Use your Bible as a Prayer Book!
P R A Y I N G T H E B I B L E Use your Bible as a Prayer Book! Most prayer books are 98 percent Scripture. Rather than buying prayer books, you can follow this simple pattern that will give you options for prayer throughout the day. As Catholics, we usually feel more comfortable using a prayer book and we know we need to read more Scripture. This handy way of praying allows us to take care of both issues at the same time. To be most successful at praying through Scripture, we must follow several rules: are not on a time schedule to finish books, get through the Psalms, etc. We are on God’s time. Start here for the other prayers throughout the day. < < We < If we miss a day or a time for prayer, we need to follow James 2:23 and just continue where we left off in Scripture. < When reading the Scripture passages, focus on letting the Scriptures speak to you rather than getting through big chunks of reading. < Place the bookmarks in the following places in your Bible. PSALM 100 - place at Psalm 100 PSALMS - place at Psalm 1 SCRIPTURE - place at Mark 1 START HERE Place this bookmark at Psalm 100 and use it to begin your first prayer of the day. < < Make the Sign of the Cross Make the Sign of the Cross < “Lord, open my lips and my mouth will proclaim your praise. Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit... Go to the Psalm bookmark and read a section of Psalms. < “O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me. Amen.” < Read one section of the Psalms indicated on the back of this bookmark each time you pray. The Psalms are poetry and are about how a person feels, not necessarily about being word-for-word truth. Let your emotions flow with the writer of the Psalms. How do you experience God like the Psalmist does? After Psalms, go to the Scripture bookmark. Read and reflect on a Scripture passage of your choice. Make the Sign of the Cross as you begin to read. Amen.” See back of bookmark for notes about reading scripture. S C R I P T U R E < Reading Scripture As you read, focus on relating to the Scripture you are reading. Each type of Scripture is read differently. Old Testament History Books— Place yourself in the story as one of the people, as a main character or as an observer. Prophets— Hear how the prophets are speaking to your life, or the culture of your nation, state or community. Gospels— Read one story at a time, hearing Jesus speak to you. Letters of the New Testament— Ask yourself how you would feel if you were Paul or Peter writing these words. Use your Bible as a Prayer Book! We invite you to visit your Bible throughout the day in a continuous fashion, using these bookmarks as a way to remember where to go. The point is to not have a certain set of readings for a particular day or time, but to go through the Scriptures at certain points throughout the day.
