Eastern Europe 2015
Forty four students and six staff departed at lunchtime on the last day of term, Friday
27th March 2015, for an overnight journey on a very luxurious coach for our ten day
history tour of Eastern Europe. First stop was Berlin where we arrived on Saturday
morning for our two night stay. We immediately embarked on a walking tour of Berlin,
taking in landmarks that included the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag Building and the
Memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe. After a visit to the Checkpoint Charlie
Museum there was a little free time to take in the atmosphere of Berlin. On Sunday,
students went on a coach tour of Berlin with a visit to the Olympic Stadium, where
students sang in the arena and climbed the Bell Tower, as well as visits to the
Topography of Terror, Bebelplaz (site of the book burning) and the TV Tower. A
competitive evening of bowling followed and that was just by the staff!
On Monday, we all departed Berlin for our onward journey to Krakow, and after our evening meal we took a
leisurely walk around the beautiful old town. On a wet and grey Tuesday morning we departed for a half day
excursion to Auschwitz Concentration Camp. The three and a half hour tour took us to Auschwitz Main Camp
One, Auschwitz-Birkenau, prisoner barracks and ruins of the gas chamber and crematoria. In the afternoon we
visited the Galicia Museum in Krakow where students had a chance to hear the experiences of a concentration
camp survivor, a very thought provoking experience for all. It was nice to end the day on a lighter note at the
Hard Rock Café where we celebrated with Ellie on her birthday.
The following day we began our journey to Budapest.Unfortunately the bus would not start and the pupils got
off the coach to try to push start it; nobody had remembered the date ,1st April!! Then we travelled through the
snow covered mountain scenery of Slovakia. We arrived in Budapest and went to a beautiful restaurant where
we were able to celebrate Ellis’s birthday with live local music and impromptu
dancing by students; Mr Connelly’s dancing was something never to be forgotten!
In Budapest we met our guide for our morning tour. She asked to be called
“Little Bear” and was very informative and clearly enjoyed the company of our
students, even writing postcards for them in exchange for a chocolate. That
afternoon we visited the House of Terror Museum before we returned to our
favourite restaurant for another evening of jollity. The next day we departed for
Nuremberg travelling through Austria’s beautiful countryside before arriving at
our hotel for the night.
Our last day of day of sightseeing saw us visiting the Nuremberg Rally grounds
by local tram; our guide for the morning was our very own Patrick Oberhoffer.
A leisurely lunch and shopping in Nuremberg was the last part of our trip before
our long coach ride home to Blighty and a chance to wish Happy Birthday to
Ricky. A beautiful town and well worth a return visit. On behalf of the staff and
students I would like to thank Mrs Caldwell for a most enjoyable and educational experience. We visited nine countries in nine days, travelled in excess of
2,000 miles and celebrated three birthdays!

Bandanas for Brain Tumours
ASHS students channelled their energy to get behind a major charity
fundraiser, in support of an “inspirational” pupil who has fought a long
battle with illness.
ASHS held the Bandanas for Brain Tumours event on Wednesday 29th
April for the benefit of The Brain Tumour Charity, inspired by 15-yearold student Liam Brown, who has undergone long-term medical treatment since being diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of three.
It was organised by our ‘A’ Team, a student-run welfare group that Liam is a part of, as part of
our ‘Pay It Forward’ project. The non-uniform event had already raised more than £600 by
lunchtime, with form groups carrying out various activities throughout the day, while live music
took place in the outdoor quad. The total amount raised was an amazing £755.24.
Lucy Rogerson, Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) said, “Liam is perhaps the
most incredible young man I have ever met. He has had a lot of challenges, but he is in school
with a smile, he never complains and he always wants to help. Liam is an inspiration and he has
wanted to give something back. You can see with all the bandanas out that the kids and staff
are really behind him; they have so much respect for him.”
Staff and students alike also took part in cake and bandana sales during breaks, with one Year
10 class alone bringing in more than £100 to go towards the cause.
The ASHS ‘A’ Team, which describes itself as aiming to ‘create an inclusive, safe and supportive environment in which students can thrive’, wrote on Twitter: “Overwhelmed by the AMAZING
support students at ASHS give to such an inspirational young man. #BandanasforBrainTumours
#ProudToBeASHS”

For the second year running we are collecting Sainsbury's Active Kids
vouchers. These vouchers help us buy much needed Food Technology
equipment. So, please ask your neighbours, friends or relatives to save them
for us and bring them to Mrs Joselyn or put them in the box in Reception.

