The Freightliner Cascadia® Evolution with the Detroit Assurance™ suite of safety systems and
integrated Detroit™ Powertrain (iDP) showcases Daimler Trucks North America’s constant
pursuit to reduce Real Cost of Ownership (RCO) for its customers.
Freightliner Trucks understands that calculating overhead and what it really costs to run a
successful business in the trucking industry is different for every customer. RCO is a
comprehensive consideration of hard and soft costs over the lifetime of a vehicle. Some of the
costs are hard numbers such as diesel expenses; and others, such as driver turnover rates and
customer loyalty, are a bit more difficult to express in dollars and cents. Freightliner helps lower
customers’ Real Cost of Ownership with industry-leading technology, such as the Cascadia
Evolution with Detroit Assurance and the iDP.
The Cascadia Evolution features a number of leading technologies aimed at improving
profitability for fleets and owner/operators. Exterior aerodynamic features on the Cascadia
Evolution were developed using Daimler Truck North America’s state-of-the-art wind tunnel in
Portland, Ore. In addition, the truck was extensively tested in real-world conditions on highways
across the United States, undergoing nearly 3 million miles in reliability and fuel economy
testing.

Freightliner Trucks developed RCO to recognize five main factors for the on-highway segment to
maximizing profitability: fuel efficiency, safety, uptime, connectivity and quality.
Fuel Efficiency
Equipped with the latest version of the Detroit DD15® engine and some of the most
aerodynamic enhancements in the industry, the Cascadia Evolution produces an additional 7
percent improvement in fuel economy over an EPA 2010-compliant Cascadia equipped with a
first-generation aerodynamic package. Taking integration to the next level with the integrated
Detroit Powertrain, the Cascadia Evolution can earn up to an additional 7 percent improvement
in certain applications with the 6x2 configuration.
With the iDP, the engine, transmission and axles are engineered and designed to work together
as one. Coupled with cutting-edge technologies, advanced component communication and onestop parts and service support, the iDP delivers real profits.
By integrating Detroit’s fast tandem axle ratios and the smooth-shifting DT12™ transmission
with electronics calibrated to deliver greater horsepower and torque at lower RPMs, the DD15
engine keeps trucks in top gear more often and cruises at a more efficient engine speed. A sixblade cooling fan also reduces power draw without sacrificing cooling capabilities. The DT12
transmission features Intelligent Powertrain Management (IPM), which uses terrain maps to
know the route ahead and adjust transmission and engine functions for optimized fuel economy.
The 6x2 single drive axle with non-driven tag axle configuration reduces total weight by
approximately 380 pounds. The 6x2 axle is integrated with the downsped torque curve and a
direct-drive transmission to deliver better fuel economy regardless of cruise speed. A highperformance 6x4 tandem axle configuration is available for applications requiring superior
traction.
The integrated Detroit Powertrain also features state-of-the-art Detroit steer axles that provide a
55-degree wheel cut for remarkably nimble maneuverability and employs needle bearings as
opposed to bushings for increased durability.
Safety
From a safety standpoint, the Cascadia and Cascadia Evolution offer more than 36 optional
safety features and boast an ergonomically designed, noise-limiting cab that meets European
and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements. Steering wheel airbags
and LifeGuard Rolltek® seats help protect drivers in case of an accident.
Detroit Assurance is a suite of safety systems that provide three distinct features, allowing
exceptional control and safety on the open road. The first feature, Active Brake Assist, will first
audibly and visually warn the driver of a potential unsafe distance to the lead vehicle, then
provide partial braking using throttle control, engine brakes if needed, then proceed to use
foundation brakes if the driver is not responding to the first two warnings. The second feature,
Adaptive Cruise Control, will maintain a safe following distance based on vehicles ahead of or
entering the truck’s path. The third feature is an optional Lane Departure Warning system that
tracks the truck’s position in the lane, and provides audible warnings if a line is crossed without
using the turn signal indicator.
Uptime & Connectivity
Standard on the Cascadia and Cascadia Evolution, the Detroit Virtual Technician™ onboard
diagnostic system helps increase uptime and decrease maintenance costs by providing real-time
engine diagnostics. The system enables drivers and fleet managers to quickly and accurately
evaluate engine and transmission warning lights, and in many cases figure out a solution while
the truck is still being driven. It also minimizes time in the shop by almost eliminating diagnostic
delays since this is completed by the Detroit customer support center before the truck even
arrives.
