Introduction
Background and purpose of the survey
Since the early eighties, every two years, De Nederlandsche Bank
conducts a survey on the awareness and recognition ofthe Dutch
currency. Since the beginning of 2002, the currency of 12 European
countries, including the Netherlands, was replaced by a new
instrument of payment: the euro. Today, 2013, 17 countries have
adopted the euro.
Just as before, De Nederlandsche Bank wants to follow the
development of the knowledge and appreciation ofthe euro banknotes
among its adult users.
To reach this goal, a survey was conducted by TNS NIPO, based on the
following issues:
• Spontaneous and prompted awareness ofthe euro banknotes
• Knowledge of security features
• Knowledge ofthe picture ofthe watermark on the 5 euro and 50
euro banknote
• Appreciation of all euro banknotes
• Appreciation ofthe appearance ofthe 5 and 50 euro banknotes, in
terms of cleanliness
This survey was conducted for the first time in 2002; since then, the
survey was repeated in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013.
In 2013 a number of new questions have also been asked about how
Dutch residents perceive the following issues:
• Functions: the importance of the different functions of a euro
banknote like value recognition, user friendliness, recognition of
a falcification, and clear communication message;
• Design: the correlation between the appreciation of the euro
banknotes as method of payment and the appreciation ofthe
design ofthe euro banknotes and coins and the influence on the
knowledge about the security features;
• Falsification: the importance of the opportunity to check the
authenticity of a banknote and the perceived chance of receiving
a falsified euro banknote and to what extent and on which
locations citizens actually check a euro banknote on this;
• Influence ofthe public campaign: the knowledge ofthe publicity
campaign about the new Euro banknotes and their new security
features and the influence on the general knowledge ofthe
security features.

Target
The target group of this survey consists of Dutch citizens of 18 years
and older.
The sample size is 1,000 persons, just like in 2011 and 2009. In 2005
and 2007 the sample size was 1,500 persons. In 2002 and 2003 the
sample size was 2,000 persons.
Method
Just as in the previous studies, respondents were interviewed by CATI
(Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing). But this time, just like in
2009 and 2011, we made use of TNS NIPObase as sample base
instead of generating phone numbers.
Finding people who want to participate in research becomes
increasingly difficult. That is why we used TNS NIPObase. Through TNS
NIPObase we can make sure that every target group in the sample is
represented. TNS NIPObase contains over 200,000 respondents, whom
regularly take part in research of TNS NIPO. These people can take
part in several research methods.
The new questions have been done following the CAWI method. First
the respondents took part in a telephone interview and then the same
respondents got an online questionnaire.
To prevent sequence effects, the telephone fieldwork was carried out
on a split-run basis. Half ofthe respondents were first asked about the
knowledge and appreciation ofthe 5 euro banknote and then about the
knowledge and appreciation of the 50 euro banknote. The other half of
the respondents were first asked about the 50 euro banknote and then
about the 5 euro banknote. In this report, the results of both versions
are reported.
Weighing procedure
The results are weighed on gender, age, geographical district and
social class. In the appendix there is an overview ofthe sample
distribution and the population distribution.
Period of fieldwork
The fieldwork by telephone took place from 28 January until 4 March
2013. In this period, 1,020 persons were interviewed. The online
fieldwork took place from 12 February until 11 March 2013. 791
persons were interviewed online.

1 Awareness of euro banknotes stable
In this chapter the awareness ofthe several euro banknotes will be
discussed. First, we will look at the spontaneous awareness ofthe euro
banknotes, and then the prompted awareness of existing and nonexisting euro banknotes will be reported.
1.1
Spontaneous awareness of 5 and 500 euro
banknotes is slightly higher
The 10 euro, together with the 20 and 50 euro banknotes have the
highest spontaneous awareness. Just like previous years, high-value
euro banknotes (200 and 500 euro) are less known spontaneously
than lower-value euro banknotes. Although the spontaneous
awareness ofthe 500 euro banknote has increased significant in 2013.
Probably because it was in the Dutch news to abolish this
denomination. The same forthe 5 euro banknote.

