Math team Second in State Tournament
The CHS Math Teams recently placed second the Alabama Math Tournament (Division II). The Team
competed in the final round of the Alabama State Mathematics Contest held at the University of North
Alabama. Schools were selected to compete in this round, by invitation only, based on performance in round
one which consisted of a two-hour individual written examination. The final round was a head-to-head
ciphering match with questions in Geometry, Algebra II, as well as Comprehensive. After three hours of
intense competition, Cullman High School finished with an impressive score of 162 for the day, just 2 points
behind St. James High School. Students attending the final round included Ben Ratliff, Emma Hicks, Wil Raney,
Andy Robinson, Mitchell Seymore, Ann Carol Braswell, Jake Ratliff, Carley Byerley, Molly McLeroy, Cameron
Cottingham, and Nik Hartwig. Math Team sponsors are Mrs. Janice Burrows and Mrs. Elizabeth Pylant.
Students Crowned in Annual Pageants
The Junior Class recently sponsored the Miss Southerner and Cullman County Fair Queen pageants in the CHS
Auditorium. In the Miss Southerner Pageant

First Alternate was Brooke Edwards, 2nd
Alternate was Harper Canaday, Miss
Photogenic was Brooke Edwards, and Miss
Congeniality was Emily Booker.

School News
Mechanics Team Advances to State: The FFA Agriscience Mechanics Team placed second in the
District contest this Friday at Wallace State. The team of Justin Butts, Spencer Allen, John Brown, and Brennen
Stricklin will now participate in the State FFA Contest in June at Auburn University.

Ford Named Student of the Year: The Cullman County Area Chamber of Commerce has
named Hadyn Ford (pictured right) the 2015 Career Technical Student of the Year. Hadyn was
recognized during the Chamber’s Annual Student and Teacher of the Year Award Banquet with
a certificate and $250 scholarship. The county wide competition considered the students’
GPA, extracurricular activities, awards, a written essay on their proposed college course of
study and occupation, letters of recommendations and an interview with an independent
panel of judges.
Chamber Choir Auditions: Auditions for the Chamber Choir will be held Wednesday 22
at 2:00 in Choir Room. See Mr. Agnew for details on auditions and other singing opportunities.
German Club Garners Awards: The German Club recently competed in a state wide digital
competition. Individual winners included: Skit, Level 2, First Place Megan Lovell, Caroline Holland, and Anna
Avery; Poster Collage Level 1, Third Place Bailey Beckman and Lindsey Morrison; Poster Collage, Level 2,
Second Place Reagan Short; Original Art, Level 2, First Place Celyn Jones and Olivia Landreth; Children's Book,
Level 1, Third Place Cort Chandler and Brock Laminack; Dictation, Level 2, First Place Celyn Jones; Reading
Comprehension, Level 1, First Place: Brock Laminack; Geography, Level 1, First Place Cort Chandler;
Geography, Level 3/4, First Place: Emily Brown; Geography, Level 2, and First Place Reagan Short. The German
Club sponsor is Misti Bressette
Students Elected SGA: The following students were elected to
serve as Student Government Association officers for 2015-15 (l-r):
Logan Shugarts, President; Ann-Carol Braswell, Vice-President;
Taiya Ponder, Secretary; Grace Binkowski, Treasurer; and Liz
Tankersley, Parliamentarian.
County Youth Leadership: Applications for the 2015-16 Cullman
County Youth Leadership program are available in the Guidance
Department. Any tenth grade student that would like to apply for
the program must return the application April 23rd.
FAFSA Workshop: A representative from WSCC will be on campus to assist parents and students in
completing the FAFSA college financial assistance application in the CHS Media Center April 29 between 3:00
and 5:00 p.m.
Sports News
Tennis Teams Wins Section: Both CHS Tennis teams secured a place in the AHSAA State 6A Tournament
with Section Championships. For the Lady Bearcats Emily Graves/Emily Mullins finished first in #3 doubles and
Kate Hood/Gentry Bussman finished first in #2 doubles. In
singles, Olivia Sharpton finished first at the #1 position, Kacie
Donaldson finished first at #3, Kate Hood finished first at #4,
Gentry Bussman finished first at #5, and Emily Graves finished
first at #6.
Jacob Lambert/Drew Fillinger finished first in #3 doubles,
Parker Adams/Hunter Manley finished first in #2 doubles, and
Matthew Davis/Donnie Camp finished first in #1 doubles. In
singles, Parker Adams finished first at the #4 position, Hunter
Manley finished first at #5, and Drew Fillinger finished first at

#6. Both teams are pictured above with their championship trophies. The Tennis Team sponsor is Mr. Cory
Goble and Mr. Jerry Mason is the instructional coach.
Baseball Wins First Round State Tournament: The top ranked 6A Bearcats advanced to the second round
of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Tournament with a two game sweep of Athens on Saturday.
The cats won 6-3 in the first game and 11-0 in the second game. CHS is now scheduled to play Hartselle this
Friday at Bill Shelton Field (5:00 and 7:00). Individual highlights from the games include Owen Lovell (two
homeruns and 5 RBIs), Jesse Scott (12 strike-outs), Noah Fondren (5 - 6), Kolby Robinson (2-3), Orvis Cuello (2
RBIs), Drake Hollingsworth (1 hit), Sam Huser (1 hit), and Sam Huser (shut out on 4 hits).
Soccer VW Win Section: The Lady Bearcats defeated Lee High School 4-0 to solidify their number 1
seeding in section play and home field advantage in the first round of the state tournament. This is the first
time section win in then years. Ninfa Moreno had one goal and one assist while Kaitlin Cook, Abby Branham,
and Leah Shaddix each scored a goal. The record now stands at 16-2.
Track and Field: The Cullman Bearcat Track and Field teams won both divisions of the Cullman PreSectional Invitational. The Lady Bearcats scored 131 points to place first in front of Walker’s 122 points and
Hartselle’s third place 114.5 points. Top performers included Emily Johnson 1st discus (93-06), Savanna
Canter 2nd 100 meter hurdles and 1st 300 meter hurdles, Tayla Sparg 2nd 300 meter hurdles, Olivia
Kontogeorge 3rd Triple (33-04.5), Kelsey Wren 1st high jump (5-02), Ann Carol Braswell 1st pole vault (9') and
Anna Franklin 3rd pole vault (8').
The men’s team scored 97 points versus Hartselle’s 76 points and Florence’s 3rd place finish with 71
points. Top three performers included Walker Caretti 1st 800 meter run (2:05), Kyle Norris 1st 1600 meter run
and 3200 meter run (4:34 and 9:37), Logan Shugarts, Michael Bentley, Jack Griffin, and Walker Caretti 3rd
4x400 meter relay, Kyle Norris, Tucker Franey, Joey Franklin, and Walker Caretti 1st 4x800 meter relay(8:26),
Garrison Hill 1st pole vault (14-00), Ben Johnson 1st shot put (44-05) and Austin Elrod 1st discus (130-08). The
Track and Field sponsors are Coach Trent Dean and Coach Kristen Barnett.
Semester Exam Schedule
Semester Exam Schedule: The Cullman City School Board has scheduled 2015 Spring Semester exams for
May 26-28. In accordance with this schedule, semester exams at CHS will be administered as follows:

With over 268 semester exams to be administered to 900 students in three days, we are unable to grant
exceptions to the schedule unless there is an emergency. In advance, we appreciate your compliance with
