past month of March, if you attended our ALOG
meeting in the beautiful Black Rock Center for the Arts

This Spring, as we wind up another year together, we will
be announcing Board Member nominations. If you have
had an interest in serving on the ALOG Board, please
make that known to me or another Board Member. ALOG
takes a break from our General Meetings in the Summer,
then they reconvene in the Fall. Stay tuned to our
newsletter where we will announce our end of year
activities.
Don’t miss the April 1 ALOG Member Meeting at 7:15 pm
in The Kay Gallery (formerly the Main Gallery) at
BlackRock, when we will celebrate the season with a
wonderful presentation by Ikebana floral designer Gloria
Hege.
“Floral design can be much more than a bouquet or a
centerpiece,” Gloria tells us, previewing the presentation
and demonstration that she will give at our meeting. “We
will talk about the overlap of design principles in art and
floral design, and look in detail at sculptural aspects used
in Ikebana, the art of Japanese floral design.” Gloria
plans to display a variety of sculptural materials that can
be used in floral design, including rope, crochet wire,
bamboo, midollino reed and leaves. She will bring several
arrangements to show, and offer slides of recent floral
designs that will illustrate the overlap of design principles.
The very nature of this presentation means it will resonate
with artists across many different mediums, and should
give us a great chance to cross-fertilize among the many
talents represented in ALOG. (Forgive my floral allusions).
Keep the creative juices flowing in your life. It will reward
you and others around you in many ways.

Gloria Hege is an independent floral designer who has
participated in many floral exhibitions, including several
that draw connections between floral design and fine art.
She is an active member of the Independent Floral
Designers Association of Maryland as well as Ikebana
International, Washington, DC Chapter 1.
This will be a unique and inspiring evening for all ALOG
artists. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Baltimore Watercolor Society: 2015 Mid-Atlantic Regional
Watercolor Exhibition
The BWS is having its open juried annual art competition.
The entry deadline is March 21, 2015 and the show will be
June 3-July1 at the Black Rock Arts Center. There is a
$35 entry fee for non-members and $30 fee for members.
The juror is Mark Mehaffey, a watercolorist.

Delaplaine Arts Center Annual Juried Exhibit

The Delaplaine Arts Center in Frederick is having its
annual juried exhibit. The exhibit is May 2-June 20. The
juror is Dorothy Moss, a curator at the National Portrait
Gallery. No further information about entry deadline or
cost, unless you register for an account.
All pieces must be framed or gallery-wrapped with the
sides painted and finished. No sets (diptychs, triptychs,
etc.) will be accepted. Artists are encouraged to show
work not shown in previous ALOG shows, and work will be
hung as space permits*. Each piece must have a label
attached containing artist’s name, title, medium and price.

Jerry’s Artarama 3rd Annual Self Portrait Contest
This is an online portraiture contest. Entries must be selfportraits and submitted before April 5th. Since this is an

Montgomery College: Call for Proposals

The Department of Visual Arts and Design are accepting
proposals for exhibition space at Montgomery College.
The deadline for proposals is April 15, 2015 for the
themed exhibits. The proposals will be reviewed by an
exhibition committee, members are currently not known.

Art @ the Park: Friends of Quiet Waters Park Annapolis,
MD
The annual Art @ The Park in Annapolis is having a call
for entries for juried exhibit. The entry deadline is April 4,
2015 with a $25 entry fee. The show is October 17-18.

Wine with the Masters
Here’s a fantastic new way to combine painting with
socializing. Sip wine while creating your own masterpiece
inspired by the masters! Not an artist? Not a problem. Our
instructors will guide you in each one-night class. You will
go home with a painting you can call “uniquely yours” and,
hopefully, a new-found interest and talent you’ll want to
explore. Registration closes one week before class start

Date Night with Glass and Grapes
A fun evening will be had by all with plates and potables.
Enjoy sipping and snacking, while letting your creativity
guide your own beautiful design for a fused glass plate.
Come with a significant other, a friend, or by yourself. With
each registration you will make one 6” plate. Fused glass
plates have many uses including candle holder, soap dish,
a place to put your jewelry, a spoon rest, or just put it on a
plate stand and say “isn’t that pretty, I made it”. Students
of all skill levels will learn to score, break, and layer glass.
We will also discuss the tricks of the trade to make your
very own special piece.

Formatting Guidelines
for Submitting Photographs
Photographs of our artwork and events are an important
way to publicize our craft and art league. Here is the
format for submitting images for our newsletter, website
Gallery page, Facebook, etc.
Each image should be 180 dpi or greater and 4”
or larger on the longest dimension of the image
All of these can be used to post photos of work, shows,
etc. These different sources can be used to publicize our
shows to the public. Even during a show, we can post real
time photos and messages to attract more viewers. The
more of us posting on our personal accounts, as well as
these group accounts, will provide a great deal of publicity
and might bring in more viewers/purchasers. Our ultimate
goal!

beginning of the skills you need, or pick up in
the middle where you might feel you 'left off'.
Lynne offers one-on-one classes for students
of all ages that cover basic drawing skills
through painting in oil or watercolor.
