Journeyman Lineman
DEFINITION
Under direction, repairs and maintains electric transmission, and distribution
lines, does other related duties as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the senior level in this classification for performing work on the City’s
electrical transmission and distribution system. The junior class is apprentice
lineman.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Makes emergency repairs to power lines and equipment sometimes working on
distribution systems when they are energized.
Maintains, and repairs traffic controllers (electronic and mechanical) and street
lighting.
Installs, tests, repairs, and maintains single and three phase meters, wiring, and
equipment.
Installs, altars, and replaces distribution lines and equipment in substations and
transformer vaults.
Troubleshoots distribution lines controlling equipment to locate and correct
causes of outages and improper operation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE:
Qualified Journeyman Lineman with four (4) years of experience in the
installation, repair, and maintenance of electric transmission, and distribution
lines and equipment.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Knowledge electrical transmission and distribution systems, transformers, series
and parallel circuits, line loading, line losses, and dielectric or conductive
properties of materials.

Knowledge of procedures used in installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical
lines, transformers, regulators, switches, and other electric distribution
equipment.
Knowledge of safety precautions to be taken in working with high voltage and
energized circuits.
Ability to plan and carry through operations in the installation, troubleshooting,
and repair of high-voltage distributing systems.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Idaho Drivers license