The spontaneous awareness of low-value euro banknotes is almost the
same for men and women. However, men have a slightly higher
awareness of high-value euro banknotes (200 and 500 euro) than
women. Compared to 2 0 1 1 , women have become more aware o f t h e
200 and 500 euro banknotes. Awareness o f t h e 200 euro banknote has
decreased for men, awareness o f t h e 500 euro banknote has
increased.

The spontaneous awareness of high-value euro banknotes (100, 200
euro) declines with age. The 500 euro banknote is better known
among people between the age of 18 and 34 than among people of an
older age.

People dealing with cash money because of their occupation are more
familiar with 100, 200 and 500 euro banknotes.
People who belong to a higher social class are more aware o f t h e
highest value euro banknote (500 euro).
The awareness o f t h e 500 euro banknotes is the highest in the south
of the Netherlands.

A little more than two out of five people spontaneously mention all
seven euro banknotes ( 4 2 % ) .
The average number of spontaneously known (real existing) banknotes
is slightly higher than in 2011 (6 in 2 0 1 1 , 6,1 in 2013).

Just like in previous years, youngsters spontaneously recall more
banknotes than older people, and men can name more than women.
Some people think there are euro banknotes in values that do not
exist:
• From 2002 to 2005 the number of people who thought there was a
250 euro banknote increased. In 2007, the number of people
having this wrong idea has declined. In 2009 the number of people
fell back to the level of 2005 ( 1 4 % ) . But in 2011 the number of
people who mentioned a 250 euro banknote was back at the level
of 2007 (11%) again. In 2013 this percentage stays the same
(11%).
• For the 1000 euro banknote the 'spontaneous awareness' increased
from 2 % in 2002, 3% in 2003, to 1 0 % in 2009. With 1 1 % in 2011
it has remained fairly stable when compared to 2009. In 2013 this
percentage decreases to 6%.

1.2 Penetration of banknotes is also stable
Just like in previous years, consumers use the lower-value banknotes
more often than the high-value euro banknotes.

The respondents were asked whether or not they held any o f t h e highvalue banknotes in their hands last year. It turns out that the 100 euro
banknote was held by half o f t h e people ( 4 8 % ) last year, the 200 euro
banknote by less than one out of five ( 1 6 % ) and the 500 euro
banknote by less than one out of ten ( 7 % ) . For the 100 and 500 euro
banknotes the percentages are almost the same as in 2009. But for
the 200 euro banknote the number of people who actually held it in
their hands declined from 2 0 % in 2011 to 1 6 % in 2013.
Older people (55 + ) have held a 100 euro banknote in their hands less
often than people younger than 55.

2 Security features: knowledge and
confidence
Respondents were queried about their knowledge ofthe security
features that can be used to check the authenticity of a banknote.
Then, respondents were asked about their knowledge ofthe image of
the watermark on the 5 and 50 euro banknotes. Since 2005, some
additional questions have been asked about the confidence in and
security ofthe euro banknotes.
2.1
Spontaneous awareness of security features
increases
There are about 15 security features that are mentioned
spontaneously. Out of these 15 security features, the watermark
remains the best known security feature (79%), followed by the silvercoloured, shining foil stripe (41%). The security thread and hologram
follow at a distance.
Compared to 2011 the awareness for both the watermark as the
silver-coloured, shining foil stripe are increased. This year it has
reached the highest level ever! Also the familiarity with the feel ofthe
print and the features visible under infrared light are increased.
Compared to 2011 less people say now that they do not know any
security features; 1 1 % in 2011 versus 6% in 2013.
The kind of paper is mentioned in 2013 more often compared to 2011.

The average number of security features that are mentioned this year
is 2.6. This average is slightly higher compared to 2011 (2.3).
Just like in previous years, men can mention more security features
than women (2.5 against 2.3). Men mention more significantly more
often security thread and hologram than women.
Looking at the different age groups, knowledge of security features
decreases with age. People in the age group 18-35 know 3 features on
average, while people in the age group 55+ know 2 features. The

youngsters more often mention watermark, silver-coloured stripe/seal,

often say that they do not know any security features.

Confidence in the authenticity of euro banknotes
is good
The confidence in the authenticity of euro banknotes has been
measured by three questions:
- Confidence in genuineness of euro banknotes in general
- Confidence in genuineness of euro banknotes, when receiving
euro banknotes from someone else
- Confidence in protection against imitation and falsification
The confidence in protection against imitation and falsification
decreases compared to 2 0 1 1 .

