Star Connections Still to come this week Memorial Service and Eucharistic Adoration Friday, May 8 Join us on Friday, May 8, for our Memorial Service at 7:15 a.m. in the St. John the Evangelist Chapel to honor the AHA community members who have recently passed away. Our final Eucharistic Adoration of this school year will follow from 8 – 11 a.m. We’ll be saying a special communal rosary at 9:30 a.m. to honor the Blessed Mother and Child. Prayer petition cards are located in a basket at the lobby front desk and in the Chapel. Please join us in prayer! AP exams continue AHA students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses are taking end-of-year exams during the weeks of May 4 and May 11. School starts late at 8:25 a.m. Buses run at their regular times, and there's supervision for students who arrive at school before classes begin. Senior party parent meeting is May 13 The senior party parent meeting is Wednesday, May 13, 7 p.m. in the Commons. The planning committee will accept permission slips with payment, provide details, discuss logistics, answer questions, and provide volunteer opportunities the night of the event. Nominations for staff award due by May 14 The Parent Association will honor a non-teaching AHA staff member at the end of this school year. We would like to collect nominations from the AHA community! In keeping with this year's AHA Way theme, we are looking for a non-teaching staff member who truly embodies community. This non-teaching staff member may have helped you or your family, or you may have witnessed this person assisting others in the AHA community. While it may be a "part of their job" - tell us of a positive experience concerning that person that left you feeling that AHA is a place where people are empowered to succeed. Friday, May 15, is an E-schedule day On E-schedule days, school is dismissed early at 1 p.m. and buses leave at that time. There's no hot lunch on E-schedule days. We want you to know Students registering for Pre-AP Chemistry must take the PreAP Chemistry entrance exam on May 18 Students who are hoping to register for Pre-AP Chemistry next year need to take the PreAP Chemistry entrance exam on Monday, May 18. Any questions or concerns can be directed to Chemistry Teacher Jillian Harvalis in room 1345. About the Honor Guard for graduation and Celebration Day Parents, if your graduating senior has a younger sibling or cousin at AHA, we’d love for that sibling to participate in the Honor Guard for Celebration Day and graduation. The Honor Guard leads our graduates into these events. Your senior should have received an informational e-mail from Mrs. Wicklund. If we missed your family, or if you have further questions, please contact Sarah Wicklund at [email protected]. If your senior's laptop needs repair... In order to make the laptop drop-off and pick-up process run smoothly at the end of the school year, we are asking seniors whose laptops are damaged or in need of repair to bring them to the helpdesk within the next two weeks. This will allow staff ample time to have things fixed before we require all computers to be handed in for re-imaging at the end of the school year. The helpdesk is open between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on school days. Have you considered hosting an international student in your home? The number of international students attending AHA is growing. These students need home placements to help them experience American life and culture. If you have thought about hosting an international student in your home, now may be the perfect time. This year's after-graduation Senior Party is Sunday, June 7, at 9:30 p.m. to Monday, June 8, at 5:30 a.m. at Brunswick Zone XL in Lakeville. There will be food, bowling, laser tag, billiards, an arcade room, and other fun entertainment. The cost of the party is $130. You fill find the permission slip on the Parent Association page of the AHA website. Go to www.academyofholyangels.org. Click on Parents and then on Parent Association to download it. Parents, here’s senior poster information Senior posters are a long tradition at AHA. Think of this poster as an over-sized scrapbook page that captures favorite memories from your senior's school days. This year we will hang the posters in the AHA Commons, so they will be on display at the reception following the Baccalaureate Mass on June 3. You will then be able to take your poster home with you after the reception. Detailed poster instructions are available on the AHA website. Go to www.academyofholyangels.org. Click on Parents and then on Parent Association to find them. Your completed poster should be dropped off at the school office between May 25 and June 2. Board of Trustee candidates chosen – a note from Brian McGrane, chair of AHA’s Governance Committee I am pleased to announce the following individuals have accepted nominations to join the AHA Board: Susan Oeffling, CSJ Michael Jones The Board will vote on these nominees at its annual meeting on May 26. If additional candidates are presented to the Board by way of a petition signed by 10 percent of current parents (one parent per student or students), the Board will consider them based on the Governance Committee’s recommended criteria for Board membership. Nominee