Last Saturday we held our May Fayre and thanks to Chris and Clare da Costa we all
enjoyed a fabulous afternoon in their garden and barn. The important news is that we
raised a grand total of £1,206.56!!
The bell ringing team were at the May Fayre raising funds and on the Sunday Dick
Collins gave a very illuminating and thoughtful sermon about the bells and our faith and
commitment.
We need to raise c£12,000 to have our bells overhauled. They have not been given a
'service' for fifty years so this sum is maybe not that much considering the work that
is required. We must stress that the bells are perfectly safe and will be ringing as and
when required but we need to have them overhauled ready for another fifty years
service. The work required equates to only £240 per year so maybe we must learn to
put some extra money aside to help our colleagues in fifty years time! We shouldn't
forget that our oldest bell dates from 1732 so there have been many years of service
and enjoyment in those six beautiful bells.
If you like to make a donation to the Bell Fund, big or small, tenor or treble, please
send your cheque to me made out to 'Corsley & Chapmanslade PCC' with a note making it
clear that the donation is for the Bell Fund.
Thank you everyone for your support and the success of the May Fayre and the Bell’s
appeal.

Our Friends in South Sudan
Dear friends
First, a special plea: many people in our Deanery seem to believe that, because the relationships
between our Diocesan Office and the Sudan Provincial Office are effectively frozen, the whole of the
Sudan Link has been suspended. Would you please be at pains to assure people (perhaps in
services, or in parish newsletters?) this is not so: the Medical Link and the Education Link are
working virtually as normal, and deanery-to-diocese links are unaffected. There is a lot to pray for, and
to fund-raise for!
Now the news. Fighting has escalated in the on-going civil war in South Sudan. The capital of Upper
Nile, Malakal, has been taken by rebel forces, as have a number of towns in the area - most
significantly Akoka, which is close to the vital oil fields of Paloich. Rebels have also shot down a
helicopter gunship of the Ugandan Air Force. They claim that hundreds of government troops have
defected, and there are credible reports that a senior commander of government troops has indeed
defected, taking with him a number of tanks and heavy guns.
Meanwhile fighting has also intensified in Unity State, and more people have fled to the UN Protection
Site in Bentiu - but this site has suffered repeated incursions by armed SPLA soldiers who attack
civilians, leading to robberies, kidnapping, rapes and 5 murders. Aid workers have had to evacuate
from the southern part of Bentiu. SPLA attacks elsewhere in Unity state have killed dozens of
children, raped at least 12 and abducted others, according to witnesses - whole villages have been
burned. The UN reports that 13,000 children have been recruited and are being used by all sides.
Pray urgently for their release
The latest report from OCHA shows that 2.5 million of the population face "severe food insecurity",
especially in Upper Nile, and this number is expected to increase. 2 million are displaced and depend
manly on food assistance. Even the British Government is now speaking up: James Duddridge,
Minister for African Affairs, has expressed extreme concern at the renewed fighting and subsequent
atrocities, and has called on the leaders to cease hostilities immediately. Pray that they would heed
this call.
The NGOs who are doing much of the feeding of the displaced are to be "regulated" by the South
Sudan Government: Parliament has passed a bill requiring all NGOs to re-register within three
months or cease operations. There will be new regulations, not yet published, and NGOs will be
required to ensure that at least 80% of their staff at every level (including managerial) are South
Sudanese. It is not clear how technically expert organisations such as MAF will be affected. Pray for
wisdom in the application of the new rules, so that humanitarian work is not obstructed.
Within Maridi Diocese, please pray for Bishop Justin on sabbatical, and for Canon Stanly and the
clergy of the Diocese; for Chaima Christian Institute, Principal Revd Atovura Martin, all staff and
students; and this week for Eddi Archdeaconry:
Ø Eddi Archdeaconry falls in the South east part of the Diocese bordering with Democratic Republic
of Congo (DRC).This Archdeaconry has much been affected by the activities of LRA.
Ø Pray for Archdeacon Gabriel Sebit, currently on sabbatical leave, and Revd. Ezekiya Darama,
acting for him, the pastors and Christians of the Archdeaconry as most of them were displaced by
LRA from their homes and villages and are now living near Maridi Town. Pray that as things
stabilise they may return to their own place.
The Sudan Garden Party (in the Bishop's Garden) is on June 7th, startign at 2.00 p.m. We have been
given lots of raffle tickets to sell, so if you could sell a few, do let me know.
