Dr. Elton Bouldin, CHS Principal Twitter: http://twitter.com/cullmancats1 E-mail: [email protected] School Web: http://chs.cullmancats.net School Calendar: CHS CALENDAR Symphonic Band – deemed Superior 22 consecutive years The Symphonic Band scored “Superior” for the twenty-second year in a row following performances at the Music Performance Assessment (State Band Contest) held on the campus of the University of North Alabama Thursday. The Symphonic Band, pictured performing at the state contest, received all ones from the judges in both their stage performance and sight reading assessments. The Concert Band made all “Excellent” ratings for their stage performance and in sight-reading. Honor Society Inducts Seventy-nine The National Honor Society (NHS) held their annual induction ceremony Wednesday, March 11th. The sixty-three members of NHS welcomed seventy-nine new members to this prestigious group. Selection to NHS is based upon academic and personal accomplishments. New members are charged with four goals that include creating enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulating a desire to render service, promoting leadership, and developing character. The NHS sponsor is Ms. Jennifer Calahan. 1 March 30th designated as a Flexible Attendance Day The Cullman City Board of Education has approved a recommendation by Superintendent Dr. Doreen Griffeth, to allow students to the inclement weather make-up day scheduled for Monday March 30 with a Flexible Learning Day. This will allow students to obtain attendance credit by completing outside school assignments. Students will document six hours of school work outside of the normal school day instead of attending school on Monday, March 30, 2015. Each teacher will provide and supervise the completion of a fifty minute classroom assignment to be completed before Friday, March 27th. Completion of the assignments will serve as proof of attendance on Monday, March 30th. We look forward to helping students successfully participate in this unique learning opportunity. Students will be notified of their specific assignments by each CHS teacher on Friday, March 20th and these assignments will be posted on the CHS/CCS web-sites. Trending School News Scholars Bowl Team-National Qualifier: The Scholars Bowl team placed second in the Junior Varsity division of the regional National History Bowl competition at Spain Park High School on Saturday, March 14. Their second place finish qualifies them for the National History Bowl in Washington, D.C. in April. Team members Andrew Cryer, Malachi Blackwood, and Gabby Orr competed against teams from Tennessee and Florida as well as first place winner Arab High School. Among their wins include a 230 to 100 victory over Gulf Breeze and a 220 to 70 victory over Community from the Nashville area. The Scholars Bowl Team is sponsored by Dr. Wendy Stephens. Nationally Certified Teachers Honored: The Alabama State Department of Education proclaimed March 8 - 14, 2015 as National Teacher Board Certification Week. The National Board was established as the profession's vehicle for defining and recognizing accomplished teaching. At Cullman High School Lori Andrews, David Benefield, Johnny Burks, Carin Rains, Angela Stansberry, and Dr. Wendy Stephens have all attained National Teacher Board Certification. Perez Advances to State Contest: Cullman Area Career Center students competed in the Northeast District Skills USA competition Friday at Wallace State. There were 13 schools and a total of 350 contestants. During that competition Estella Perez placed second in Cosmetology and will advance to the State Skills USA competition in April. Senior Profile: Senior students interested in submitting a photo of yourself or yourself and a friend to the Bearcat News Network for an upcoming profile of the Senior Class should provide a photograph to Mr. Burks. Sign your name(s) to the back of the picture. The photographs should be tasteful and meaningful. The photographs may or may not be returned to you. 3-on-3 Tournament: A March Madness 3-on-3 basketball tournament will take place March 25th. There is a cash prize for the winning team and all proceeds will go toward Relay for Life. See Miss McCutcheon to sign-up. All forms are due Thursday, March 19th. Trending Sports News Track Wins Gadsden Meet: Both CHS Track and Field Teams placed first in the Gadsden City Invitational on Thursday, March 12. In the throwing events multiple point scores came from Austin Elrod, Kristina Muller, Madison Lee, and Olivia Kontogeorge. The distance competition was led with great performances from Kyle Norris, Tucker Franey, Joey Franklin, Ben Ratliff, Tucker Adkison, Marisa Franklin, Rachael Collins, Lexy Sivley, Kendall Adkison, and Alexandra Holt. In the distance events CHS had multiple point scorers in each event and won a majority of the events with as many as 3 and 4 athletes taking the top 8 spots. The men had 3 of the top 4 spots in the 3200. The hurdles were dominated by Savanna Canter and Tayla Sparg taking 1st and 2nd in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. Danny Lopez and Logan Shugarts made a great showing in the 300 meter hurdles. Kelsey Wren, Olivia Kontogeorge, and Allie Gipson were the Bearcat 2 stalwarts in the jumps as well as in the 4x100 relay. All six of the Bearcat relays scored points to ensure championships for both the men and women’s teams. Track Athletes Place Vestavia Invitational: In the King of the Mountain track and field meet at Vestavia Hills High School Garrison Hill placed 5th with a vault of 13-06. Freshman, Emily Johnson took 2nd place in the discus throw with a throw of 88-04. Savanna Canter was 2nd in the 100 meter hurdles with a time 16.10 seconds and 3rd place in the 300 meter hurdles in a time of 49.78 seconds, both personal records. Women’s Soccer Host Shamrock Tournament: The fourth ranked Lady Bearcats defeated Briarwood Christian and top ten Madison Academy during the Cullman Shamrock Invitational as they extended their season record to 10-2. Kaitlin Cook made the All-tournament team and recorded 3 goals and two assists for the weekend. Other individual highlights included Abby Branham 2 goals, Leah Shaddix 2 assists, Ninfa Moreno 1 assist. Emma Hicks, Christina Skinner, and Savannah Moss each scored one goal. Soccer VM vs Athens: The fifth ranked Varsity Men lost to Athens 2-1 with Isaac Rodriguez scoring on a Ben Walker assist. KJ Potter had 7 saves. The JV tied Athens 1-1 with Ty Whaley scoring on a Ben Hempfling assist. Jaron Potter had 7 saves.
