Internship Requirements
General Overview
The purpose of the internship and experiential/integrating learning experience is to enable King College –
School of Business students to gain valuable work experience within the business environment. Experiential
learning is an educational plan that integrates classroom study with practical work experience. It is intended to
contribute meaningfully to your over-all preparation by providing an opportunity for the practical application of
skills and concepts learned in coursework. An internship is much more than a job; it is a course which offers
you an individualized educational experience through the study of a structured employment situation.
Course Outcomes
The Internship experience will offer the student the opportunity to:





Obtain practical work experience within the general business environment.
Gain a more complete understanding of various business operations.
Achieve a better understanding of problem solving related to daily business operation(s).
Develop a greater understanding of career options while more clearly defining personal career goals.
Develop and refine oral and written communication skills.
What’s Required?
The semester prior to the internship the student must:
 Contact Finley Green, King College – Office of Career Services to declare their intent to enroll in
the BUSA 3800 Internship course the next semester. Student’s need to schedule an appointment to
explore internship opportunities as early in the semester as possible.
 Submit a resume in electronic format to Finley Green
 Maintain contact with the Office of Career Development as changes and/or opportunities arise.
The semester of the internship:
 ....................................................... Students must have taken or be enrolled in BUSA 3740:
Professional Development Strategies (1 s.h.)
 Register for BUSA 3800 - Internship (2 s.h.) and be assigned a Faculty Advisor appropriate to the
theme of their internship (i.e., Management, Marketing, etc.).
 Complete the Internship Learning Contract with their Faculty Advisor and submit to the Office of
Career Development.
Course Requirements/Assignments
To be successful in completing the internship experience each student must:
 Complete at least 100 hours over the course of the internship (50 hours per credit hour).
 Maintain an electronic journal of daily progress reflecting on daily activities, hours worked and
related internship experiences.
 Communicate with their Faculty Advisor during their internship as needed via e-mail or Blackboard.
 Complete a Final Report1 toward the end of their internship experience.
 Submit all required paperwork (i.e., checklists, progress reports, surveys, etc.) to the Office of
Career Development at the end of their internship.
 Complete an exit interview with their Faculty Advisor.
1: The Final Report
The Final Report is due to the student’s Faculty Advisor and the Office of Career Development on the due date
established in the student’s Internship Learning Contract.
The Final Report shall consist of six (6) sections:






Section 1: Company Description1
Section 2: Job Description2
Section 3: Prescriptive Description of Student Expectations3
Section 4: Reflective Description of Student Experience4
Section 5: A Personal Assessment5 of the student’s work performance.
Section 6: Appendices: Copy of Student Journal and other supporting materials, etc.
The Final Report should be presented as a professional business report. The following guidelines
apply to the Final Report:



All pages must be computer generated and submitted on 8.5 x 11" paper.
All pages should adhere to APA formatting.
All pages should be consecutively numbered and the report should contain a title page and a
table of contents.
 All sections and sub-sections should be clearly marked with headings as appropriate.
 All supporting material(s) should be placed in an appendix section. These appendices must
be clearly labeled and the information in each appendix should be referenced within the body
of the final report.
 A bibliography should be included listing all information sources consulted, including
individuals with whom you have spoken or interviewed.
Notes
1: The Company Description. Provide a brief description, one to two page(s) of the company for which you are working. This should
include the nature of the products and services offered and a profile of the customers who use them. You may also provide brochures
or collateral material that further describes the company.
2: The Job Description. Provide a copy of your job description or draft a job description for the position that you were assigned
during your internship.
3: Prescriptive Description of Student Expectations. Provide a brief one to two page description of what you expect to learn or gain
from the internship experience.




you have learned and gained from completing this internship.

Have your career goals been reinforced or have you decided to alter your original goals (a new career path)?
What new skills have you acquired and what present skills have been reinforced? Consider the full range of skills: leadership;
technical; communication; artistic; social; political and others?
What specific skills or knowledge have you acquired that will improve your interpersonal skills? How will these improve
your ability to be a successful manager?
5: A Personal Assessment. Provide a one to two page summary of your work performance based on personal, peer and supervisor
feedback.





What are some goals that you are going to establish for yourself based on peer and supervisor feedback?