Again men have a slightly higher confidence in the authenticity of euro
banknotes than women; this applies to all both aspects.
The younger age group (34-) has more confidence in the authenticity
of euro banknotes and in the protection of euro banknotes against
falsification than others.
The higher the social class the more confidence people have in the
authenticity of euro banknotes and in the protection of euro banknotes
against falsification.
People dealing with cash money because of their occupation have less
confidence in the authenticity of euro banknotes and in the protection
of euro banknotes against falsification.

3 Aesthetic appreciation of euro banknotes
3.1 5 euro banknote remains least appreciated
The 5 euro banknote remains the least appreciated banknote while
high-value euro banknotes (100, 200 and 500) are appreciated the
most, together with the 20 euro banknote.
The (relatively) low appreciation ofthe 100, 200 and 500 euro
banknotes is partly due to the unfamiliarity with these banknotes. Just
above two out of ten respondents cannot judge the 100 euro banknote
(22%). For the 200 euro banknote and the 500 euro banknote, these
percentages are 47% and 54%. These percentages are almost the
same as in 2009 and 2011, except forthe 100 euro banknote, the
percentage of respondents who cannot judge decreases from 3 1 % to
22%.

In general, the people in age group 55+ more often do not have an
opinion about euro banknotes. This is especially true for the 100, 200
and 500 euro banknotes (with which they are less familiar).
When it comes to the high-value banknotes (200 and 500 euro), it
seems that women more often than men do not have an opinion about
the appreciation.

5 The additional online research on
functions of the euro banknotes
This year, a number of new questions have also been asked about how
Dutch residents perceive the following issues:
• Functions: the importance of the different functions of a euro
banknote such as value recognition, user-friendliness,
recognition ofa falsification, and clear communication message;
• Design: the correlation between the appreciation of euro
banknotes as a method of payment and the appreciation ofthe
design of euro banknotes and coins as well as the influence on
the knowledge about the security features;
• Falsification: the importance of the opportunity to check the
authenticity of a banknote and the perceived chance of receiving
a counterfeit euro banknote. To what extent and where do
citizens actually check a euro banknote?;
• Influence ofthe public campaign: the knowledge ofthe publicity
campaign about the new euro banknotes and their new security
features and the influence on the general knowledge ofthe
security features.
5.1 Functions of the euro banknotes
This chapter examines the importance of different functions of the euro
banknotes and how Dutch residents rate these functions. The impact
of these functions on the overall rating ofthe euro is also looked into.
5.1.1
Value recognition the most important and appreciated
function of the euro banknote
Dutch respondents were asked which ofthe following four functions of
euro banknotes are most important to them and how they would rate
these functions on a score from 1 to 10.
The ability to recognize the value of different euro banknotes
The ability to see if a euro banknote is falsified
The extent to which euro banknotes are user-friendly
The extent to which the message and the design/image is
communicated clearly

When asked directly the Dutch residents perceive value recognition as
the most important function o f a banknote. Seven out o f t e n
respondents find this the most important function out o f t h e four
functions mentioned previously. On average this function score is 1.4,
with 1 being the most important function and 4 being the least
important function. The ability to recognize value on existing euro
banknotes is rated relatively high (7.7). This function has the second
highest impact (correlation) on the overall rating o f t h e euro.
The ability to recognize a counterfeit banknote is the next most
important function, but this function o f t h e euro banknote is rated
negatively by the Dutch residents with a 5.7. User-friendliness is in
third place and is rated with a 7 . 1 . Communicating a clear message is
of least importance and is also rated negatively with a 5.2.
The ranking of these functions does not differentiate according to age,

Recognition of falsification lowest impact on overall
appreciation of banknotes
By making use of correlation analysis we can conclude that the userfriendliness of the euro banknote is highly correlated with the overall
appreciation ofthe euro.
Value recognition has a lower level of impact on the overall
appreciation ofthe euro. The ability to recognize a falsification has the
lowest impact on the appreciation of the euro. The impact of the clarity
ofthe communication message is also relatively low.