ASHS PTA
We would like to say a big thank you to everyone for their support at the quiz night, which has enabled us
to purchase recording equipment for the French department and new swimming pool ropes. It is great to
be able to support the school in providing these additional resources.
We are looking forward to ASHStude, our summer festival on the field, which is being held on Saturday
20th June from 4.00 pm - 7.00 pm. Following the success of last year, this is set to be an even bigger event,
with live music, art displays, dance, drama, various stalls and games, BBQ and refreshments. This year we
will also be having a beer tent, with Pimms on offer.
We do hope you will be able to come along and support this event, and enjoy sharing the incredible talents
of our pupils. We would very much welcome any support on the day, either with setting up in the morning,
serving refreshments or packing away at the end. If you are able to help in any way, we would love to hear

Finally, just a reminder that we have now launched our 100 club. Application forms are on the school
website, and this is a great way of supporting the school. The more members we have the greater the prize
money and the more money we can raise!

100k London2Brighton Challenge
On 23rd May I'm running 100 kilometres (62 miles) from London to Brighton to raise money for ASHS PTA.
Why? Well as treasurer of the PTA (and the only dad currently on the committee) I am in awe of my fellow
committee members abilities to organise things like the quiz night and ASHStude, and I very often feel
slightly lost and out of my depth. The one thing I've done in recent years is a bit of running - this from the
man who as a teenager walked around the school field whilst Mr Bussel would shout "encouragement".
Running was not in my make up I'd decided! This changed just over four years ago when I decided to get
fit by taking up running. Since then I've run marathons, something I never imagined I would do. So I
decided I would needed a real challenge - and what better than a 100k run that would enable me to raise
money for my school!
As part of my training for this event I have run four marathons since March, and countless long runs, many
of them in excess of the marathon distance of 26.2 miles. It would be foolish to run race distance so most
long runs are followed by another the following day. This has meant that on Saturday I get up at 5am for
a 20+ mile run before work, then on a Sunday there's another 20+ mile run. My longest single run in
training has been 42.5 miles, again, I used to walk around the Archbishop Sancroft field in PE! I've worn
out several pairs of trainers during training! I have strong links to the school having done my GCSEs there
and my son is currently in Year 9 so this is my way of putting a little something back to a school that has
moulded me and many, many, others. If you would like to sponsor my epic challenge then you can do so

The library will be having a stock take in July so all library items will need to be returned before then. Your

This year I am involved with the stalls at our ASHStude event Saturday 20th June from 4-7pm.

These stalls will cost £10.00 and we can supply the table and chairs, please email [email protected] or

If anyone would like to donate any items for our own stalls could they please bring them to the school office:
we need raffle prizes; books for the book stall; glass jars filled with gifts for our jarbola stall; sweets for the
‘Guess the sweets’ stall and any plants. Also, cakes and savouries will be needed on the day or on the
Friday before.

