Gardening Club News - April
At our April meeting we
had ‘the other’ Paul
Newman talking about
ponds. He gave a brief
history of the
development and
decline of ponds in this
country and then gave
advice on how to
construct the best
wildlife pond. There was
plenty of free information leaflets - from which invasive plants to
avoid, to how to distinguish a toad from a frog. We found out that if
you have a great crested newt in your pond, don't bother applying for
planning permission within a 5 mile radius because, as they are a
protected species, you won’t get it.
The club also were made very welcome at Drayton plant nurseries,
who opened especially for us. We listened to an informative talk on
propagation and were able to buy plants at a discount.
Lastly we had an eye opening visit to Kelways Nursery at Langport,
where we were given a tour. The first thing we saw were 100 twelve
foot high olive trees, newly arrived from Spain, which are destined for
the first Islamic Garden at the Chelsea Show. This year Kelways are
providing plants for at least 8 of the gardens at Chelsea. We were
taken through one of the large poly tunnels to see a forest of exotic
tree ferns - Kelways are now the largest dealers of tree ferns in
Europe. We were also told they always grow 2 or 3 times what is
needed so on the Thursday of Chelsea week the plants not sent are
sold in their nursery. The trip to Malvern is full - sorry no seats left.
The next meeting of the Gardening Club is on Monday 1st June and
the subject is bedding plants.
Don’t forget the village show which is on Saturday 8th August. All
entry forms by the Thursday 6th August, except for the Creative
writing which should be in by the 6th July - title The Secret.

Compton Codgers Complete ‘Curie’ Challenge The Compton
Codgers recently completed their 5 kilometre swim in 2 hours & 32
minutes, raising more than a £1,300 for ‘Marie Curie’. Well done lads!

15th April
CDGS had a really
good day at Isle of
Wedmore course.
We were really lucky
with the weather and
all those who played
had a great day. The course was in lovely
condition and the meal and service afterwards was fantastic. It
was a nice touch from Wedmore to leave everyone a new ball and
ball marker, together with vouchers for use at the Club. Good to
see two new members, Rob Litston and Barry Morgan, together
with our “Forfeit Master” Chris Mitchell in attendance. We hope
we shall see Chris playing before too long, back permitting!

Our next Meeting is at Sherborne Golf Club on Wednesday 6th
May, with the first Tee reservation at 10.15 a.m. (Note this is
earlier than previously indicated). Sherborne is a lovely Club and
we look forward to seeing as many as possible at this Meeting.

The Photography Club The next meeting will be on Wednesday
20th May , in the Meadway Hall Meeting Room. The meeting will run
from 7.00 - 9.00 p.m.
The challenge for the May meeting is ‘Birds’ and, in
preparation, some members of the group arranged a visit to
Ham Wall in order to photograph bitterns, egrets and other
water birds. The club is for photographers of all abilities and
all are welcome.

The Annual Parish Meeting will be held at the Meadway Hall at
7:00 p.m. on Wednesday 6th May 2015. The main purpose is
to
enable registered electors to discuss parish affairs and to pass
resolutions This meeting is also an opportunity for the Council and
community group leaders to update the community about their
activities over the last year and outline plans for the future.
Anyone may attend the meeting but only registered electors in the
Village Volunteers During April, the village volunteers, spent a
morning clearing Les and Sheila’s orchard. A significant percentage of
this year’s ‘Dundon
Co-operative’ cider
was made using cider
apples donated by
Les and Sheila. Hugh
Thomas paved the
way for us by
bringing his
magnificent flailing
machine and saving
us hours of work.
Next month we will
continue to clear
cider orchards in our patch.
Charity Bring and Buy Plant Sale
at the Beacon
Saturday 23 May 10.30-12.30
Please save any extra seedlings, surplus
plants etc to bring on the day and come
along with your friends and family to
enjoy a cup of coffee, and maybe even a cake, and perhaps buy a
few more beautiful plants for your garden.
Women’s Refuge Appeal: A big thank you to
everyone who collected items for the Women’s
Refuge. The response to the appeal was heartwarming.

