Invitation - Friends of Youth Outreach
You’re Invited…
Inaugural
Fundraiser for
Youth Outreach
T
he Youth Outreach House (YO House) in
- Waikiki has been in existence since 1989,
serving runaway, abused and neglected homeless
kids. The YO House offers hot meals, warm showers,
lockers, health care, education and employment
assistance, and a lot of aloha. However, the YO
house is a drop-in center only open a few hours a
week, and can’t offer a safe place to sleep. The kids
must leave at the end of the day and are back on
the streets at night. With the sweeps and the park
closures they turn to desperate survival skills.
It is essential that we create a shelter for their
safety. A place is needed where our homeless youth
can overcome their fear of abuse: a place where our
Keiki can be nurtured and helped educationally to
gain self-confidence in becoming independent, selfreliant citizens of our community. We need a place
for them to learn the skills to prevent a path toward
adult homelessness.
A
group of committed supporters realize how
urgently the Youth Outreach House needs
to be an overnight facility. The Friends of Youth
Outreach formed a committee, FOYO, to raise funds
for this purpose. Hawai‘i has the highest percentage
of homelessness in the country; 21% of them are
kids. Our dream is a permanent safe facility where
homeless youth can get a second chance in life. We
need to get them off the streets and stop the cycle of
homelessness.