5.2 I m p a c t of design
This chapter examines the influence of design on how the euro is rated
by the respondents and on the respondents' knowledge of security
features. The overall rating given by the respondents to the design of
euro banknotes and coins is also discussed.
5.2.1
Influence of design of the euro on overall rating of the
euro relatively low
By making use of correlation analysis we can conclude that the design
o f t h e banknotes has a relatively higher impact on the overall rating of
the euro as method of payment compared to the design o f t h e euro

The respondents rate the design of coins (6.7) slightly more highly
than the design of euro notes (6.6).
The design of euro banknotes and coins has a more significant impact
on the overall rating of the euro compared to the impact the four

5.2.2
A clear communication message is important for
improvement of euro banknote design
In the figure below, the impact of the four different functions of the
euro on the overall rating ofthe design the design of euro banknotes,
is displayed. The most important finding is that the extent to which the
message and the design/image communicates clearly has a relatively
high impact on the rating given by the respondents to the design of
euro banknotes. The respondents are not satisfied with the clarity of
the communication message on euro banknotes: this function receives
a rating of 5.2. In order to improve the design of euro banknotes it is
important to pay attention to the clarity of the communication
message.
The user-friendliness ofthe euro banknotes has the most significant
impact on the rating the respondents give the design. Those who are
satisfied with the euro's user-friendliness also tend to be satisfied with
its design.
The outcome of the correlation analysis makes it clear that the ability
to recognize falsifications has a relatively low impact on the rating the
respondents give the design. This shows that, to a large extent, this
function is seen as a separate function ofthe euro banknotes apart
from the design.

5.2.3
Dutch residents give the euro design a moderate rating
Overall, the design of euro banknotes is rated with a 6.6. The rating
the respondents give the design of euro coins is slightly higher (6.7).
No significant differences are seen between gender, age, demographic
region or social class. Those who are dissatisfied with the design ofthe
euro in general (rating 1-5) also tend to be dissatisfied with the euro
in general and as a result rate the euro in general with a 5.3 compared
to a 6.6 on average.
As seen below those who are not satisfied with the design of euro
banknotes tend to have an overall negative opinion about different
aspects ofthe euro. On the other hand, those who rate the design of
euro banknotes with an 8 or higher tend to be more satisfied with the
euro in general.
We have already seen that the clarity ofthe communication message
has a relatively high impact on the satisfaction ofthe respondents with
the design of euro banknotes. It is striking to find that those who give
the design of euro banknotes a low rating (rating 1-5) are not satisfied
at all with the clarity ofthe communication message on the banknotes:
this function is rated with a 3.7. This confirms the impact the clarity of
the communication message on banknotes has on the satisfaction with
the design.

Satisfaction with euro design does not have impact on
knowledge security features
No connection has been found between satisfaction with the euro
banknote design and the knowledge the respondents have when it
comes to the security features on banknotes. On average 2.6 security
features are mentioned. No significant differences are seen when
looking at different levels of satisfaction with regard to the design of
euro banknotes. The only striking fact is that the silver-coloured foil
and the hologram are mentioned more often by those who are
dissatisfied with the design of euro banknotes (rating 1-5).

The respondents who are satisfied (rating 8-10) with the euro as a
method of payment are also more satisfied with the design of both
euro coins and euro banknotes compared to those who are less
satisfied about the euro as a method of payment.
When individuals are dissatisfied about the euro as a method of

On average, the chances of having received a counterfeit banknote in
the past five years are estimated at 15%. In the past five years 6% of
the Dutch residents received an actual counterfeit euro banknote. One
third (34%) have carried out an authenticity check on a euro banknote
in the past five years (at least once).
In the next chapters these results will be discussed more extensively.

6% ofthe Dutch residents have received a falsified euro banknote in
the past five years. 40% of them discovered the euro banknote was
counterfeit because of its different appearance (structure, no
watermark, different feel and so on). 30% found out when paying
and/or when an authenticity check was carried out in a shop. 6%
discovered it because someone told them.

counterfeit euro banknote was related to work: they handled it at work
or gave it to their manager. Just 5% handed the falsified banknote
over to the police, and 2% handed it over to De Nederlandsche Bank.

