The Pius X Ambassadors celebrated our
annual "We Rise by Lifting Others Week"
from March 14-18. The week involved
themes and activities motivating students to
respect and uplift all people. Music played
throughout the school in between classes
and faculty and students were encouraged to
share kindness in all forms from compliments to fist bumps. The windows in the
Commons were used to write uplifting messages of thanks to classmates and teachers.

All Spanish 4 students were required to write a children's book
in Spanish with a positive message geared toward elementary
aged students. After presenting the books in class, the class voted on its favorite books and their authors were chosen to visit
elementary classes in Lincoln.

Blood Donations Contribute to Scholarships
- submitted by Susan Kelly -
Courtesy of Newspaper
Courtesy of Susan Kelly
The Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCCB) offers Pius X an
educational scholarship award based on the success of the 201516 Pius X blood drives. The blood drives are sponsored by the
Pius X Student Council. Every pint of blood collected in the
name of Pius X during the school year adds to the scholarship
amount. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, Pius X must
register at least 60 donors for each blood drive. The donations
must occur at the Pius X blood drive.
Special thanks to all the Pius X students, staff, family, and
friends who rolled up their sleeve to save lives and earn scholarship dollars for Pius X on Tuesday, March 15. There were 30
new donors. Pius X donated 90 units of blood earning $880 in
scholarship dollars for Pius X students this school year.
Courtesy of Newspaper
Since 2004, the Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB) has
awarded funding to high schools across the area based on the
success of blood drives held throughout the school year. The
mission of the program is based on one of NCBB’s seven core
values: community spirit. High school blood drives not only help
to save lives, they help educate students on the importance of
blood donation, teach leadership and teamwork skills, and encourage community involvement. Visit www.ncbb.org for more
information.
Let’s make the next blood drive successful and have the 60 donors needed to be scholarship eligible. Mark your calendars for
the next blood drive at Pius X coming in October 2016!
The Student Council is sponsored by Susan Kelly and Brianna
Golka.

Lenten Services
- submitted by Molly Milana -
During the season of Lent, Pius X students and staff came together for
five Lenten services. These special prayer services reminded us of the
importance of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection, and encouraged the
school to renew our lives in Christ.
Our theme this year was the Sunday Gospels of Lent. Each week, we
reflected on the upcoming Gospel so that we might more fully enter into
the Mass and the Word during Lent.

Pius Players Present the Musical “Brigadoon”
Courtesy of Yearbook
Congratulations to the extraordinarily talented cast and crew on their spectacular
production of Lerner and Loewe's classic "Brigadoon" that opened on Thursday,
March 17, with the first of four shows. "Brigadoon" tells the story of two world
weary 1940's Americans finding themselves lost in the Highlands of Scotland. When they accidentally stumble upon an eighteenth century Scottish village,
the Americans discover it is a magically preserved town that appears out of the
Scottish mist only once every 100 years. Brigadoon is a beautiful place where life
is simpler, easier, and untouched by the worries and negative influences of the
modern world. The hero of the story, Tommy Albright (Thomas Fulton), falls for
the lovely villager Fiona MacLaren (Emma Finder) and must decide whether to
stay in Brigadoon forever or return to his American life in New York City.

On Wednesday, March 23, Pius X students in Accelerated Physics and AP Physics (PACE) participated in the 23nd annual Pius

depicted complicated machines that performed simple tasks.
In this spirit, 15 teams of students built machines that had to, in

