Overview
The Academy for Family Coach Training (AFCT) provides foundational and advanced
coach training programs to aspiring, new and seasoned coaches with the primary focus on
coaching teens, parents and families. Graduates are awarded the designation of “Certified
Family Coach.”
The Academy for Family Coach Training launched its first course in 2001, led by
founder Diana Sterling. We take a very personal “mentorship” approach to our teaching
and have certified over 325 individuals in 30+ countries.
Our flagship course, The Family Coaching Course is comprehensive. It provides
coaches with a proprietary Five Module Learning Co-hort Approach, featuring The Five
Pillars of Excellence that are essentials for coaching in the specialty area of teenagers,
parents and families.
Our Five Pillars/Modules of Excellence:
1. Philosophical Foundations of Family Coaching; Understanding the
theoretical “upstream” roots of our models of transformational family coaching
with the why and how these essentials inform the application and practice of
family coaching.

2. Coaching Parents and Families; Working specifically with parents and
families individually or in groups in our trademarked exclusive coaching
programs, designed specifically for our Certified Family Coaches.
3. Advanced Ontological Perspectives and Coaching Teenagers; Coaching
teens and young adults present unique coaching challenges. Our coaching models
and programs are designed to create success for both coach and client. We
examine 75 specialty areas within this coaching niche, providing research
opportunities which assist in helping the coach create their individual coaching
“voice.”
4. Application and Business; Our coaching systems may be applied to over 15
different applications. Certified Family Coaches will have a comprehensive
business plan to deploy even while still in the course. Starting and creating
sustainability in a coaching business is a central component to our coaching
philosophy.
5. Core Competencies “tuned” to The International Coach Federation: We
have “tuned” the 11 ICF Core Competencies to the arena of coaching teenagers,
parents and families in both a 1-1 and in a group setting. This Pillar represents the
underlying bedrock of coaching skills, essential to any coaching success.

Our Training Philosophies
A philosophy is a way of thinking about the world, the universe, and about people.
A philosophy is a group of ideas, worked out by someone (or ones) that has/have
given thought to the world in which they operate:
A philosophy is a statement of beliefs that guides actions.
Certified Family Coaches trained in the Family Coaching Course deliver Coaching
Programs to parents, teens, families and youth professionals based on the philosophy that
we first need to understand what Human Beings are in order to coach them. From this
place of understanding and learning, we offer support, ideas, new perspectives, plans for
moving forward, and a host of tools and formats for helping people create fulfilling and
meaningful lives.
Above all we offer love and compassion to all we serve and come in contact with. The
foundation of professional coaching has its roots in psychology, education, consulting,
sports coaching, philosophy, friendship and spirituality. Coaching is a partnership, a
conversation and an interaction that allows the client to feel empowered to:
•
•
•
•
•
•
“Lead” themselves in all walks of life
Become more self-aware
Self-correct and self-coach
Design for themselves a new direction or path
Take new actions with confidence in and competence for the future
Create long term sustainable excellence
These are the products of coaching. When to coach and how to coach are broad questions
that the professional coach must learn to distinguish by using personal know how, skill

set, experience and wisdom. Certified Family Coaches are professional coaches who
access their own knowledge and wisdom, and appropriately bring it forth with each
client.
The language of coaching is developed within each coach with different applications
discovered over time. Coaching is not one-size-fits-all approach. It is ever evolving, as so
are the coach and the client. A successful coaching relationship requires that the coach
have a generous tool kit of assessments and skills – and become competent in the use of
them. These tools are designed for the coach to learn about who the client is, how they
are in the world, and what motivates them.
From this place, a powerful coaching relationship can take place. Academy for Family
Coach Training creates an environment whereby the coaches/staff and students are
experiencing their own successes, self-correcting as they go, and taking new actions that
will sustain stated outcomes; In effect, experiencing the positive benefits of being
coached. A good coach is also “coach-able.”
The Family Coach Training Philosophy of Coaching begins with the client having
stated outcomes that then are agreed upon by both the client and the coach.
The coach then designs a Coaching Program, based on their knowledge and insights, to
help the client reach stated outcomes. A path is set and benchmarks are acknowledged. It
is a powerful partnership that creates real, tangible and measurable outcomes for the
client.
Above all, trust, love and compassion are integral parts of the coaching partnership. Each
coach must develop their own inner capacity for “the higher road” of non-judgment and
love, even in the professional setting where action steps, tools and new paths are created.
It is the coaches’ responsibility to gather their own inner resources and strength to be able
to powerfully connect and offer their clients substantive material, courage and wisdom.
Philosophy(s) for the Personal Development of Coaches
“We are all our own first client.” We are our best client. We apply the Family Coaching
Standards to ourselves and our families first, best and last. Our personal development
philosophies are embedded into each and every activity in The Family Coaching Course,
as well as all other programs we offer.

Support for Students to Determine the ROI of a Coaching Relationship?
The ROI of a coaching relationship is two-fold.
1) Is the client meeting and exceeding their own expectations of themselves
from the work that they have created in the coaching relationship? We
encourage the client to elicit their agenda for the coaching relationship up
front in the enrollment process. The coach then serves to witness and
celebrate the unfolding insights, breakthroughs and transformation.
Mutual celebration is paramount.
2) The coach is encouraged to set their own business goals for actual income
and number of clients via metrics by way of the “design, launch and
integration phases” of their new coaching business or application.