More than half of the Dutch residents have not checked the
authenticity of a banknote in the past five years and have never
considered it. 13% have considered carrying out a check in the past
five years, but have not actually done it. 5% have have checked a
banknote once, 13% have done an authenticity check twice to ten
times. 18% have checked for authenticity more than ten times in the
past five years.
Those in the age group 18-44 answered significantly more often they
had checked more than ten times. Additionally, those in the age group
18-34 mentioned significantly less often they have not checked for
authenticity in the past five years, nor did they consider it. On the
other hand, a significantly higher percentage of respondents aged 45
and over have not checked for authenticity and have not considered
checking in the past five years.
Respondents in the age groups 45-54 and 65 and over mentioned
significantly less often they checked for authenticity more than ten
times in the past five years compared to the average.
A significantly higher percentage of respondents from social class D
(lowest) have not checked a banknote for authenticity in the past five
years and have not considered it.
It is also striking to see that a significantly higher percentage of
respondents in the three main cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The
Hague) have not checked a banknote for authenticity in the past five
years and have not considered it.
Those who perceive the chance of having received a falsified banknote
in the past five years higher than 3 1 % , mention significantly more
often than average that they have done an authenticity check more
than ten times in the past five years. On the other hand, the
respondents who do not perceive any chances of having received a

6 Conclusions
6.1 Conclusions telephone trendresearch
T h e a w a r e n e s s of euro banknotes slightly i n c r e a s e s
The average number of spontaneously known (real existing) banknotes
is slightly higher than in 2011 in 2013. Just like in previous years and
not surprisingly, low-value euro banknotes are still better known than
high-value euro banknotes. The 10 euro banknote is best known.
More than 9 6 % o f t h e respondents spontaneously mention low-value
euro banknotes (5, 10, 20, 50). The spontaneous awareness o f t h e 5
euro banknote has increased this year. As might be expected, highvalue euro banknotes are mentioned significantly less often, which
means that the awareness of the 200 and 500 euro banknotes stays
behind. About six out o f t e n respondents are spontaneously aware of
these banknotes. The awareness of the 500 euro banknote has
increased significantly this year. Probably because it was in the news
several times. This banknote is much better known among men than
women. The 200 and 500 banknotes are better known among the
younger people (18-34). Not surprisingly because just like in previous
years, youngsters spontaneously recall more banknotes than older
people, and men can name more than women.
T h e average s p o n t a n e o u s a w a r e n e s s of existing banknotes is
slightly higher
An average of 6,1 banknotes is mentioned spontaneously in 2013 (6 in
2009).
C o m p a r e d to 2011 the s p o n t a n e o u s a w a r e n e s s of security
f e a t u r e s h a s increased and r e a c h e d its highest level e v e r !
The watermark remains the most familiar security feature. Compared
to 2009 the familiarity with a couple of security features has
increased: 'shining foil stripe', 'different colours fluorescent fibres in
the paper' and Mnk brightens under an ultraviolet lamp on the front
side'. The percentage of people who do not know any security features
has decreased compared to 2 0 1 1 .
A majority h a s no clue about the image of the w a t e r m a r k
Most consumers do not know what is depicted in the watermarks of
the 5 and the 50 euro banknotes. This was also the case in previous
years.
Almost nine out o f t e n respondents are not aware o f t h e picture o f t h e
watermark on both the 5 and 50 euro banknotes. This majority has
slightly declined for both the 5 and 50 euro banknote compared to
2011.

Confidence in the authenticity of euro b a n k n o t e s is good
The confidence in the authenticity of euro banknotes in general has
grown over time. The confidence in protection against imitation and
falsification has slightly decreased compared to 2 0 1 1 .
Appreciation of 5 euro banknote s t a y s behind
High-value euro banknotes are appreciated the most, the appreciation
o f t h e 5 euro banknote stays behind. The 5 euro banknote is
considered to be more beautiful than in 2 0 1 1 . After 10 years in
circulation people tend to be more indifferent to the note designs
(appreciation). Less people find the notes ugly. The appreciation o f t h e
appearance of other euro banknotes is stable compared to 2 0 1 1 .
50 euro banknote still most popular
When asked specifically for a favourite, the public prefers the 50 euro
banknote the most, just like in 2 0 1 1 . The 20 euro banknote is the
second most popular banknote. The popularity o f t h e 50 euro banknote
decreases in 2013, the popularity o f t h e 20 euro banknote increases.
T h e 50 euro banknote is considered to be c l e a n e r than the 5
euro banknote
The majority consider the euro banknotes in general as clean. The 50
euro banknote is significantly more often considered cleaner than the 5
euro banknote, as one might expect due to the circulation rate. The
opinion on the cleanliness o f t h e 5 euro banknote has increased this
year, but has declined in the years before. The opinion on the
cleanliness o f t h e 50 euro banknote has remained stable.
T h e last s e r i e s of guilder b a n k n o t e s a r e still far more popular
than the s e r i e s of euro b a n k n o t e s
Just as in previous years, the last series of guilder banknotes are more
popular than the euro banknotes.
Background v a r i a b l e s affect knowledge and appreciation of
euro b a n k n o t e s the s a m e a s before
In general, it still seems that the knowledge of euro banknotes is
highest among men, youngsters (18-34), people belonging to the
highest social class and people who deal with money for their
occupation.

