MULTIDISCIPLINARY MASTERCLASS
PRACTICAL MANAGEMENT OF
BREATHLESSNESS

This exciting one day masterclass will focus on the pioneering practices and experiences of the
Cambridge Breathlessness Intervention Service. This interdisciplinary service is based on the holistic
Breathing, Thinking, Functioning Model.
The programme will be led by Dr Sara Booth, a prominent clinician and researcher of international
renown. Dr Booth will share her expertise in the clinical management of breathlessness and her
experience in novel service development, design and evaluation.
Learning will be facilitated through a series of lectures and practical hands on workshops.
Topics will include:
 Assessment and management of breathlessness in malignant and non-malignant disease.
 Drug treatments and current evidence re opioids and benzodiazepines.
 Oxygen therapy indicators and limitations.
 Practical tools to support patients:

Teaching breathing and anxiety management techniques.

Pacing, planning and prioritizing their activities.

Mindfulness techniques - skills to support the psychological wellbeing and resilience of
patients and families.
 Service development hints and tips - UK and Irish perspectives.
Who Should Attend: Doctors, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals, educators and
managers working in all healthcare settings.
Key Speaker Dr Sara Booth has a longstanding interest in the clinical
management and research of breathlessness which was stimulated during her
work at St Christopher’s Hospice in London. She has worked as a Macmiillan
Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Clinical Director of Palliative Care at
Addenbrooke's Hospital Cambridge and is currently an Associate Lecturer at
University of Cambridge and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Department of Palliative
Care and Policy at King’s College, London. Dr Booth developed the Cambridge
Breathlessness Intervention Service (CBIS) at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and an
associated programme of research collaborating with colleagues across the UK
and internationally. She supports research in breathlessness and ways to improve
resilience in those living with difficult symptoms and has co-authored and coedited books and scientific papers on breathlessness and palliative care.

Speakers in order of appearance
Professor Philip J Larkin is Associate Professor of Clinical Nursing (Palliative Care) and is
Director of Clinical Academic Partnership UCD School of Nursing & Midwifery and Health
Systems & Our Lady’s Hospice and Care Services in Dublin. He is the Chair of the Irish
Association of Palliative Care. He is chair of the All Ireland Institute of Hospice & Palliative
Care (AIIHPC) and is the incoming President of the European Association of Palliative Care
(EAPC) 2015.
Ms Catherine Moffatt qualified as a Physiotherapist in 2000 and previously led the inpatient Medical Physiotherapy team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. She joined the Cambridge
Breathlessness Intervention Service in 2009. Catherine teaches breathlessness selfmanagement strategies to patients with intractable breathlessness irrespective of diagnosis.
She has a keen interest in dysfunctional breathing and is the current Chair of the Buteyko
Breathing Association. She has co-authored articles and clinical guides in nonpharmacological management of breathlessness.
Mr David Shannon BA, MSc Counselling Psychology (Trinity College Dublin), Reg Psychol.
Ps SI., C Psychol., Senior Psychologist at Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services, Dublin. Centre
for Mindfulness Research and Practice (Bangor University) Core Trainer and Master’s
Programme Tutor. Special interest in psychology in palliative care and applications of
mindfulness to end-of-life for staff, patients and family members.
Ms Catriona Power is a senior occupational therapist in Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services.
She works in palliative care and as a practice tutor with Trinity College Dublin and OLH&CS.
She has worked within the multidisciplinary breathlessness management programme for
the past three years. Catriona has a special interest in Palliative Care and is Research and
Development Officer for the Occupational Therapy National Advisory Group for Palliative
Care and Oncology. She graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 2007 and completed her
Masters in Evidence Based Therapy Practice in University College Cork in 2014. Her thesis
focused on an occupational approach in palliative rehabilitation.
Ms Deirdre Moran is a senior occupational therapist in Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services.
She works in the palliative care unit and has worked in the Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal
Disease and Care of the Older Person units. She graduated from Trinity College Dublin in
2009 and is currently completing a Masters in Evidence Based Therapy Practice with
University College Cork. She has completed research exploring meaningful engagement for
long-term care residents. She is Education Officer for the Occupational Therapy National
Palliative Care and Oncology Advisory Group.
Ms Geraldine Tracey is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Palliative Care, Our Lady's
Hospice & Care Services. She holds a Higher Diploma in Palliative Care and an MSc in
Nursing. Ger is an Adjunct Lecturer in University College Dublin. She has 18 years
experience in specialist palliative care, and has gained extensive experience in various
settings including specialist palliative in-patient care, community specialist palliative
care, education, audit, policy, and as Day Hospice Manager. Her role is primarily clinical in
nature but also involves education and research components.
