China Airlines Wins Red Dot Design Award
Following in the footsteps of other prestigious brands including Apple's renowned iMac and
iPhone, BMW's i3, and the celebrated Dyson Air Multiplier bladeless fan, China Airlines'
NexGen cabin design for its 777-300ER aircraft has now garnered a Red Dot Design Award
for 2015. The seat design for the new Premium Business Class has achieved a 'Best of the
Best' designation, marking the first time a business class cabin design has won such an
accolade. In addition, China Airlines' Sky Lounge was also named as a winner at the awards.
Known as "the Olympics of Design," Red Dot is now entering its 60th year. Since 1955, the
Award has been dedicated to honoring outstanding designs and has been recognized as one of
the world's most encompassing and prestigious design awards alongside other rarified
designations including Germany's iF Award and America's Industrial Design Excellence
Award (IDEA). For its part, Red Dot attracts over 15,000 designs every year that are
submitted by participants hailing from more than 70 countries.
Professor Dr Peter Zec, Founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award:“The most-respected design
experts have been convening every year in Essen to seek out the best designs. This year we
had a record number of almost 5,000 entries–a huge amount of work for our jury members,
who assessed each individual product, and a special value of the distinction due to the high
standard. The laureates of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 have demonstrated
exceptionally high achievements and have thus been deservedly successful in the world’s
largest design competition.”In June, representatives of China Airlines will travel to Essen,
Germany to take part in the awards ceremony to be held at the Aalto-Musiktheater Essen,
where the best in Taiwanese design will be on display for the world to see.
The criteria for the Red Dot Award, include innovation, functionality, ergonomics,
environmental-friendliness, symbolism, and emotional significance. China Airlines reached
out to top designers from different fields to put together a unique interior assemblage for the
Premium Business Class. The company drew inspiration from both Oriental aesthetics and
Taiwanese culture while balancing environmental concerns and technological innovations.
For example, the layout incorporates the industry's first-ever persimmon wood interior as well
as ergonomic lie-flat chairs with deep blue patterns and dark gold rendering, complemented
by ambiance lighting. In addition, there are personal cabinets minibars, USB ports, and
power outlets. Meanwhile, China Airlines' Sky Lounge features a high-ceilinged space that
offers an East-meets-West dining experience and recreational area. This in turn constitutes yet
another expression of Taiwanese culture.
As a leading brand in Taiwan's aviation industry, China Airlines has been committed to
bringing Taiwan's most exquisite cultural experience to the air, offering passengers a chance
to feel, hear, taste, and ultimately fall in love with its homeland. The Company enhances its
quality of service with creative efforts that has now achieved the top prize at Red Dot. China
Airlines has again brought Taiwanese cultural potential and lifestyle into the global spotlight.
China Airlines' NextGen designs have gathered a significant number of award recognitions
around the world. Among others, the company has recently received Italy's ‘A' Design Award’;
recognition for‘Outstanding Enterprise Innovation’ at the National Industrial Innovation
Award by Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs; and ‘Leisure Travel Awards – Best
Outstanding Innovation’ by America's Global Traveler magazine. Other achievements include
‘Best Design’ at the Golden Pin Design Award, and an ‘Excellence Award’ offered by the
Taiwan International Design Competition. The Sky Lounge has ranked fifth among The
Design Air's top ten airport lounges in the world. Four 777-300ER aircrafts are now serving
flights running to Los Angeles, New York, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. A fifth aircraft is
expected to be delivered this month.
