As a leader in the field, Community Living Toronto offers supports to over 6,000 individuals with an intellectual disability and their families including residential and day supports, assistance with employment, community supports, early childhood services and respite. With funding from the Canada Summer Jobs Program, a Government of Canada initiative, we are hiring for the Summer Student position of Diversity and Outreach Assistant (8 weeks). QUALIFICATIONS: Be between 15-30 years of age Have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year Be a student in a secondary, post-secondary, vocational or technical program Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial legislation and regulations Relevant educational background: e.g. social work, sociology, education, health promotion, disability, equity or women’s studies Some experience (paid or volunteer) with outreach, research, program promotion, public education or community development activities engaging diverse communities. An understanding of equity, diversity and inclusion concepts and social determinants of health, and ability to apply critical/structural analysis to understand the systemic barriers facing newcomer and racialized families in Toronto Relationship building skills with experience communicating with and engaging newcomers and diverse communities and stakeholders Comfort working and communicating with various levels of the organization including individuals in services (service users), family members, front-line service providers, managers, volunteers, community partners, and donors. 1 Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills, including ability to deliver information and presentations to diverse groups. Effective organizational skills, and an ability to prioritize and meet deadlines Strong team player with the ability to be flexible and self-motivated. Possess strong computer skills including experience with designing presentations, and knowledge of MS Office (especially Word, Outlook, Power Point and Excel). Any graphic design skills and software knowledge is an asset. Familiar with the City of Toronto and its diverse communities, ability to travel to different locations and find information and resources. Any additional language including bilingualism in English/French is an asset. RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Diversity Specialist and working collaborative with members of the Bridging Diversity Committee and external community partners, the Diversity and Outreach Assistant will be responsible for providing project support to outreach, research and community development activities aimed at improving access to Developmental Services for newcomer and ethnoculturally diverse families, including: Assisting with the implementation of research activities centered on immigrant families with children or adults with an intellectual disability; Collecting and summarizing data from the interviews, producing summary reports, blog entries and other communication materials as needed. Assisting with community outreach events, presentations and information sessions delivered to diverse ethno-cultural communities: organizing and promoting the event, engaging community organizations to increase attendance, documenting and narrating the activities for social media and organization’s newsletters. General administrative duties and on-line research as assigned. HOURS OF WORK: 30 hours per week (Some evenings and weekends (with notice) may be needed to accommodate community events.