News from the Cluster Team
Cluster Enrichment Twenty two pupils from all four Cluster Primary Schools attended an exciting
Science Gifted and Talented session at Harleston Primary School on Friday 11th May. The first part
of the morning was to watch a Bird Ringing demonstration by Mr Walsh, the Headteacher at HPS.
This was a very successful session with a good number and variety of birds caught. Mr Walsh, who
is a trained bird ringer, was able to show pupils how different species have adapted over time to
become successful garden birds. A Great Spotted Woodpecker was a terrific bird to catch and pupils
saw first hand how it can use its powerful beak. We also saw the plumage differences between a male
and female Bullfinch, looked at the beaks of various other birds including Blue, Great and Coal Tit,
Chaffinch, Wren and Dunnock.
The second part of the session was led by Mr Andy Hallsworth, who is Head of Animal Training and
Presentations at Banham Zoo. Andy shared a Powerpoint with pupils with examples of how birds
have adapted to flight, plumage and size. They got to see the difference in egg sizes from an Ostrich
to a Hummingbird, they all handles a variety of feathers and had to try to ‘preen’ their feather back into
good condition. We held bags that represented the difference in weight between a Vulture, Condor,
Eagle and an Owl. The best was saved until last though as we finished with everyone dissecting a
Barn Owl pellet and watching the excitement on their faces as they discovered jaw bones, skulls and
thigh bones of mice and voles.
Transition
Year 6 have had their final Stepping Up sessions. We learnt about organisation and preparing for the
extra responsibilities that come at High School. After the half term break we will be running two small
group activities; our ZAP one day confidence booster workshop and a self-esteem course for Year 6
girls running once a week for four weeks. We will also be inviting some of our Year 6’s to visit once a
week to join Miss Rogerson and the ASHS A-team for some further transition support.
We have enjoyed working with Year 6 and it has been especially exciting to welcome children from
twelve primary schools to our transition events. This year we have children joining us from Alburgh
with Denton, Brockdish, Harleston, Pulham, Mendham, Dickleburgh, Forncett, Scole, Diss, Long
Stratton, Tivetshall and Burston Primary Schools. Each Year 6 child coming to ASHS has been
presented with a book entitled ‘Going Up – your no worries guide to secondary school’ to further
support their move to our school. We now look forward to welcoming them on their first day of high
school – Monday 13th July.
Parents of Year 6 children, may we remind you that the Family Information Evening will be on
Wednesday 10th June and your family interview will be on either 16th or 17th June. It is important that
you attend both of these events even if you already have a child at ASHS.

Year 5 enjoyed an Outdoor Activity Day at ASHS on Wednesday 25th March, they went on a
scavenger hunt, put up tents, watched bird ringing, went mini beast hunting, did some wildlife
photography and played a very funny game involving clothes pegs! Our next Year 5 event is our
‘Experience Day’ on Monday 6th July.
Cluster Nature Day
On 2nd May our five Cluster schools came together at Harleston Primary School to host our annual
Nature Day. The weather was fine and over 650 people joined us for an afternoon of activities and
displays. The guinea pigs and baby bunnies from Melsop Park Farm were perhaps the most popular
attraction with an endless queue of children lining up for a cuddle! The Shetland Pony and tortoises
from Shorelands Wildlife Gardens were also in great demand and Ed from Mini Monsters had a busy
afternoon with his star attraction - Spike the Komodo Dragon. Mad Science wowed with experiments
for all ages, Ringsfield Hall got creative with natural materials and staff from all our schools helped
run many other craft based activities.

On Tuesday 28th April myself, Mrs Rix, Ms Frost, Mr
Player and forty of Year 10’s finest set off the The Globe
Theatre in London.
We were off the watch a
performance of William Shakespeare’s classic, Romeo
and Juliet.
For those who don’t know the plot, a violent street brawl
between rival families, the Montagues and Capulets, is the introduction to Romeo’s first
encounter with Juliet at a masque ball. Despite this, and the fact Juliet has been promised to
another, they fall in love.
However any plans for their future happiness are cruelly destroyed by renewed violence
between their families and tragedy begins to unfold, leading to the death not only of two rival
young men, but also the young lovers, just days after their wedding. Too late, their fate leads to
peace between the two warring clans.
Luckily we arrived early as when we got there a queue of eager
audience members was already forming. We had standing tickets;
watching the famous love story acted out before a mostly young
audience, standing attentively and hanging on to every word, is to
realise afresh the power of Shakespeare as both a poet and a
storyteller. Although standing for two hours was a challenge for
some, those who persevered were treated to an experience like no
other. Being that close to the magic happening on stage meant that
you felt truly involved in the story line.
It was an incredible performance and truly priceless for those who
attended, as they have now begun writing a controlled assessment
on the play. Thank you to all those involved in making it happen. Hopefully Romeo and Juliet
will be touring again next year so we can repeat the trip.

