PRINCIPAL’S
MESSAGE
Bettina E. Batista
We
have
just wrapped
up
a
successful
1st semester and are looking forward
to an equally successful 2nd
semester! I am always filled with a
sense of amazement as we move
from the first half of the school year
into the second half. The first
semester always seems to fly by and
this year is no different. There are
many exciting activities and events
happening at BVH. We hope that
you and your child have had an
opportunity to become involved in at
least one of the activities or events
that we offer. We have over 40
extra-curricular clubs on campus and
28 sports teams. Not to mention our
highly
regarded
Academic
Decathlon Team, Speech & Debate
Team, band, dance, and vocal music
departments. Of course, the number
one priority at BVH is the education
of your child.
We have a
tremendously dedicated staff whose
focus is academic achievement and
your child’s overall education.
BVH continues its top ranking status
as the standard bearer in providing a
quality education for our students.
The teachers and the administration
work closely together to ensure the
BARON BANNER-BVHS Newsletter
(619) 397-2000
“Right Learning, Right Rigor and
the Right Work” is observed in
every classroom. Evidence of this
includes teachers establishing a
Daily Learning Target (standards
based), Engaging and Supporting All
Students in their Learning (research
based
instructional
strategies)
Checking
for
Understanding
(effective assessments that drive
instruction) and developing students’
Academic Language. This is in
addition to our continued work on
our full implementation to the new
Common Core Curriculum.
My assistant principals and I visit
classrooms on a daily basis to assess
the effectiveness of the classroom
learning environment. BVH offers
an array of resources and
interventions to address concerns we
come across. Our standardized test
scores and other testing results
reveal that excellent teaching and
learning is happening at BVH and
we remain committed to continuing
on this upward path.

Although Semester II has just begun,
the end of the year will be here
before you know it. Please ensure
you are up to date on your child’s
progress and he or she is
successfully
completing
the
necessary
requirements
for
graduation. As always, establishing
and maintaining close contact with
us is critical. If you have not done
so already, please take the time to
“check in” with your child’s teachers
and counselor. An open line of
communication is a key component
to our mutual work in providing the
best educational experiences for our
younger Barons.
A quality education is predicated
upon achieving and maintaining a
healthy and safe lifestyle. I highly
encourage
you
to
visit
www.onguardonline.gov to learn
how to help teens maintain a healthy
dose of social media usage.
Happy New Year!
In an effort to continue to ensure we
are providing a quality and rigorous
education BVH along with every
high school in the District is
currently finalizing the WASC
(Western Association of Schools and
Colleges) Accreditation process. Our
year- long Self Study and reporting
obligation will culminate in a three
day site visit from a WASC Team in
March. BVH’s last WASC was in
2008 where we received the highest
rating possible; a 6 year clear
Accreditation.

10TH – 12TH GRADE
STUDENTS
California Scholarship
Federation (CSF)
CSF is a scholastic honor society
with each semester of membership
based on excellent grades earned the
previous semester. If a student
receives “mostly” “A” and “B”
grades in scholarship and is
currently in grades 10, 11 or 12,
he/she
might
qualify
for
membership, depending on the
courses and grades he/she received
in December 2014. A “D” or “F”
grade in scholarship or citizenship
automatically disqualifies a student
from membership. CSF’s two week
spring registration was held from
January 26th to February 6th at lunch
in the counseling center. Students
were reminded through Jupiter
grades, the daily bulletin and the
marquee to apply.

at thousands of colleges and
universities throughout the United
States.
Notes from the
Library
BVHS offers 20 AP courses. Most
students who take AP exams are in
grades 11 and 12; however,
sophomores are able to take a few
AP tests, as well. Students should be
enrolled in the respective AP
course(s) to take the exams. The
cost of each exam is $91.
All exam fees should be paid at the
ASB office on February 9, 10, 11
& 12 at lunch. Late registrations
will be charged $20 per exam. A
late registration period will extend
only through Friday, Feb. 20th. The
IB/AP Exam Schedule is included as
an insert in this issue of the Baron
Banner. Exams are scheduled for
May 4 - May 15, 2015, with
morning and afternoon test sessions.
Alternate
examinations
are
scheduled from May 20 - May 22,
2015 for any students with an IB test
conflict.
AP Registration/Fees—May 2015
exam fee reductions
Families who believe they may be
eligible for a fee reduction for May
2015 exams should apply for the
free/reduced lunch program as soon
as possible. Lunch cards from last
year must be renewed. Students or
families eligible for the federally
funded free/reduced lunch programs
are automatically eligible for exam
fee reductions.
Fee reductions
represent an $86 savings per
exam.
Applications for the
free/reduced lunch programs are
available, and must be turned in, at
the cafeteria prior to the AP exam
registration period.

Library Volunteers

has links to many online reference
and research sites. Please bookmark
it on your home computer and
portable devices.
Ask about access to online textbooks
as they are available for some math
classes. Special thanks are extended
to parents and students who have
donated books and magazines.
Contact librarian Mary Anderson at
(619) 397-2030 if you have items to
donate.
Care of Textbooks
Most books cost $60-$200+.
Students should write names inside
the front cover and do need to cover
textbooks to protect them from
damage as well as to give the
textbook a district look. During
winter which usually has a rainy
season, students need to take special
care to guard against water damage.
Whenever possible, class sets are
provided so that the student copies
can remain at home. For some older
textbook adoptions, students will
need to bring the textbook from
home for class use. The most
frequent cause of book damage

Parent volunteers are welcome in
the library throughout the school
year. We have many tasks ranging
from simple shelving of books to
barcoding and data entry. The last
two weeks in the spring and the first
two weeks of the school year are
especially busy times. Call 619-3972030 if interested in volunteering in
the library.
