These lectures will examine the persistence of creation
in the Old Testament against death, chaos, and evil and
demonstrate its spiritual relevance for today. Genesis,
Leviticus, Job, Ecclesiastes, and Isaiah all offer rich perspectives on creation with the key themes of creation and
chaos, human dominion, a Promised Land, and farming as
stewardship.
We will contrast these biblical ideas with those of contemporary science, such as the Big Bang, Evolution, and
Chaos theory. In addition, there will be a focus on biblical
animals for their role in revelation and bestowing wisdom
to human beings.
Carey Walsh, Th.D (Harvard) is professor
of Old Testament at Villanova University,
lecturing on Biblical Theology, Science
and Religion, Sustainability and Biblical
Ethics. She is the author of Chasing Mystery: A Catholic Biblical Theology.
Fr. Patrick Mullen
Meeting Jesus Through Luke’s Eyes
Each of the four Gospel writers has a special insight into
the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Luke, whose readings will be used from Advent 2015 – November 2016, is
the master story teller of the Four Evangelists.
He artfully reworks his earlier sources and adds a treasure
trove of unique material, opening up Jesus’ infancy and
adolescence for his readers, sharing the clearest female
voices in the New Testament and advocating for the poor.
This workshop is appropriate for all adult believers open
to a deeper level of engagement with Scripture, but will
be particularly suited for preachers, catechists, RCIA leaders, and liturgy planners.
A priest of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Fr. Patrick Mullen is professor of
Biblical Studies, New Testament, at St.
John’s Seminary, Camarillo and pastor of
Padre Junipero Serra Parish, Camarillo.
The book of Psalms has a central place in both Jewish and
Christian traditions. The Gospels tell of Jesus and the disciples singing “hymns”– likely the so-called Hallel psalms.
Thomas Merton wrote that the psalms “contain within
themselves the silence of high mountains and the silence
of heaven. . . . The Psalter only truly begins to speak and
sing within us when we have been led by God and lifted
up by Him, and have ascended into its silences.”
This grand collection of psalms is a treasured hymnbook
inviting and expressing the people’s praise to God. Here
is also a prayer book, voicing the needs of individuals and
the community in times of trouble.
Finally, the book of Psalms serves as instruction book, as
indicated in the opening psalm’s invitation to “meditate
day and night” on the life-giving word of God. (Ps. 1:2)
Bishop Michael Byrnes was ordained a
priest for Detroit in 1996, earned his Doctorate in Sacred Theology in 2003 from
the Gregorian University and ordained
to the episcopacy in 2005. Bishop Byrnes
is the Regional Moderator, Northeast
Region, Archdiocese of Detroit.

Castelot Summer Scripture began in
1996 at the former St. John Provincial
Seminary in Plymouth, MI. The summer scripture is named in honor of Fr.
John (Jack) Castelot (cast-uh-low) who
introduced so many of us in the Archdiocese of Detroit to the richness of the
scriptures.
Jack died in 1999, but his blessing remains as we continue
to grow year by year. We look forward to welcoming back
old friends and meeting new friends this summer for the
19th Castelot Summer Scripture.

set in the context of prayer – morning and evening
prayer, afternoon Eucharist. It is meant for ordinary people who have a love of scripture and a thirst for deeper
understanding.