GSUS Bus is coming to ASHS
The week commencing 22nd June, we are lucky enough to be getting the GSUS Live bus again.
You won't be able to miss it when it's parked in the staff car park! We are planning to use RS
lessons during the week for years 7-10 to access the high-tech, purpose-built mobile classroom.
This will be offered free of charge with much thanks given to local churches. We will be looking
at the themes of fear, forgiveness and rejection introduced through Jesus' teachings.

South Norfolk Youth Advisory Board (YAB)
The Youth Advisory Boards (YABs) are set up around Norfolk to help co-ordinate and run
services for young people. The boards are made up of lots of different people including Police,
School, Health, Councillors and young people themselves. South Norfolk YAB has come up with
a plan of action based on lots of consultation with the local community and is providing:

All this is guided by the YAB and specially trained young people called Young Commissioners.

Sports News - Girls Rounders
It is that time of year again when schools in South Norfolk compete against each other in the
summer rounders league. This years season kicked off with a fixture against Wymondham
College at home and saw some brilliant play from both teams. The Year 7s played their first ever
match and with excellent performances from Caitlyn Penman and Maddie Thorpe managing to
finish with an overall score of twelve rounders! The Year 10s also worked hard to compete
against a tough squad. All the girls played with determination and outstanding sportspersonship,
proving that whilst you may not always win, you can use every experience to better your
performance.
We have been overwhelmed by the commitment shown by Year 7-10 at rounders practice on
Thursday lunchtimes and are very excited to see what the next few weeks will bring.
In other news, the dance team are practicing very hard in preparation for their performance at the
upcoming ASHStude! Make sure you come and have a look.

ASHS Drama Students Branch Out!
I am currently doing a summer show with the Theatre Royal. I am playing a parent in ‘Peter Pan The
Return to Neverland’. The show contains all the great original characters . The show is set in 1920
England. I have been with the Theatre Royal for a couple of years and appeared in some of their shows
. Due to doing the classes I have to work my way up almost and next year I am able to audition for
speaking roles and singing roles. Branni Harvey is also a part of the Theatre Royal and he is playing a
Lost Boy and has landed himself a speaking role.

Music News
Handel’s Messiah
Year 10 and 11 students recently took advantage of an opportunity to see a
performance of possibly the greatest of all oratorios - Handel’s Messiah. None
of the students had ever seen anything quite like it, a full baroque orchestra
and choir with around a hundred singers, all set in the glorious St. Andrews Hall
in Norwich. It really was incredible and helped enormously with the GCSE
music students’ studies of the piece.
Breeze Redwine
Talented year 8 singer, Breeze has just competed in the regional finals of the Teenstar national singing
competition. The event took place in London and Breeze made it through to the national finals, which will
take place in the N.E.C in Birmingham. The Teenstar competition attracts over 8000 acts each year and
is judged by music industry experts and professionals. The winner gets £5,000!
Isaac Low
Another year 8 - Isaac Low, has been asked for the second year in a row to perform in the touring Musical
of Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat. Last year he performed at Norwich Theatre Royal
and this year it will be in Ipswich.
Bandanas for Brain Tumours Day
During the school’s brilliant fund raising day recently, many of the school’s musicians and bands
performed in the quad at lunchtime. Special thanks to Liam Brown, Ricky Mills, Jack Seaman, Ethan
Wiles, Jake Lee-Savage, Jack Warren, Shania Scott, Ellie Clifford, Bonnie Theobald, Megan Wiles and
Kieran Jones for their contribution, help and musical skills!
Music Exams
Our brass teacher Ann Smith recently organised associated board examinations here at the school and
entered several of our students. Congratulations to Molly Andrews who passed her grade one trombone
exam and Jack Seaman who passed his grade 5 French horn exam with distinction! Huge thank you to
Ann for all her hard work, commitment and dedication with the students!

