The latest round of approved funding includes $50,000 MicroEnterprise Assistance grants for Maine Mountain Soap and Candle and Porter’s Garage, both of Greenville; and Martin Cleaning Service of Sangerville, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Economic Development. The applications were submitted through the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council. Maine Mountain Soap and Candle will use the money to replace a computer, add a pointof-sale system for tracking inventory and new signage while Porter’s Garage will use the grant to replace three bay doors, windows and retrofit office area for customer service. “Maine Mountain Soap and Candle and Porter’s Garage are both family-owned and operated small businesses in Greenville which have capital needs which are not likely to be met without these forgivable loans,” said Town Manager John Simko. “The town of Greenville is glad to be in a position to assist them. We wouldn’t have been able to do so without the help of the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council.” Sangerville Town Manager Ken Woodbury said he was “thrilled that Sangerville was able to help a growing family business in town expand its operations. Martin Cleaning Services works mainly in the evening hours so that supermarkets, retail stores and professional offices can be clean and ready to greet their customers in the morning.” Woodbury said the grant will allow Martin Cleaning Services “to expand its operations to handle larger gross square footages that require battery-operated and larger cleaning equipment. The grant not only provides financing for these larger polishers and scrubbers but will allow the purchase of a van to transport the equipment and personnel to the job sites.” Within the last few years, Ka- tahdin Cookie Works, Jamison’s Store, Leisure Life Resort and Northwoods Gourmet Girl in Greenville have also been awarded Micro-Enterprise Grants to improve their facilities or purchase new equipment. A grant also helped Dove Tail Bat Company in Shirley construct a new building and buy additional equipment last year. The local firm supplies bats for several major and minor league baseball teams and professional leagues in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Japan. Several members of the Kansas City Royals, winners of the 2015 World Series, also use Dove Tail Bats. The Micro-Enterprise Assistance (MEA) Grant Program provides grant funds to communities to assist in innovative solutions to problems faced by micro-enterprise businesses. Assistance to businesses may be in the form of grants or loans at the discretion of the community, including a match from the benefiting business. The vote was 132-14 in the House and 29-5 in the Senate. Milo Police Chief Damien Pickel recently posted an open letter to Gov. Paul LePage on his department’s Facebook page, rejecting the governor’s contention that Narcan “does not truly save lives. It merely extends them until the next overdose.” The police chief pointed out that Narcan “is not a safety net for the addict that will perpetuate the use of heroin. When an addict is overdosing, they lack the skills to administer it themselves.” 364 CORINNA RD., RT. 7 DEXTER 924-6538 Open Monday - Saturday 8 to 5 Perennials, Annuals and Many Herbs 10” Hanging Baskets $14.99 and up 6 Packs starting at $2.99 ALL MOMS RECEIVE A GIFT ON MOTHER’S DAY (DV\0DLQ6WUHHW$FFHVV Hanging Baskets, Vegetable Seedlings, Annuals, Perennials, Soils, Mulch, Compost and more. 3/ 3/86DOO\RXUJDUGHQLQJWRROV TILLSON TRUE VALUE 0DLQ6W'H[WHU ZZZ7LOOVRQ7UXH9DOXHFRP 6SULQJLV+HUH *LYH\RXUKRPHRURIÀFHDIUHVKORRN :HKDQGOHLQWHULRUDQGH[WHULRUSDLQWLQJ ÁRRULQJLQFOXGLQJODPLQDWH VKHHWURFNDQGVSDFNOLQJLQVXODWLQJ GHFNLQJZLQGRZDQGGRRUUHSODFHPHQW PHWDODQGDVSKDOWURRÀQJVLGLQJDQGPRUH 4XDOLW\ZRUNIRUDQ\WKLQJWRGRZLWK\RXUKRPHRURIÀFH KUIRUPHQ*LYHXVDFDOOWRGD\ )UHHHVWLPDWHVDQGUHIHUHQFHVDYDLODEOH After the Legislature’s vote Friday, Pickel he was pleased with the reversal. “I think common sense prevailed,” Pickel said. “I hope no one ever has to use it (Narcan), but reality dictates otherwise. I think it was a good day for Maine.” Rep. Norman Higgins (D-Dover-Foxcroft) announced his intention to support the override a few days before the vote. “It is intended as an immediate intervention to save a life,” Higgins wrote. “Clear and simple, it is hard to do an intervention when they have died. I will vote to override the veto. Common sense will prevail.” Rep. Paul Stearns (R-Guilford) and Sen. Paul Davis (R-Sangerville) also voted to override the governor’s veto while Rep. Ray Wallace (R-Dexter) voted to sustain it. The bill (LD 1547) allows pharmacists to immediately dispense naloxone to eligible individuals. This will allow family members or friends to counteract an opiate overdose before emergency responders arrive. Approximately 30 states now permit naloxone to be prescribed via standing order, which allows it to be dispensed to any person who meets criteria specified by the prescriber. According to the Maine Attorney General’s office, 272 Mainers died of drug overdose in 2015, a 31 percent increase over the record 208 overdose deaths recorded the year before. Other local recipients receiving $1,000 awards were Community Fitness in Guilford, the Greenville Junction Depot Friends and the Aliza Jean Family Cancer Foundation. Chad Poland, pastor of the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church and president of the food cupboard, said that the organization’s board of directors will make a decision soon on how to use the money. “A special allocation of these funds will require an amendment to our budget by the board. It is, after all, unexpected money,” Poland said. “It’s a nice problem to have.” The food cupboard reorganized last year and now serves around 100 