Senior Retreat Day | Monday, April 4
- submitted by Molly Milana The senior class of 2016 participated in their final Pius X annual
retreat on Monday, April 4. All seniors spent the day in prayer
and adoration, receiving the sacraments, and reflecting both on
their time at Pius and on preparing for life after high school. The
day began with the entire senior class at St. Thomas Aquinas
Newman Center and an opening talk by 2008 Pius graduate,
Kelby Meyers.
Courtesy of Yearbook
During the morning, students had the opportunity to reflect on
their last four years of high school and how that time had shaped
them. Each student received the letters they had written to themselves as freshmen and were given time to reflect on how they
might have changed and who played an important role in their
growth. Students also attended a beautiful holy hour and had the
opportunity to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation.
After lunch, the boys and girls went to separate locations for
their afternoon speakers. This split was meant to symbolize the
separation from their senior class after graduation and the excitement of new beginnings. As such, the afternoon was spent reflecting on what is to come after high school, how to continue
living and growing in the faith, and how to take the many lessons learned from Pius and Catholic education into the next part
of their lives. The speakers for the girls were Mrs. Mary Odgaard and Ms. Anne Driewer. The speakers for the boys were Fr.
Justin Fulton and Mr. John Hyland. Each of the speakers shared
themselves and their stories with the students to help guide the
seniors as they continue to grow in their faith after they leave
Pius.
Courtesy of Yearbook
Finally, the entire senior class joined together at the end of the
day for Mass. The students were reminded that no matter where
they go after graduation, they will always be united to one another in the Holy Eucharist and they should draw strength from
Jesus Christ.
Thank you to the faculty retreat leaders, priests, speakers, and
volunteers who helped make this retreat possible, especially the
choir from the UNL Newman Center that provided music for
holy hour and Mass. We would also like to thank each of the
parents who donated to our retreat fund and prayed for the success of the retreat. We could not have done it without you. God
bless you!

Key Club’s Trick or Treat Project
The award for the Language Teacher of the Year is intended to
elevate the status of the language teaching profession at the
state, regional, and national levels by creating opportunities for
recognizing the most accomplished members of the profession.
The Teacher of the Year becomes a spokesperson for the language profession in order to increase the visibility of the importance of learning languages and cultures to the general public.
“CSCTFL is very proud of the impact that the Teacher of the
Year Program has had in bringing local, regional, and national
attention to the importance of language education for all students. It is an excellent example of collaboration in our field
from the state to the regional to the national level,” said Mary
Goodwin, CSCTFL’s Awards Chair. Goodwin continued: “We
congratulate Katie Hayes as an advocate in her community for
language learning, serving as a fine example of superior teaching
and sharing her expertise with colleagues through quality professional development opportunities.”

Thunderettes Support Sports & Community
- submitted by Haley Kotopka The Pius X Thunderette Dance Team has been very busy this
year. They started off the summer at the Universal Dance Association’s 4-day summer camp in Omaha where they received
several honors, awards, trophies, and ribbons for their performances. In August, they hosted a kids’ dance camp and performed an entertaining routine with the two combined teams at
the Pius X Fall Kick Off. They danced for football and volleyball in the fall, as well as at basketball in the winter. The teams
again came together to perform at the annual Northeast High
School Exhibition just before Thanksgiving. Besides their regular game-day activities, they participated in volunteer activities
too.

Dear Pius X Family & Friends,
BOLT 2016 Coordinating Committee
Courtesy of Kristin (Edwards) Heath ’91
We want to thank all of you for your generous support of Pius X
High School and BOLT 2016 “Unveil the Potential”. Our event
was a great success and could not have happened without you.
There are many volunteers who gave of their time, talent, and
treasure to make this event the success it is today including parent volunteers and numerous students who sold lottery tickets,
conducted the bid run, assisted with clean-up, and sang at the
Mass prior to BOLT. The support from the Pius X High School
faculty and staff was tremendous as well.
One of our goals is to provide a great environment for all of our
students by aiding in renovations of the physical facility of Pius
X High School and support of the Pius X Booster Club. Keeping
this in mind, one-third of the proceeds will fund the Booster
Club’s special projects while two-thirds of the proceeds will finance improvements to the physical facility.

We know that we had a very successful event and would like to
share that success with you. We are still working through the
numbers and will make a final report in the June/July newsletter.

The remainder was invested in the Pius

school year (2016-17), more than
$617,000 will be distributed along with
an additional $200,000 to improve
teacher salaries. This support of the
school’s operating budget is possible only through your generous support of the Fund for Pius X.