6.2 Conclusions for the additional research
I m p o r t a n c e and appreciation of the different functions of a
euro banknote
When asked directly the most important and appreciated function of a
euro banknote is the ability to recognize the value of different euro
banknotes. The recognition o f a falsification and the user-friendliness
are, according to the Dutch residents, the next important functions.
The last function is appreciated rather well and is rated with a 7 . 1 . The
recognition o f a falsification is much less appreciated and is rated with
a 5.7.
Despite this low appreciation and the explicit high importance o f t h e
ability to see whether a euro banknote is falsified this function has a
low impact on the overall appreciation of the euro as method of
payment.
Of course the attitudes of Dutch residents towards the participation of
the Netherlands in the euro play a role in the way they rate the
different functions of euro banknotes. Residents with a negative
attitude rate all functions o f t h e euro more negatively.
I m p a c t of design on the overall rating of the euro ( b a n k n o t e s )
According to this study the influence of the design o f t h e banknotes
and - coins is rather high on the overall rating o f t h e euro. Not
surprisingly the influence of the design of the euro notes is higher than
the design of the euro coins.
At this moment Dutch residents rate the design o f t h e euro banknotes
with moderate satisfactory mark.
To improve the design o f t h e euro banknotes and the overall rating of
the euro (banknotes) it is very important that the design and/or visual
o f a banknote communicate a clear message!
However improvement o f t h e design will not lead to a higher
knowledge o f t h e security features. No correlation has been found
between the satisfaction with the euro banknotes design and the
extent of knowledge o f t h e security features.
Perceived risk of receiving a falsified banknote and p a s t / f u t u r e
behaviour
The chance of having received a falsified banknote in the past five
years is estimated at 15% on the average. The market is perceived as
the location with the highest chance of receiving a falsified banknote.
The ATM is considered as the safest location.
Only 6 % has experience with a falsified banknote. Two fifth o f t h e
residents discovered this because o f t h e different appearance
(structure, no watermark, different feel and so on) o f t h e banknote.
Euro banknotes | G5567| © TNS NIPO | 09 April 2013 |
55
One third found out when paying and/or when an authenticity check
carried out in a shop. Most ofthe residents (29%) brought the falsified
banknote to their own bank. One fifth ofthe residents spent the
falsified banknote again!
More than one third of the residents say they have done an
authenticity check in the past five years, mostly at a market. Most of
the residents did this out if curiosity or habit and spotted something
was wrong with the feel ofthe paper and because ofa dirty, pale,
wrinkled or damaged banknote.
More than half of the Dutch residents never checked a euro banknote
in the past five years.

Appendix 2 Appreciation, dichotomic method
Because many respondents do not have an opinion, it makes more
sense to exclude these answers. In the past, De Nederlandsche Bank
applied the following dichotomic method: the results are divided into
two categories 'beautiful' (very beautiful and rather beautiful) and
'ugly' (very ugly and rather ugly). The results of respondents with no
opinion are ignored while the number of respondents who judge the
banknotes as 'not beautiful, not ugly' are divided into two categories.
One half is added to the 'beautiful' category, the other half is added to
the 'ugly' category.
In general, all banknotes are appreciated more or less the same.
However, the 5 euro banknote turns out to be least likeable. 67% find
the series of euro banknotes beautiful.