families. The Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church has served as the food distribution point on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month since May 2015. Community Fitness was established in 2003 in the former Guilford Primary School as a nonprofit designed to promote a healthy lifestyle through various forms of physical exercise, nutritional counsel, holistic health services and education. They also offer scholarship rates for those who are income-eligible. The Greenville Junction Depot Friends has been holding fundraisers for the past six years to restore the historic railroad depot built in 1889. The organization also hosts a reunion for former railroad workers each summer along with an art show and open house. The Aliza Jean Family Cancer Foundation, based in Harmony, provides financial support for local families who have a child fighting cancer. The foundation was started in memory of Aliza Jean Herrick Stutzman who lost her battle with brain cancer at 13. Bangor Savings Bank Foundation donated a total of $100,000 to 68 Maine-based non-profit organizations throughout the state during the annual campaign. Dean plan new Greenville day care center by Mike Lange GREENVILLE – Thanks to a collaborative effort between C.A. Dean Memorial Hospital and the Piscataquis Regional YMCA, a new day care center will open in Greenville later this year. The site hasn’t been finalized yet; but after four months of meetings, the planning committee announced Monday that the project is definitely going forward. “There’s a lot to be done, but it’s going to happen fast,” said Bre Graffam, the senior administrative assistant at C.A. Dean. The center will be licensed for up to 49 youngsters and could create up to 15 jobs, according to the committee. Finding child care that fits the needs of working mothers has been a longstanding problem in Greenville with only a few licensed providers and rare openings. C.A. Dean conducted an inhouse survey last year and the results showed that lack of child care had an adverse effect on the workforce with some employees considering either resigning or scaling back their hours. A new survey open to the general public will be getting underway shortly – using social media – to pinpoint the extent of the problem. Rod Willey, the executive director of the PRYMCA, said that he became aware of the problem last fall and discussed it with Kelly Hutchinson, the organization’s child care director. He then met with Graffam, C.A. Dean CEO Geno Murray and Greenville Town Manager John Simko to see how his organization could help. “Both our boards felt that a collaborative effort was the best approach,” Willey said. “So the PRYMCA will run the day-to-day operation. We’ll be hiring the folks to run it and C.A. Dean will do the business plan and provide administrative support,” Willey said. The hospital and PRYMCA are looking for start-up funds through various grants, Willey added. “We’re both nonprofit organizations, so there are sources out there,” he said. The PRYMCA ran swimming and summer recreation programs in Greenville many years ago, but the new day care center will be the first permanent presence of the organization in decades. The community’s original hospital was built by Hollingsworth and Whitney, a logging company, in Greenville Junction in 1911 which doubled as a regional YMCA. Graffam said that C.A. Dean and the PRYMCA are also looking into providing adult day care in the new center eventually. “We are still doing research on this but there is a definite need for it,” she said. The fees at the new center will be comparable to private providers, but Willey said that the PRYMCA’s policy is that “no one will be turned away. It’s our job to raise funds to provide scholarships (subsidies) for low-income families.” Graffam said that once the new survey is completed, a follow-up meeting will be held and more specific information may be revealed. Families who don’t have Internet access who would like to participate in the survey can contact Graffam at 695-5215. COMPASS is sponsored weekly by: The Eastern Gazette * Your HomeTown AdVantage May 6 - 12, 2016 Central Hall landscaping and brick laying to be completed by early summer DOVER-FOXCROFT The Friends of Central Hall Committee (FOCH) have announced that the time is near to start the landscaping, laying of engraved bricks, and the fun part of putting this grand old building back together again. Much of the preliminary construction work of the interior and exterior has been completed including abatement, drywall, roofing, doors and windows, siding, concrete, and various types of prep work that needed to be completed first. Immediate plans are for finishing the second floor work including installation of the elevator, preparation of the new stage area, choosing light fixtures, electrical work, and painting. The first floor will house an Adult Day Service Center and Senior Center. That work will follow completion of the second floor Event Center. The FOCH committee would like to thank all who have worked hand in hand with them. In 2009 the Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society and a small group of passionate citizens pursued a dream of saving the historical building. FOCH was charged with raising $25,000 in approximately a month as a signal to the then current Board of Selectmen that there was significant interest from townspeople and other friends to keep this building from going the way of the Blethen House, North and Pleasant Street Schools as well as other local historical structures. Almost $30,000 was raised in this short timeframe from approximately 300 generous friends with a lot of interest generated in the project. Several grants have been secured to assure the major construction phases could be accomplished. However, one