Any incoming senior football player can apply by writing a brief
essay relating how their faith and experience as a student athlete

Give To Lincoln Day – Thursday, May 26
- submitted by Deb Hoge Did you know that Pius X’s enrollment this year
reached 1,225 - the highest enrollment in school
history? Next year’s enrollment is expected to
surpass 1,270.
As Pius X continues to grow, your help is needed to retain our outstanding teachers, recruit additional high-quality faculty, and better accommodate our increased enrollment. This year, our Give To Lincoln Day
goal is $175,000. You may donate online from Sunday, May 1, through

Pius X teacher and 1999 alumna Mrs. Katie (Reinsch) Hayes was recently
honored for her passion and ingenuity in the classroom. She earned distinction
as the 2015 Nebraska Language Teacher of the Year. She and her husband
Britt, a 2000 graduate, are expecting their fifth child.
Your gift, combined with the support of hundreds of others, will build
toward a financial plan that fairly compensates teachers for their dedication and investment in the faith and character development of Pius X

Your donation will also help Pius X once again claim a share of the
$300,000 challenge match pool of funds offered by the Lincoln Community Foundation and the Give To Lincoln Day sponsors. Last year,
thanks to the generosity of so many, Pius X raised more than $142,000
including almost $13,000 from the matching challenge grant.
Would you also help us spread the word? F acebook, Tweet, or email

For more than 30 years, Mr. Ray Forycki has embodied the qualities and values found in the Pius X faculty who serve students both inside and outside of
the classroom.
Your tax-deductible donation of any size – from $10 to $10,000 – is
very generous and needed. Your gift will ensure that Pius X retains and
recruits the best teachers possible and will create a positive learning
environment for all of our students. Thank you for your faithful support
of Pius X and our mission to provide a Christ-centered education to the
Lincoln community!
Give by Check
Check donations must be made out to the Lincoln Community
Foundation with Pius X Foundation listed in the memo line. We
must receive all checks at Pius X by 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 26,
to qualify for a share of the matching gift fund. Simply mail your
check to 6000 A St., Lincoln, NE 68510; hand-deliver your check
to Pius X; or call us and we can pick-up your check from your
home or business.
Secured Pledge
You do not need to wait until May 26. You may make a donation
beginning May 1 and your gift will be held and applied to Pius X’s
total on May 26. This is a great way to ensure that you won’t get
busy and forget to give. Just go to www.givetolincoln.com.

The core values of a Christ-centered education allow Pius X students to thrive
within a community that cultivates growth in academics and activities.
Donation Booster
You can boost the amount Pius X receives from your donation by
choosing the Donation Booster option. This will increase your donation to cover the processing fees that Pius X will pay. It’s a small
amount, but when added up will make a huge difference. On a $50
gift, this would add $3.25 to your donation.

arship will inspire young adults to embrace Dianne’s angelic
journey, always sharing how Christ loves us and wants us to
share kindness, hope, joy, and happiness.”
Dianne Marie Sizemore celebrated life on earth from October
13, 1958, until December 31, 2015. She was born in Berlin, Wisconsin, and grew up in Grand Island, Nebraska, where she graduated from Grand Island Central Catholic High School. Dianne
attended the University of Nebraska where she met her future
husband Jim. They have two daughters, Julie Marie and Annie
Leigh. Both were born in Lincoln, attended Catholic grade
school, and graduated from Pius X High School.
During the last seven years, Dianne’s extraordinary journey as
an ordinary Catholic was especially inspirational. Through her
own pain and suffering, she set a powerful example for others,
showed generosity, displayed her Catholic faith, and supported
the people and causes important to her. Her cancer journey inspired many who witnessed her resolve to celebrate each day as
a miracle.
“Dianne changed sadness to joy by reminding us of our faith and
Christ’s love,” Jim shared in a biography outlining Dianne’s life.
“She often reminded us to share joy and happiness and not sympathy and grief. Dianne loved life.”
Quick to volunteer when asked, Dianne always said yes. She
dedicated her life to helping others find Christ’s love and believed Christ guided her to be a servant for others without fanfare. The Make-A-Wish Foundation and GodTeens were two
examples of her infinite kindness and how her enduring love
provided inspiration to embrace one’s God-given talents. Dianne
shared many years granting wishes. She loved bringing great
happiness through a wish and she mourned with the family when
a child passed away. Dianne proudly celebrated her GodTeen
kids’ achievements, always serving as their biggest cheerleader.
Dianne also shared her many talents at Blessed Sacrament
Church. She led the Home and School Association, many fund
raisers, and weekly bingo. At Pius X, she volunteered for BOLT
and led the auction team for several years. Dianne’s other favorCourtesy of the Pius X Foundation