Highlights from the April Meeting
A "Funny thing happened to me at a Funeral" was the
theme for Clive Wakeley an undertaker from Yeovil who,
at the outset, stressed he had no wish to offend but
sometimes a little laughter at a funeral ceremony helps to deal with grief, and
everyone has their own way of dealing with sadness. Clive talked us through
many scenarios dealing with various types of coffins, modes of transport and
last minute requests. So many stories, but one highlight was the story of a lady
who had requested a cardboard coffin. This was in the days when
cardboard coffins were very primitive and in this case, Clive asked the
daughter of the deceased lady to come in and make sure the coffin he had
acquired was suitable. The daughter took one look at what was very
obviously a cardboard box and said "My mother would not be seen dead in
that!" Realising what she had said, they managed to stop laughing and in the
event,the daughter decorated the cardboard coffin and it was quite
presentable, so everyone's wishes were satisfied. Clive told of a little boy,
clutching his mother's hand, in the waiting room at the crematorium could not
take his eyes from Clive in all his regalia, top hat etc and said in a very loud
voice, "Look Mum there goes the Fat Controller". Clive has attended funerals
on the back of a high powered motorcycle where the deceased was a
motorcycle fanatic and one lady requested everyone stop on the way from
Bridport to Weymouth at a lay-by to consume an ice-cream from the ice-cream
van as this was something she always did when travelling the scenic coastal
route. Not only did the family eat ice-cream on the way to the crematorium,
they also called in, to the delight of the ice-cream man, on the way back,
hearses and funeral cars piling into the car park, much to the amazement of
passing motorists. Angela thanked Clive for his very amusing and comforting
talk. Many questions were asked, which Clive dealt with very competently.
There have been numerous requests for memorabilia, from County & National.
Wendy will compile records of the last 100 years - amusing anecdotes
especially welcome. Angela Castle and Susie Robertson will be going to the
Albert Hall for the National Federation Women's Institute Annual Meeting .
Janet and Wendy expressed an interest in going to the cinema at Yeovil to
watch the day unfold, live on screen June 4. Patricia Heap is our new
representative on the village hall committee.
The semi finals of the skittles competition will be played on 23rd April at The
Travellers Rest, East Pennard. Our opponents will be Buckland Dinham W I.
Women Walk the World. Meet at the Castlebrook car park on Tuesday 28th
April to walk around the village, returning to the Castlebrook, where mine host
has kindly donated sandwiches and chips. The charge for this walk is £2.50 .
All proceeds to ACWW.
September sees us celebrating 100 years of WI . The theme will be a Rainbow Party - ideas wanted please - watch this space. We will be entering a team
at the Group Quiz at Woolavington on 19th June. The competition for a
decorated egg was won by Corinne, second Janet Davis and Christina third.
The Flower of the Month winner was Janet Davis with tulips and hyacinths.

New Church Vestments.
Please join us on Sunday 7th June when a new
green altar frontal with matching vestments will
be dedicated in St. Andrews Church at 10 a.m.
This work was begun with a donation from Barry
Turnstall in memory of his wife Edith, Helen
Thomas' mother. Trish Cox is donating and
making the collection bags in memory of her son
Mathew and husband Chris. Others have also contributed in memory of
loved ones. The vestments have been designed and made by Helen
Richman, a very talented embroiderer, who trained at the Royal School
of Needlework. Helen’s talent is much in demand and we feel very
privileged that she agreed to take on this project. With the supervision of
Helen, some of the embroidery on the altar frontal has been worked by
local residents and is stunning and well worth seeing. We have enjoyed
our meetings together, in each others homes and have been delighted
and thrilled by the skills and talents that we have each developed. We
hope to continue with this project as several of the church vestments
need to be replaced. Any offers of help, either in talents you may have or
a financial contribution would be greatly appreciated.
The Vigil on the Centenary of the Gallipoli Campaign This
Vigil, held on Sunday, 19th April, was unforgettably beautiful, thoughtful
and thought-provoking; a religious service transcending its religious
framework. It was an occasion prompted by the operations of the
Australians and New Zealanders in the Dardanelles in 1915 and the
proximity of ANZAC Day on 25th April, which also took into account the
contributions of other Commonwealth countries. Here was eye-opening
history: on the contributions of the Canadians, of the Indian Army, of the
Americans, of the Irishmen of the South in the midst of their rebellion
and of the South Africans fresh from the Boer War but supporting the rest
of the Commonwealth. All diligently researched & skilfully presented. A
third of the evening was taken up by the music, memorable, solemn and
reflective, music by Fauré, Samuel Barber, John Rutter and by the Taizé
community and even an African Sanctus. The focus of the service was
increasingly on individuals: on the Canadian, who, before his death,
wrote the poem “In Flanders Fields”, on the Indian mother who wrote a
wonderful poem on losing her two sons to the war, on the American poet
who wrote “Rendezvous”, on the Diary of Signaller Ellis Elias and, finally,
on the story of ‘our own’ William Dawbin whose grave lies in our
churchyard. If you can get hold of a copy of the superbly crafted booklet
of the Vigil, you can see a photograph of Willie Dawbin’s grave and read
some of the fine pieces of writing presented there. You will also absorb
something of the sense of ‘the tears of things’ latent throughout.