IT’S A TEAM EFFORT
In all our work, Governors meticulously avoid discussing individual
students or members of staff; we concentrate on the wider picture,
the headline results and progress. It is our proud boast, however,
that our professional colleagues know the individual needs of
every student so well and that the Teaching and Learning provided
is tailored specifically to meet their unique needs.
So what is the governors part in ensuring that students "do well" in the school?
Governors, through their committees and individual monitoring keep a watchful eye on the
progress of students. This comes to a climax in the spring term when the Headteacher and senior
colleagues present the latest progress results and predictions of student grades. Committees
receive detailed reports and ask probing questions to ensure that all students get the maximum
possible support.
Governors are completely satisfied that the team at ASHS are doing everything they can to make
sure that students have the very best chance of success. Teachers and support staff are working
long hours, many outside normal school hours, with individuals and groups of students, helping
those who need that extra input.
Every year we hear of students who have surpassed all expectations, but there are still some
students who struggle with formal examinations. Much time is spent in school practising exam
techniques, and the mock exams put this into practice in preparation for the GCSE exams.
Parents and carers play a vital part in supporting their children at this stressful time. Attendance
and home involvement are a fundamental requirement for students to “do well”.
The Governing body congratulate the staff and students for an excellent preparation to the
examination season this year despite some situations which could have potentially disrupted the
life of the school. The whole team is anticipating a great outcome and Governors wish all
students every success in the weeks ahead.

Pastoral Update
ASHS Uniform Policy:
We have recently conducted another uniform sweep and are delighted to see the vast majority of
students in excellent uniform and taking pride in their appearance. A reminder of the school
uniform expectations are given below. Please be aware that in the summer half term students are
permitted to not wear a blazer to school.
Blazer: Plain black blazer with pre-sewn on ASHS badge.
Unless given specific permission by a teacher, the blazer must be worn at all times in school (this
does not include break and lunchtime). The blazer does not need to be worn in the second
summer half term.
Shirt: Plain white. Must be worn tucked into trousers or skirt. Top button to be fastened at all times.
Tie: House coloured and worn at all times – available from school office
Trousers: Plain black, tailored (denim, black cotton jeans-styles, flares, leggings and combat
trousers or trousers with studs on the pockets are not acceptable). Tailored shorts are permitted
but must be knee length or below. Any belt worn must pass through loops and be plain black.
Jumper: (optional) School black v-neck jumper with red stripe in the v.
Socks: Plain black. Socks worn with a skirt must be below the knee.
Shoes: Plain black. Must be suitable for school and capable of being polished. Trainers,
suede, canvas shoes and boots are not allowed. High heels (greater than 2cm) are considered
dangerous on the grounds of health and safety and not allowed.
Coat: Students are expected to have an appropriate coat.
Skirt: School skirt ONLY. No more than 2 inches above or below the knee – available from school
office
Tights: Plain black or natural coloured (Socks may be worn with skirts as an alternative to tights
but these must be black.)
Mobile Device Policy
At the start of this year we introduced our new policy that allowed students to use mobile devices
in school to enhance and support their learning. On the whole this has proved to be very
successful with students being able to use the internet to research learning, record parts of
lessons and even complete homework on. A reminder, however, to all students that mobile
devices should only be used in classes at the discretion of the class teacher and failure to follow
this may result in a mobile device being confiscated and returned later. We hope that students
continue to use the mobile device policy sensibly so it can continue to support student learning
both in and out of the classroom.

We are aware that many students of the school regularly use social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter. We ask that parents and
carers are vigilant in the monitoring of this to safeguard and protect against on-line bullying and inappropriate behaviour.