Scholarships
- http://www.piusx.net/vnews/display.v/SEC/Development/Support|Scholarships Thanks to the generosity of many donors, Pius X will award more than
$62,000 in scholarships to students for
the 2015-2016 school year. Establishing
a named scholarship gives you the opportunity to honor and remember loved
ones while actively supporting Pius X’s quality, Catholic education. Once a named scholarship is created, the funds are invested
in the Foundation’s endowment with the income from the investment being used to help pay a portion of students’ tuition.
Named scholarships last forever and serve as a permanent memorial. This means you can financially assist current as well as
future students for many years to come. As the scholarship balance increases, so does the amount of aid students receive.

A “TINI” Fact
Sunshine is the best source of Vitamin D, but remember your
sun screen.
Choose Healthy Fats
- submitted by Tini Van-Oehlertz, M.S., R.D. Fat is a nutrient necessary for your health. While various fats in
foods have different effects on health, some fats offer health
protective benefits. Consider including foods with these fats, in
moderation, to your meals.
Omega-3 Fats
Omega-3 fatty acids are
a type of polyunsaturated
fatty acids that may help
lower cholesterol levels
and support heart health.
What to Eat
Fatty Fish: Current dietary recommendations are to include fish
in your meals at least twice a week. Fish high in Omega-3 Fats
are salmon, albacore tuna (fresh and canned), sardines, lake
trout, and mackerel.
Walnuts: Walnuts are rich in vitamin E and an excellent plantbased source of Omega-3 Fats. Add walnuts to cereal, salads, or
muffins. Try walnut oil in salad dressings and sautés too.
All Vegetable Oils: Replace solid fats such as butter or margarine with oils when cooking or baking. It works well for sautéing
and stir-frying.
Flaxseed: Add ground flaxseed to breakfast cereal, yogurt, and
baked goods including breads, muffins, mixed dishes, and casseroles. Or, drizzle flaxseed oil over quinoa or use it for salad
dressing (your body cannot break down whole flaxseeds to access the Omega-3 containing oil).
Eggs: Some chickens are given feed that is high in Omega-3
Fats so their eggs will contain more as well. When buying eggs,
check the package label.
Monounsaturated Fats
Monounsaturated fats improve
blood cholesterol levels which
can decrease your risk of heart
disease.
What to Eat
Nuts: In addition to hearthealthy fats, nuts are a good
source of protein, fiber, and a
variety of vitamins and minerals.
Just keep portion control in
mind. One portion of nuts is
equal to 1 ounce or 1/3 cup and
provides 160 to 180 calories.
Oils: Use oils in place of saturated fat such as butter. Use it in
salad dressing or to sauté vegetables, seafood, poultry, and meat.
Avocados: Avocados not only contain monounsaturated fat but
they are also packed with Folate, Vitamins E, Vitamin C, and
Vitamin B6, Potassium, and fiber. Try adding avocado to salad,
pizza, soup, salsa, eggs, and sandwiches.
Peanut Butter: Nearly half the fat in peanut butter is monounsaturated fat. Resist the urge to pour off the heart-healthy oil
that’s separated out of natural peanut butter. Instead, mix it in.
