DEXTER - The 5th Annual Amy, Coty, Monica Memorial 5K Race/
Walk and Vendor Fair to End Domestic Violence in Maine will be held
on Saturday, June 13 at Dexter Regional High School, 12 Abbott Hill
Road, Dexter. Day of registration will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.
and the Runners will start promptly at 9 a.m. with walkers following.
The route for the race this year will be the same as last year which
seems fitting since it was almost in the shape of a domestic violence
ribbon. They will have an electronic timing for runners provided by
RuninaRace.com. There will be rewards for top Sponsor collectors as
well as for Top Adult Male and Female winners and Top Student Male
and Female winners. Anyone may register online at www.runinarace.
com/ACMMemorial5K or print the form from this website and mail it
in at the address listed.
This year will be the 3rd year they have a Vendor/Craft Fair as part
of the event. Many great Crafters and Vendors are already lined up
and they expect to have many more. There will be free ice cream for
everyone provided by the Darling’s Ice Cream Truck as well as goodies for sale and a whoopie pie table.
There are scholarships available for AOS 94 students who wish to
participate in the event but are not financially able to do so. Contact

details or to sponser this event.

4:30 - 6 p.m. at the Dover-Foxcroft
Congregational Church which is
located 824 West Main Street in
Dover-Foxcroft. The GSFB Food
Mobile is open to anyone in need
of food assistance in the greater
Piscataquis region. There are no
forms required for the food mobile. Bring your own bags and/or
boxes. The food mobile is sponsored by Doree Taylor Foundation and the Dover-Foxcroft Area

Cupboard is group of community members, businesses and
non-profits working together
to assist families and individuals with their food needs. The

LOVE OFFERING FOR LOGAN BAGLEY - Living Word Assembly of God recently took up a love offering
for Logan Bagley. Logan is a 17 year old young man who has been diagnosed with a form of lymphoma
cancer. He and his family have to make regular trips to Portland for his treatments. Pastor Charles Scott
presented the check to Quentin Clark (a relative of Logan Bagley). Through the Jerusalem Fund ministry
that is taken up each month to help with special needs in the community, Living Word Assembly of God
was able to help Logan and his family make the trips to Portland for his much needed treatments.

Brownville Free Public Library
offers “Let’s Talk About It”
BROWNVILLE - The Brownville Free Public Library has
been selected by the Maine Humanities Council to offer “Let’s
Talk About It”, a free reading and
discussion group with copies of
books available through the library. This program is provided
by the Maine Humanities Council’s Maine Center for the Book in
cooperation with the Maine State
Library.
The series Refreshing the Whodunit, begins 6 p.m., May 20 at the
Brownville Free Public Library in
Brownville, and continues for 5
sessions, through June 17.
Books to be read and discussed
in this series include: The Beekeeper’s Apprentice by Laurie
King, Dance Hall of the Dead by
Tony Hillerman, The Skull Mantra by Eliot Pattison, A Cold Day
for Murder by Dana Stabenow,
Murder at the Nightwood Bar by
Katherine V. Forrest. A scholar
provided by the Maine Humanities Council will facilitate the discussions.
“Exploring ideas and issues
through literature has a unique
and fun way of creating community,” said Nicole Rancourt, director of Let’s Talk About It. “We find
that there is great interest among
adults in getting together to discuss what they’ve read with others. Having a discussion leader
who is both excited about the
readings and skilled in facilitating can help to deepen this experience.”
Books for the program are
available for loan at the library.

OPINION:
Is it democracy or is it bullying?

