A New Twist on Developmental Math and English Courses

A high percentage of community college students place into developmental courses. Research indicates that students who
spend many semesters in developmental courses have fewer chances of completing their sequence and thus their academic
programs. Learn about successful strategies both our English and Math departments (Quantway) are using to accelerate progress through developmental courses.

Best Practices in Online Teaching

This session will share best practices of do’s and don’ts in teaching online with the emphasis on engaging online discussions
and effective module formation.

Learn about globally networked experiential learning in which faculty can enhance their courses by embedding collaborations
with international partners. The use of both synchronous and asynchronous technology tools will be explored. Learn about the
benefits, challenges, and overall experiences of a faculty member who is collaborating with Nanjing University in China.

A Title III grant has enabled RCC to offer many support services focused on academics as well as the inclusion of technology

they are truly making a difference in terms of better retention and improved academic success.

An increase of over 1,000,000 STEM jobs is projected for the current decade. However, there are not enough students to fill
them. Many students who start with an interest in a STEM field end up going in a different direction. This presentation will look
at strategies at several levels--government, college, individual faculty, and student--to retain the students we have and interest
new ones.

Biography
Dr. Cliff L. Wood has dedicated his career to community college leadership, serving in senior management
over four decades at five institutions. He has served as President of Rockland Community College since 2004,
overseeing major growth in the College’s physical plant, enrollment, community involvement and workforce
development.
Dr. Wood led statewide advocacy efforts on behalf of community colleges in his capacity as President of the
New York Community Colleges Association of Presidents, a position he held from 2009-13. As a key member
of NY Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development Council, Dr. Wood plays
an important role in advancing the economy of the Hudson Valley.
Dr. Wood provides volunteer leadership to numerous organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Rockland Holocaust Museum & Study Center, Rockland Business Association, Cuttington University (Liberia,
West Africa) and others.
In 2013, Dr. Wood received several awards, including the Rockland Economic Development Corporation
Award of Distinction; Distinguished Alumnus Award, Texas A&M University Commerce and the JCC Rockland “J” Award.
Dr. Wood earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees from Texas A & M University at Commerce.
He and his wife, Wylene Branton Wood, a recognized community leader, are the parents of four adult children
and have four grandchildren.
