Dear Parents
My wife and I were fortunate enough to have spent eight
years teaching in Botswana. One of the things we really
enjoyed was our annual camping trips into the untamed
wilderness that Botswana is so well known for. If you have
not camped in Moremi or Chobe then you might not be aware
that there are no fences surrounding the camp sites. Wild
animals including lion, leopard, elephant and hyena, to name
a few, wonder through the camp site freely. This has the
effect of making one feel inadequate and you begin to see
the wild animals in a very different light. The very real and
dangerous world that they live in requires them to adapt to
various situations, many which are life threatening. Second
best is not an option and outsmarting and surviving predators
is an absolute necessity. There is a lot that we can learn
from animals and so I share some inspiration from giraffes.
Bringing a giraffe into the world is a tall order. A baby giraffe
falls 10 feet from its mother's womb and usually lands on its
back. Within seconds it rolls over and tucks its legs under its
body. From this position it considers the world for the first
time and shakes off the last vestiges of the birthing fluid from
its eyes and ears.
Then the mother giraffe rudely introduces its offspring to the
reality of life. The mother giraffe lowers her head long enough
to take a quick look. Then she positions herself directly over
her calf. She waits for about a minute, and then she does the
most unreasonable thing. She swings her long, pendulous
leg outward and kicks her baby, so that it is sent sprawling
head over heels. When it doesn't get up, the violent process
is repeated over and over again. The struggle to rise is
momentous. As the baby calf grows tired, the mother kicks it
again to stimulate its efforts. Finally, the calf stands for the
first time on its wobbly legs.
Then the mother giraffe does the most remarkable thing. She
kicks it off its feet again. Why? She wants it to remember how
it got up. In the wild, baby giraffes must be able to get up as
quickly as possible to stay with the herd, where there is
safety. Lions, hyenas, leopards, and wild hunting dogs all
enjoy young giraffes, and they'd get it too, if the mother didn't
teach her calf to get up quickly and get with it.

Year 1
This week each Year 1 teacher prepared Numeracy games for the students to enjoy. The
classes each had a turn to rotate and play games with the 3 teachers. These games allowed
the students to use their new Year 1 mathematical knowledge but in a very fun way.
The students had the opportunity to explore and play a variety of numeracy games that had
been organised by the different Year 1 teachers. They loved being able to visit the different
teachers and participate in numeracy activities while having lots of fun.

On Friday, 24 April our Year Two’s were privileged to have the fire and rescue team come and
give our students a presentation on fire, the dangers of fire and what their role as fire fighters
entails. The students were so excited, as they are learning about “The great fire of London” in
History this year. In class they have been doing different activities around the great fire of
London. They have been looking at the dangers of fire, the cause of the fire and the
consequences. The fire fighters taught us so much about fire. One fire fighter dressed up as our
students had to count him down to see how quickly he could change into his gear, which was
very interesting to see. They also showed us pictures of various fire situations and told us all
about ways to escape a fire and to keep ourselves safe. There was much excitement when the
fire fighters sprayed some water onto the field. The students got an opportunity to ask questions
at the end and were captivated throughout their presentation. The highlight of course being our
healthy lunch, consisting of a sandwich, a piece of fruit and juice, which we shared together after
the presentation. A great big Thank you to the fire fighters once again, for giving up their time to
come and share their experiences and knowledge with us.

Year 3 Grass Heads
Last week the Year 3’s made their very own
‘Grass Heads’. They watched Mister Maker
on Youtube.com, then they had to write down
what materials they would need and the
steps needed to create their own grass head.
The outcome was a classroom full of very
colourful and creatively made grass heads.
The students then watered their grass heads,
decorated the cups they would sit in, and
placed them on the classroom windowsill to
grow. The students look forward to watching
their creations grow grassy hair over the next
few weeks.

Life Long Learning
“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands, but in seeing with new
eyes.” – Marcel Proust“
In a busy world, it can often be hard to fit in time to learn anything that isn’t essential. The
only things learned are those that need to be. Everything beyond that is considered
frivolous. Even those who do appreciate the practice of lifelong learning, can find it difficult
to make the effort.
Here are 10 tips for installing the habit of lifelong learning:
1) Always have a book.
It doesn’t matter if it takes you a year or a week to read a book. Always strive to have a
book that you are reading through, and take it with you so you can read it when you have
time.
2) Keep a “To-Learn” List
We all have to-do lists. These are the tasks we need to accomplish. Try to also have a “tolearn” list. On it you can write ideas for new areas of study. Maybe you would like to take up
a new language, learn a skill or read the collective works of Shakespeare. Whatever
motivates you, write it down.
3) Guided Thinking
Albert Einstein once said, “Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little
falls into lazy habits of thinking.” Simply studying the wisdom of others isn’t enough, you
have to think through ideas yourself. Spend time journaling, meditating or contemplating
over ideas you have learned.
4) Put it Into Practice
Skills based learning is useless if it isn’t applied. Reading a book on C++ isn’t the same
thing as writing a program. Studying painting isn’t the same as picking up a brush. If your
knowledge can be applied, put it into practice.
5) Teach Others
You learn what you teach. If you have an outlet of communicating ideas to others, you are
more likely to solidify that learning. Start a blog, mentor someone or even discuss ideas
with a friend.
6) Learn in Groups
Lifelong learning doesn’t mean condemning yourself to a stack of dusty textbooks. Join
organizations that teach skills. Workshops and group learning events can make educating
yourself a fun, social experience.
7) Unlearn Assumptions
You can’t add water to a full cup. Too many convictions simply mean too few paths for new
ideas. Actively seek out information that contradicts your worldview.
8) Find Jobs that Encourage Learning
Pick a career that encourages continual learning. If you are in a job that doesn’t have much
intellectual freedom, consider switching to one that does. Don’t spend forty hours of your
week in a job that doesn’t challenge you.
9) Start a Project
Set out to do something you don’t know how. Forced learning in this way can be fun and
challenging. If you don’t know anything about computers, try building one. If you consider
yourself a horrible artist, try a painting.
10) Follow Your Intuition
Lifelong learning is like wandering through the wilderness. You can’t be sure what to expect
and there isn’t always an end goal in mind. Letting your intuition guide you can make selfeducation more enjoyable. Most of our lives have been broken down to completely logical
decisions, that making choices on a whim has been stamped out.

