Bulletin 19 April 2015 - All Hallows, Five Dock
Celebrating FAITH, LIFE and LOVE in COMMUNITY. 19th April 2015 - Year B THIRD SUNDAY of EASTER ALL HALLOWS’ PARISH CHURCH 2 Halley Street FIVE DOCK 2046 Parish Priest: Fr Greg McGregor Associate Pastors: Fr Salas Muttathukattil MSFS Secretary: Elena Di Perna Presbytery: Monday: Closed Tues - Fri: 8.30am - 3.30pm Closed for lunch 12.30-1.30 pm Phone: 9713 7960 Fax: 9713 5172 Email: [email protected] Dear Parishioners, 1. What Are We Supposed To Do? Once, in perplexity, people asked Jesus, “What are we supposed to do?” (John 6:28). The Second Reading raises this question for us too. The Second Reading says that if you don’t keep God’s commandments but say that you know the Lord, you are a liar. Being a liar is bad enough. But the Second Reading also says that if you don’t keep the Lord’s commandments, you don’t know the Lord. That is the worst, isn’t it? Especially because the test for whether or not you know the Lord is not whether you have fervent prayer or sweet religious experience. No, the test is just whether you keep the Lord’s commandments. That is why you lie if you don’t keep the Lord’s commandments, but still try to tell yourself and others that you know the Lord. Web: www.allhallows.org.au In another passage, this same Epistle (1 John 1:6-8) claims that if All Hallows’ Parish School you say you have no sin, you are a liar then too. Principal: Mrs Helen Elliott Phone: 9713 4469 Fax: 9712 5184 Email: [email protected] Web: www.ahpsfivedock.catholic.edu.au And now we have a real puzzle, don’t we? To avoid the sin of lying, you have to confess that you do sinful things. But then you are confessing that you aren’t keeping the Lord’s commandments, aren’t you? And in that case, you liar, you don’t know the Lord. Well, then, what are we supposed to do? Sacramental Life Eucharist: Saturday - 9.00am & 5.30pm Vigil Sunday - 8.30am Sunday - 10am Children’s Liturgy Sunday - 6.00pm Youth Mass Monday - 9.00am Tues - Wed - 8.00am Thurs - Fri - 9.00am Lauds (morning prayer) is prayed 20 minutes before morning mass daily. All Welcome. Reconciliation: Saturday 9.30 - 10am & 4.45 - 5.15pm Anointing: First Friday of the month at 9am mass. (except January). The answer is in what Jesus told the people when they asked Jesus that very question. Jesus said, “Believe on the one whom God has sent.” (John 6:29) Notice that this is a command! So we can tell the truth: we are sinful. But it doesn’t follow that we don’t keep God’s commandments. If we believe that Jesus is the Savior, sent by God to save us from our sins, then, sinful as we are, we are in fact keeping the Lord’s command. And if we keep his command, then it is also true that we know him. We know him as the Christ, sent by God to save us from our sins. It can be true then both that we are sinful and that we keep the commandment of the Lord if we believe that he will save us from our sinfulness. So this is what we are supposed to do: know him. Sick Calls: Any time - day/night. Funeral Masses: In co-operation with Funeral Directors. Exposition: Third Thursday of every month after Mass. 2. Project Compassion Thank you for the generous support of the Caritas Appeal this year. If you still have a collection box please return at your earliest convenience. 3. First Communion Forms for children who are to receive the sacrament of First Communion this year will be available at Mass for the next two weekends. Please note sacraments are parish based, please forward enquiries to the parish office. 4. World Day of Prayer Next Sunday is the Fourth Sunday of Easter. In 1963 Pope Paul VI designated this day as World Day of Prayer for Vocations also known as Good Shepherd Sunday. On this annual worldwide event, the Church invites you to ask for God’s blessings that we may be strengthened in our Christian vocation and to pray especially for those God is calling to the Priesthood and Religious Life. 5. Prayer Groups Do you think you would like to give more time to the Lord? Would you consider joining a parish prayer group based on scripture and prayer of the heart, meeting once a fortnight for an hour to an hour and a half? If you would, please fill in your name and details on the sheet in the Gathering Space and Sister Ruth will contact you about the first meeting. God Bless Fr.