English philosopher Herbert Spencer is credited with saying that a man’s liberties are none the less aggressed because those who coerce him do so in the belief that he will be benefited. For as long as I’ve been
alive there have been laws that served no purpose other than to coerce one set of people to do or not do
something another group rationalized was ‘for their own good’. Specifically, I recall blue laws, movie censor
boards, and remnants of prohibition in the form of dry towns, rules that made it an offense to carry my beer
from one table to another, and green front liquor stores that closed before people got off work on weekdays
and at noon on Saturday.
The activists of yesteryear predominantly relied on twisted Christian principles to rationalize blue-nosed
bullying. They have faded into obscurity and I suspect nobody much misses them. That they have been replaced by another collection of loud, abusive, and equally insidious bullies should trouble us all.
America is not a democracy and that is because our founders knew a democracy inevitably leads to the
tyranny of mob rule as bullies cobble a ‘majority’ that enables them to impose their will on a minority. In the
words of one of today’s worst bullies (GQ Correspondent Ana Marie Cox): “We have to force people to do things
they don’t want to do”. We can assert that social issues today are different than those our grandparents faced
but that’s just pretense. We have unresolved matters of race and sexuality. We have people who lie, cheat and
steal. We have sociopaths who see themselves, their wants, and their ideas as more legitimate than others’.
Fundamentally, these issues have been with us throughout recorded history and we’ve never resolved them.
Hopefully there’s no need to establish that America holds ‘discrimination’ to be wrong. However, just as the
blue-nosed bullies of yesteryear perverted Christian principles, today’s bullies have perverted ‘discrimination’ to extend it to situations where feigned injury or offense is used to bring court cases that impose their
twisted ideas. It’s time for us to grow up, put on big person underwear, and deal with a world that isn’t our
mommy. Others will dislike us, decline to accept our values, dispute our ideas, and express disapproval of our
behavior. Cowboy up folks, that is not a cause to sue them, shut down their business, or destroy their property. Nobody owes us compensation for being disappointed or special privileges and favored status because
our choices have not produced our fantasized results.
Only the uninformed or disingenuous insist that we have the intellect and wisdom to obliterate every inequality of opportunity and outcome, every cause of offense, every bruised ego, and every frustrated objective
and doing so would be discrimination. We’ve seen vicious hate speech rationalized as fighting ‘discrimination’
in the Memories Pizza debacle. We’ve heard Eric Holder opine that proving racial discrimination according
to law was too high a bar because, after all, we all know it when we see it.
Americans will not like the result if we don’t stand up to modern day bullies. We all deplore discrimination but we owe it to each other to be very specific about the behaviors we prohibit. Hopefully none support
“weaponizing” government to coerce others ‘for their own good’. Before we let discrimination be legislated
or litigated, we should insist the law and the legal standards be specific and widely approved. If we seek to
avoid the excesses of the past, we should insist very little discretion be left to courts that, in the final analysis,
choose who to discriminate against based on something as vague as a ‘preponderance of the evidence’.

Senior Matters:
Safety and Security

We live in an era of sound bites and catchy phrases, but do we know what they all mean? Lately we have
been reading and hearing a lot about a “grey tsunami” and how to make our communities and lives better
for older adults. We have heard about “Thriving in Place,” “Senior-friendly communities,” “Healthy Aging,”
“Aging in Place,” and I have used some of these phrases in this column. I recently realized that these phrases
may be just heard as slogans without real meaning by some listeners, so I am writing the next three columns
to explore the ideas behind the words.
As a geriatrics specialist who sees mostly old and very old patients in their homes I have seen first hand
some of the components of aging that need to be addressed to help people to stay at home and live well as
they age. “Healthy aging” requires safety, security, maintenance of good health, support from friends, family
and community, and connectedness.
Safety and security are basic to all the other elements. Without them who can be said to be “thriving?”
Safety refers not only to personal circumstances and behaviors that avoid injury such as driving only as long
as you can see, respond and make appropriate decisions, or not climbing on stools in your home, but also to
having adequate heat in your home, adequate food and not being exploited by others or abused. When safety
is not assured, health and well-being are impossible. Likewise, security refers to a person’s ability to count
on personal, physical and financial safety.
In Piscataquis County over 20% of people over age 65 live in poverty. If Mary, my 93 year old patient, is
living in a cold, 2 room apartment wrapped in blankets with only wilting vegetables and cereal to eat (despite having a daughter who is her POA providing food), it does no good for me to try to treat her high blood
pressure or recommend she have therapy or exercise. While medical professionals, community services for
the elderly and social service providers work to identify and remedy unsafe situations for older adults, politicians continue to discuss “cutting” supports for home heating assistance, nutritional programs, payment for
in home services, and elder law attorney services, and many of the most unsafe elders in our communities
remain unidentified and unsupported. If we are to have healthy, aging communities, it is imperative that
our social and political structures continue to place high priority on safety. Mary needs heat and adequate
nutrition or the best intentions of the community to “engage her in living” will be unsuccessful.
As previously mentioned in this column, the Thriving in Place project is working to identify people who
lack the safety and security to be able to “thrive” and to find solutions to such problems. We are depending
on the partnership of neighbors, friends and others in the community to make these efforts successful. If you

