Metropolis Architecture is a professional firm that offers architectural, urban planning and interior

Our team has over 50 years of architectural experience across the design spectrum from residential
and commercial, to educational and ar ts-related projects with a special passion for the creation of
custom homes. We consistently push the creative and technological boundaries to innovate within
the client’s needs, providing the per fect melding of form and function. Regardless of style, the homes
that we design are responsive to the way our clients live ever y day, and are sensitive to historical
precedents and individual site considerations. They are both beautiful and practical with a careful
attention to detail.
Additionally, for nearly a decade our firm has been dedicated to tailoring the principles of sustainable
design to each individual project. In ever y aspect of development, from conceptual design to individual
specifications we analyze the best use of space, technology and materials to create places that are
visually inspiring in an environmentally positive manner. The incorporation of natural materials and
traditional construction methods with sustainable technologies creates homes that are both healthy
and tremendously durable.
Our Vision and Inspiration for The Glade At West End
This project is ver y personal for Metropolis Architecture as our offices are located in the same
neighborhood of West End.
We have designed The Glade at West End to seamlessly blend with the fabric of the historic West End
neighborhood. Each home’s exterior is designed to reflect appropriate historical architectural styles,
patterns, scales, building materials, and context. The interior designs will have comfor table living
and enter taining spaces that are both highly functional, featuring an array of modern amenities and
options. Home styles are intentionally varied so that The Glade will be consistent with the diversity of
architectural styles in West End. The Glade at West End site development is a model for responsible
neighborhood design that will tread lightly on the environment. The automobile access to the site will
mimic the smaller alleys that are scattered throughout West End. The site plan is designed to preser ve
as many trees as possible and add new trees as the overall site takes shape. Each home site will
feature spacious outdoor cour tyards and prominent porches that are characteristic of the West End
neighborhood, celebrating the site’s topography and the variety of splendid views to nearby homes
and Hanes Park in the distance. The homes are designed so that the interior and exterior porches flow
together in the manner of traditional West End homes. Although each home will be unique, they will
share the architectural language of West End and contribute to the neighborhood’s pedestrian scale,
its immeasurable variety, and its delightful charm.

Richard Alexander has been building and remodeling
in Winston-Salem’s finest neighborhoods since 1999.
A graduate of Clemson’s Construction Science and
Management program in the College of Architecture,
he possesses not only the technical exper tise but
the historic architectural knowledge to create and
blend sound structure with beautiful period details.
