The arts, it has been said, cannot change the world, but they may change human beings who might change the world. Maxine Greene Del ta ARTS Educator Wo r k s h o p Based on the Lincoln Center Aesthetic Education Model The design and content of the DeltaARTS Educator Workshop offers educators an opportunity to gain skills in implementing the Lincoln Center aesthetic education inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. This research-based approach is initially rooted in the study of works of art and employs four main concepts: art-making, questioning, reflection, and contextual research. Educators have the opportunity to unlock their own imaginative learning, while engaging with works of art with master aesthetic education teaching artists. This participatory experience will inspire teachers to stimulate creative conceptual thinkers prepared for the world beyond the classroom. Champion Trees by Linda Williams Palmer In this exhibit 18 large colored-pencil drawings of Arkansas’ champion trees resemble oversized botanical drawings. While the artist is attentive to genus and species, Palmers’ ultimate goal was to interpret each champion according to the season of observation, location, historic context and human connection. Curricular connections to history, science, and natural resources will be explored during the workshop. Workshop Leaders Anne Davey Lead Facilitator Visual Artist Sarah Ledbetter Dance Teaching Artist Leandria Smith Drama Teaching Artist Comments from past participants . . . “The DeltaARTS facilitators used a discovery method. It was not a lecturing workshop, but an engaging one, excellent in modeling and actually working us through creating a lesson using the line of inquiry.” –Jacqueline Duckworth, Language Arts, L. R. Jackson Elementary, West Memphis, AR “It was a magical journey — especially in selfexploration with the amazing instructors and art work and art-making.” –Mimi Hurley, Creativity Specialist, Hutchison School, Memphis, TN “A great an aesthetic approach, with total student involvement and hands on participation in order to bring science, history, language arts, and the arts to life. I came out of the week with a ‘vision statement’ for my own teaching.” –Barry Bates, Marion Intermediate, Marion, AR