DEXTER - Attendees of the Skelton Crew meeting at Dexter’s Abbott Memorial Library on May 1st enjoyed an informative and delightful presentation by Linda Tisdale, local herbalist, about herbs
and foods beneficial for bone health.
Addressing eleven interested women from surrounding towns.
Linda stressed a diet that includes calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, and vitamins A, C, and D at adequate levels to increase calcium
absorption and maintain hormone levels of calcitonin and estrogen,
which play a significant role in good bone health. Just “a slight drop
in blood calcium levels can stimulate a release of calcium from the
bones, disrupt the absorption of calcium from the intestines, and influence calcium loss in the urine,” Linda reported. Without a continuous calcium/mineral/vitamin rich diet, bones can deteriorate. The
vital importance of magnesium to stimulate the hormone calcitonin
to increase calcium within the bones was emphasized. A calciummagnesium ratio of 2-1 was suggested.
Several herbs used as tea or as tincture are good sources of calcium,
magnesium, vitamins and other important minerals. Herbs especially for calcium support are alfalfa, horsetail, oatstraw, raspberry leaf,
nettle leaves, parsley, lamb’s quarters, and dandelion leaves. “Many
of these plants can be found growing here either wild or in gardens.
They can be picked and dried for later use,” Linda told her listeners.
Herbs especially for estrogenic hormone balancing are black cohosh,
dong quai, wild yam, raspberry leaves, and chaste berry. Tea recipe
specifics were made available to event participants, while tinctures
are available from Linda by calling her at 924-5172. She can advise
anyone as to how to use the tinctures.
Although supplements in capsule form might be helpful, Linda
feels, as many others in the field of nutrition do, that it is better to get
as many of your vitamins and minerals from good food sources. Many
foods high in calcium also contain adequate amounts of the magnesium to satisfy the absorption requirement. These foods include dried
beans, soybeans and soy products, some whole grains, seeds and nuts,
dark green leafy vegetables, and sea vegetables.
Linda gave the group a list of foods with calcium as well as a list
of calcium inhibitors. Coffee, soda, diuretics, protein excess, refined
sugar excess, intoxicants, excess salt, too little or too much exercise,
and foods in the nightshade family, such as tomatoes and peppers,
and those with oxalic acid, such as beet greens and spinach, inhibit
calcium absorption. “The nutritious vegetables on the inhibitor list
should be eaten in moderation,” she advised.
The group was treated to delicious dulce and kale chips prepared
by the speaker, who also shared the recipes with everyone. Cannellini
hummus and freshly brewed bone-healthy tea, favorites of the group,
were also served.
Next month’s meeting will be on June 5th at noon when members
will meet to share ways in which they are supporting their own bone
health and to decide on possible speakers for the coming months.

Reunion planned Aug. 1
HARTLAND - Plans are underway for the regular five-year reunion
of the graduates and attendees of Hartland Academy. The last graduating class of Hartland Academy was in 1968 and reunions have been
held in five-year intervals since.
All classes, including graduates and non-graduates, are invited to
gather at the Irving Tanning Community Center ( Hartland Consolidated School) on Elm Street in Hartland on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015.
The doors will open at 10 a.m. and lunch will be at noon. Everyone
is encouraged to bring their favorite finger foods to share. A meeting
of all alumni will follow lunch.

DEXTER KIWANIS MEETS AT TCTC - Dexter Sunrise Kiwanis met at the Tri
County Tech Center on May 1. The breakfast was prepared by the students of the
culinary arts program and the speaker for the meeting was Chris Whitman who is
the program instructor. He spoke about the ice sculptures he does for weddings and
other events in the area. One of his former students, Beth Harding, is currently a student at Le Cordon Bleu in Boston. Beth did a cake decorating demonstration and the
cake was raffled off and was won by Kiwanis member Shelley Watson pictured above.
Lizotte receives doctorate in Immunology
DOVER-FOXCROFT - Patrick H. Lizotte received his Ph.D. in Immunology from the
Microbiology and Immunology Graduate Program at the Geisel School of Medicine at
Dartmouth College on April 28, following the successful defense of his doctoral thesis.
Dr. Lizotte, son of Tom and Leslie Lizotte of Dover-Foxcroft, is a 2002 graduate of
Foxcroft Academy, where he was class valedictorian. He earned his undergraduate
degree from Colby College, magna cum laude, with majors in Biology and History in
2006.
Following graduation from Colby, Lizotte worked for four years as a laboratory
technician in Cambridge, Mass., at The Broad Institute, a biomedical research facility operated in a partnership between Harvard University and the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. He began graduate school at Dartmouth in 2010 after being
selected for a fellowship that provided him with a full-tuition scholarship and annual
stipend throughout the five years of his studies and laboratory research in the school’s
Molecular and Cellular Biology Program.
At Dartmouth, Lizotte’s course work included biochemistry, cell and molecular biology genetics, immunology, and molecular pathogenesis. In recent years, his laboratory
research was conducted at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock
Medical Center under the supervision of Professor Steven N. Fiering, whose lab develops novel immune-based strategies for treating cancer. Dartmouth’s medical school
was established in 1797 and is the fourth-oldest in America.
Maines recognized with Student Art Exhibition awards
ABBOT - Benjamin Maines of Abbot, a member of the Colby-Sawyer College 2018
majoring in Media Studies, was recently recognized with a pair of awards.
The Tomie dePaola Whitebird Paper Award was presented to Maines at the 42nd
Annual Gladys Greenbaum Meyers ‘39 Juried Student Art Exhibition on April 2.
Sponsored by the renowned artist, children’s author and former Colby-Sawyer faculty
member, the award honors students’ achievements in drawing, watercolor, painting,
graphic design and printmaking.
Also that day, he was presented with the Jessica Jacobs Award named in honor of
former Colby-Sawyer College Professor of Fine and Performing Arts Jessica Jacobs, the
award recognizes the “Best in Show in Photography.”

