Medicine and Modernity in America
This lecture/seminar course will offer you a cultural, intellectual, and
social history of American medicine from the eighteenth century through
today with an emphasis on the twentieth century. We will focus on the
relationship between science, medicine, and philosophy over time,
especially regarding both animal and human experimentation; the
interconnections between medicine and culture historically; the
relationship between doctor and patient amidst increasing
professionalization and demands for empathy in caring; the development
of American therapeutic cultures, especially the history of psychiatry;
institutional frameworks of American medicine, especially the rise of the
hospital; as well as, of course, the experiences and representations of
illness, death, diseases, insanity, suffering and curing over time. The
readings will combine cultural and intellectual history with some
theoretical works, along with medical primary sources. (A)

Canada-US Relations Since 1776
Canadians and Americans have long trumpeted that they share the world’s
longest undefeated border. But while the two countries have not fought
since 1814, relations between the vastly disparate nations, as exemplified
by the recent Canadian decision not to support the American invasion of
Iraq, have not always been harmonious. This course will examine the myth
of the undefended border, Manifest Destiny and continental expansion,
free Trade and economic integration, military alliances and world wars,
NORAD, the Autopact, the Vietnam conflict, and cultural imperialism.

Were there ever "Separate Spheres"? Victorian Women (and
Men), Domesticity, and Public Life.
The “Separate Spheres” paradigm has long been used to explain the
place of women, especially middle class ones, in late eighteenth- and
nineteenth century Western society. Women would have been
confined to a “domestic sphere” and the “public” one of economic and
political activities would have been the preserve of men. Over the past
twenty years however, historians have challenged this vision of a
world segregated on the basis of sex. Women’s’ public activities, and
men’s domestic involvement, appear to have been greatly overlooked.
The equation of the “private” with the “domestic” has also been
challenged. The seminar will examine the transgressing of traditional
gender boundaries by men and women in eighteenth and nineteenth
century Canada, United States, France and Britain, with occasional
forays in other countries, as well as the historians’ debate over the
definitions of “public” and “private”.

The English East India Company
These seminars consider the emergence, expansion and eclipse of the
English East India Company. As such they cover in detail the period
from 1600 until the later 1850s and explores the crucial role the East
India Company played in Britain’s rise from a minor European state to
a global imperial power. The Company’s history offers a means of
examining the connections between pre- and post-industrial worlds,
the Atlantic and Asian worlds of the 17th-19th centuries, and the
movement and interaction of peoples and products that characterized
the whole dynamic of British expansionism. Thus, the history of the
East India Company casts light upon the political, social, cultural,
military and mercantile nature of the ‘British’ state and its empire in
this period and those themes too will be discussed in this seminar
course.

dissertation.

American Thought and Culture Since 1865: The Modern to the
Postmodern
This course will introduce you to some of the major trends in
American thought and culture during the post-Civil War period. In
addition to exploring the works of canonical American thinkers and
artists, we will focus on close readings of an array of cultural and
intellectual expression from diverse primary sources, including
photography, film, television, advertisements, music, and social
science sources, among others. We will wed these to broader historical
contexts, including social relations and political history, and explore
why it is that certain beliefs, forms of cultural expression, and
representation took hold at particular moments in American history.
Some of our central movements and themes include social realism;
Darwinism; pragmatism; progressivism; early expressions of
American modernity, especially the development of American film
and modern art; American liberalism and responses to ideologies,
especially communism and fascism; trauma cultures; authenticity and
existentialism; American radicalism and conservatism; consumer
culture; and postmodernism and its offshoots. (A)

The Making of the Digital Age in Canada and beyond
In recent decades, digital technologies have increasingly enabled,
accelerated and then influenced new thinking and behaviour across societies
around the world. Canada has played a key role including the pioneering
work of Harold Innis and Marshal McLuhan, institutions like the National
Research Council and businesses like Research-in-Motion (Blackberry) and

to study such developments, this course will include the learning of diverse
digital tools used in historical research (as well as in businesses,

sur des aspects clés de l’expérience ouvrière : conditions de travail et de vie;