Date: 29-04-2015
Result: 7-0 (BIS won)
The match started at a cracking pace with Daniel Schlacher scoring
the first goal. This was closely followed by a goal from Kéno Theart.
I am really pleased to see that the boys had taken note of their
coaches training and applied many of the skills he had drilled into
them at practice.
Our defence did not see much of the ball as the pressure was put on
Elkanah. We finished on a 7-0 victory, with goals being scored by
Chidozie Muoka, Kimsley Gatakata and a superb hat trick from
Matthew Petersen.
Many thanks to the parents who came to support their children.
Once again, I was proud of their excellent manners and
sportsmanship.

BIS U/19 Soccer team beats Milnerton High
29th
Yesterday,
May 2015 the U/19 soccer team played in their first
match of the season versus Milnerton High. The match started off
slowly with both teams testing each other out. But it was not long
before BIS got through the defence and Maurice Theart scored the
first goal. BIS went into half time leading 1 – 0. Milnerton struck back
after half time with two goals. BIS fought back and Brian Teixeira
scored, soon after that Maurice Theart went through and scored his
second goal of the match, making sure BIS lead the game 3 – 2.
Luckily after 5 minutes of intense defence the final whistle blew and
BIS won the game.
Congratulations to the team, it was really a team effort.

29th May 2015 and needless to say

competition
was
tough.
Nevertheless, our girls held their own
and remained focused. The girls are
to be complimented on their good
behaviour on and off the court and
for their consistent perseverance.
The final score was 13 – 2 in favour
of Woodbridge.

Qhayiya Melapi in Reception class, took
part in the 2.1km and 300m in the Two
Oceans Family Fun Run and won a
beautiful kettle for her mom.

Ethan Calhau and Caden Leonard took part in the
Two Oceans Family Fun Run. Ethan took part in the
2.1km and the 300m. He attempted the 2.1km for
three years and this was the first year he completed it
running the whole way! Mommy and Daddy are so
proud of you, Ethan.

Maurice Theart,
only turned 14 in December and
made his 1st debut on Monday, 27th April when he was
asked to play for the Table View Football Club's 2nd
team. The majority of the players in the 1st and 2nd
team are excellent soccer players with exceptional skills
and mostly 20 years of age and older.
Maurice came on in the 2nd half, and was naturally very
nervous at first, but it was only a matter of minutes when
Maurice looked like a natural. He played exceptionally
well, and made awesome passes, and almost created a
goal for the team! The team ended with 0 all against
Hanover Park. It was a very physical and tough game,
but Maurice played like a star, and the entire team and
coaches commended him for his quality play.
Maurice also plays for the under 15A team for Table
View soccer club, but Monday's game was an
outstanding achievement, as it is hardly ever that you
see a 14 year old play for a football's club 2nd team for
adults.

It with great pleasure that we announce that SNAG will be co-sponsoring the launch of
the Atlantic Beach Junior Golf Academy. The event will take place on Sunday 17th May
at the Atlantic Beach Driving Range from 2:00 – 4:30pm, and we are personally inviting
you to attend the launch. Please take this opportunity to introduce your children (or
grandchildren) and their friends to golf and participate in this fun event with us. with us.
Participation is free, and your attendance will make this a most memorable and
enjoyable day at Atlantic Beach Golf Club for the children. Our aim is to encourage
young people to learn, play and enjoy the
game of golf, and ultimately improve participation
levels in our sport.
PROGRAM
Registration:
We will have a staffed registration area open
from 2pm for checking in. All children
registering will receive a free give away.
Instruction/Practice:
Once children have been registered they will move through to the
supervised SNAG practice areas for instruction by qualified
SNAG instructors . All sizes of equipment will be available and
they will have an incredible amount of fun with the easy to use
SNAG equipment.
Competition:
When they are confident and feel ready they can enter the competition area.
Score cards will be kept for each of the 3 SNAG disciplines (Rolling, Chipping
and Launching) and scores will be displayed on the scoreboard.
Prizes:
Prize giving will be held at 4:30pm sharp. We have fantastic prizes including