Historical societies take on planning for the annual
Memorial Day parade in Hartland and St. Albans
HARTLAND/ST. ALBANS - The traditional Memorial Day Parade
in Hartland and St. Albans will be held on Monday, May 25; 9 a.m. in
Hartland and 10 a.m. in St. Albans. What is needed now is the commitment of local veterans to participate.
The declining membership of the local American Legion threatened
the long-standing tradition. With the help of the local historical societies, Hartland and St. Albans, and interested individuals, the timehonored salute to veterans will continue.
RSU 19 bands from Nokomis Regional High School, Somerset and
Sebasticook Middle School bands are scheduled to participate as well
as local Boy Scouts and Fire Departments.
Area veterans, from any town in central Maine, are invited to join
the people of Hartland and St. Albans for this year’s parade. Veterans
are invited to ride in the parade, transportation will be provided on
the parade route. Veterans can join the parade by meeting at Indian
Stream Hardware on the Palmyra Road in St. Albans BY 8:30 a.m.,
to be bussed to the parade start in Hartland, and be returned to the
Indian Stream Hardware parking lot at the end of the parade in St.
Albans.
Veterans and their spouses or guests are invited to a reception with
coffee and doughnuts following the parade at the St. Albans Union
Church
Veterans who want to join in the parade are encouraged to call to

names Lead Physician for Urology
PITTSFIELD - Sebasticook Valley Health (SVH) has announced that urologist and SVH Board Trustee
Krishna M. Bhatta, MD, FRCS, has been named the Lead Physician for Urology at Eastern Maine Medical
Center (EMMC) in Bangor.
“We are very proud that Dr. Bhatta has been chosen for this leadership role,” said Terri Vieira, SVH
President and CEO/Senior Vice President of EMHS. “Dr. Bhatta is a valued urologist as well as a highly
effective leader at SVH, and we are confident that he will lead EMMC’s urology staff with the same passion and commitment to patient care that he has provided our patients for many years.”
An expert in minimally invasive urologic procedures, Dr. Bhatta received his medical training in Patna,
Bihar, India and the United Kingdom, where he trained in urology and general surgery. He obtained FRCS
from Edinburgh, Scotland, and London, England. Dr. Bhatta specializes in prostate surgery and has written numerous urologic publications, performed clinical laser research for the treatment of stones, and also
received numerous device patents. Most recently, Dr. Bhatta and other physicians from EMMC partnered
with researchers from the University of Maine to develop Magnetic Artificial Sphincter or MARS that provides a minimally invasive option for men suffering with bladder control or urinary incontinence. Early
studies with prototypes of this device have shown promising results.
Dr. Bhatta is past president of the Maine Medical Association and is currently a board trustee for Sebasticook Valley Health, where he and his wife, gynecologist Nayantara “Lekha” Bhatta, care for patients.
Both SVH and EMMC are members of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems (EMHS).
National Nurse Week
DOVER-FOXCROFT - Mayo Regional Hospital is currently celebrating National Nurses Week and is
supporting the many roles that nurses play in providing high quality care to the patients in rural community.
The American Nurses Association (ANA) marked May 6 to May 12 as National Nurses Week. This
year’s theme is “Ethical Practice. Quality Care.”
Mayo Regional Hospital’s designation as a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) is given to certain rural
hospitals and is designed to reduce the financial vulnerability of those hospitals and improve access to
healthcare by providing essential services in rural communities. Working as a nurse in a CAH can be
both challenging and rewarding. According to a local spokesperson, “Nurses in rural healthcare are often
seen as the ‘Jack of all Trades’ due to the lack of specialization in CAH’s; ut this does not mean ‘Master
of None’. CAH nurses master the art of caring for the members of their own communities. They are constantly faced with providing quality care to patients with limited community resources. Nurses in CAHs
need to maintain a high level of competency to care for high risk patients even though they may not see
the high risk illnesses as often as one might in a larger, more urban hospital. These challenges make it
ever important for today’s CAH nurses to be mindful of the role of ethical practice in quality patient care,”
the spokesperson concluded.