name, bio/resume, and 63 or more parent signatures should be delivered to Sue DePauw in the AHA President’s office by Friday, May 15. From Taher Food Service to families of seniors: Message for all seniors... Congratulations all graduating AHA seniors - this is the first class we have watched grow from freshmen to seniors. It has been an interesting and rewarding four years! The Holy Angels students are very special, and parents should be so proud of their children...they are maturing into polite, accomplished young adults. From our perspective in the foodservice, the word polite is huge. Please and thank you are not the norm at the public school and college level. Hats off to all of you! As we wind down this spring, we are preparing for graduation, and it is a time when all accounts must be paid in full. Please ask your student to watch his or her account balance and prepare for those final days of school. Lives are easier and less stressful if these balances are paid before the last week of school. Reminder to parents about narcotic medications at school We would like to remind you that the possession of narcotic medications at AHA is an expellable offense. If your student needs narcotics, either for ADHD (e.g. Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta) or for post-op or post-injury pain control, the medication MUST be kept in the Nurse’s Office and the proper paperwork must be on file. A “Consent to Administer Prescription Medication” form, which can be found on our website (http://academyofholyangels.org/academics/guidance-and-counseling), must be completed with both physician and parent signatures and submitted along with a supply of the medicine in its original pharmacy container. Students will go to the Nurse’s Office for administration. This medication can NOT be transported to or from school by a student. Parents must bring in the medication as well as pick up any unused supply of the drugs. Selling narcotics is a felony offense if arrested. Remember that these drugs carry a price on the open market. Even if your child does not take Ritalin or Adderall at school, you should keep close tabs on your supply of that drug at home. People who want this drug and the price that they are willing to pay can be very persuasive to a naïve student. If you have questions about this policy or any medication policy, refer to the Student Handbook or call School Nurse Jan Nordstrom. A look ahead Eighth graders will be taking placement tests at AHA during the week of May 18. Eighth graders who have registered to attend AHA next year will be on campus during the late afternoons the week of May18 taking placement tests. Here's the schedule. Tests begin at 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 18--English Tuesday, May 19--Math Wednesday, May 20--Science Thursday, May 21--World Language Friday, May 22--Make-up test day Need fun summer plans for your younger kids? AHA Summer Experience Camps offered in June AHA Summer Experience 2015 is right around the corner! During the last three weeks in June, Holy Angels offers a variety of camps for students entering grades two to nine. These day camps offer a range of opportunities from basketball, computer animation, and theater to video production, cross country, and soccer. In 2014 more than 400 students registered for Summer Experience. We can’t wait for this summer, and we hope your family will be able to join us! From the College and Career Center AHA to offer ACT prep class Here's information about the June ACT Prep Class offered at Holy Angels on June 10, 11 and 12. College and Career Center to offer College Boot Camp in August The College and Career Counselors are offering an opportunity to attend a College Boot Camp on August 4 – August 6. The Boot Camp will give your student time to think about the college process and get ready for the applications that they will be completing in the fall. The Boot Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day and will cost $200. We will have need-based scholarships available for those students that are unable to pay $200 to attend. Contact your student’s college counselor for information on scholarships. We need at least eight registered students in order to offer the camp. If you are interested, please sign your student up as soon as you are able. The deadline to apply will be June 4, 2015. See the flyer here, or find one in the College and Career Center. We need this information for Celebration Day and Graduation. We really need to know about every admission decision so please remind your senior to see us so we can celebrate with them or provide suggestions or alternative college options. Once your senior makes a final decision on college, please remind them to see their college counselor so we are aware of their plans. We will send a final transcript to the college they decide to attend after graduation in June. About the Newman Connection The Newman Connection is an organization with the goal of keeping youth connected to the church by connecting our graduates with campus ministry options on college campuses. Information about The Newman Connection can be found at www.newmanconnection.com. We will be providing The Newman Connection with a list of our graduates and the colleges they are attending.