of the more nostalgic fundraising projects has been the sale of engraved bricks. Approximately 200 engraved bricks have been sold to date, and will stand as tributes to family members, current and former businesses, organizations, Foxcroft Academy Alumni, Foxcroft Academy Page 7 INSPECTIONS AUTO - BIG TRUCKS - TRACTORS TRAILERS - MOTOR HOMES MOTORCYCLES Classes, events at Central Hall, town fathers, and military units are all about to be honored and presented to our many friends. The landscaping and brick laying will be completed together as the bricks will form patio areas on either side of the walkway surrounded by plants and flowers. Co-Chair of the Buy-ABrick project, Barb Moore, states that the vision of generations of people casually strolling amidst the bricks, smiling, reminiscing, and telling stories that these names conjure up constantly brings tears to her eyes. It is not too late to purchase a brick for this first laying which will occur in mid-June. There are two sizes – a 4”x8” for $100.00 or 8”x8” for $200.00. Logos are also available for an additional fee. The Eastern Gazette * Your HomeTown AdVantage May 6 - 12, 2016 Foxcroft Pharmacy celebrates Let EVERYONE grand opening with ribbon-cutting Know by Mike Lange Use: DOVER-FOXCROFT – Foxcroft Pharmacy officially opened its doors a few weeks ago, but the timing was near-perfect for the ribboncutting ceremony on April 30. After a few days of unseasonably low temperatures, the skies were bright and highs in the low 60s for the celebration, attended by an estimated 100 people. The Foxcroft Academy band offered musical entertainment while visitors snacked on goodies provided by Spencer’s Bakery and Will’s Shop ‘N Save. “It’s so nice to have another new business become part of the community,” said Denise Buzzelli, executive director of the Piscataquis Chamber of Commerce. “They add a personal touch with great customer service.” The new business is at the site of the former Dover-Foxcroft Community Food Bank on West Main Street. Owner and pharmacist Gail Bergeron’s husband, Donovan, built the new structure using the framework from the existing building. During the brief ceremony, congratulatory letters were read from U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin by Sen. Paul Davis and from U.S. Sen. Angus King by his regional representative Elizabeth MacTaggart. Davis also lauded the Bergerons, noting that his parents ran a retail store in Dexter “for about 35 years, so I understand the challenges in front of you. It hasn’t gotten any easier.” Poliquin’s letter said, in part, that “family-owned businesses like yours are so important because they provide needed jobs and quality goods and services for our friends and neighbors.” Bergeron’s staff also includes pharmacists Shawn Pushor and Megan Gorman and pharmacy technicians Pam Bailey, Jenny Knight and Kate Nichols. Rep. Norman Higgins recalled that Pushor was one of his students at Piscataquis Community High School during his years as principal and superintendent. “So I want to say thank you on behalf of his parents for hiring him,” he joked. King’s note praised Bergeron for opening the new business and wished her “many years of continued success.” Weekly Rates ★★★ PLEASE BRING IN YOUR USED MOTOR OIL ★★★ BROOKS Tire & Auto 924-7149 or 1-800-339-7149 Corinna Rd., Dexter • www.BrooksAuto.com ("*JBBDIB QRZRSHUDWLQJZLWKDQHQYLURQPHQWDOO\VDIH FXWWROHQJWKV\VWHP The Eastern Gazette • Forester Available • Management Plans • Aesthetic Forestry • Timber Stand Volumes • References Available Upon Request Delivered to 16,193 LOCAL addresses every week. STUTZMAN DOVER-FOXCROFT - Robert “Bobby” Francis Stutzman, husband of Janet, and son of Otto and Alice Stutzman, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at Tampa General Hospital, Tampa, Florida, from complications with a myriad of illnesses. He was born January 29, 1948, in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. He attended Sangerville schools and graduated from Piscataquis Community High School (his 50th class reunion is this year). He was a graduate of Eastern Maine Vocational Institute’s business program. He then continued his studies in a pilot Robert Stutzman program at Husson College, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS degree in Business. He worked as the produce manager in the Dover-Foxcroft Red and White (Hannaford Brothers) for 30 years. He was a past member of the Sangerville Fire Department, a member of the Dover-Foxcroft Charter Com-mission, a member of the Dover-Foxcroft Jaycees, an active Mason, and owner of Adventure Sports of Dover-Foxcroft. He was an accomplished musician and played with many area bands. (He was a four-year member of the high school band also). His proudest accomplishment however was as the original promoter of the now well-known Stutzman’s Farm Stand, owned and operated by his brother, Sidney. Bobby had asked his Dad if he could take some squash to the County Fair to sell. His Dad did not think it would be a good business endeavor, but he consented. Bobby sold the squash! It was an effort for a young man - he neededtransportation, he needed “equipment” and had to lug that squash around. He thought it out and decided it would be easier to sell squash roadside. He did, and made money. His Dad saw that, and voila, the farm stand was born with Stutzman’s potatoes being the original headline item! (Now you know the rest of the story, and furthermore, Bob hated squash!). He has been an enthusiastic and generous supporter of his grandsons, “Tino” and “Rico’s” athletic participation over the years, attending their games and matches, their musical concerts, and transporting them to countless events, including working in the hotdog stand. Bob and Janet had traveled to Florida for their annual visit with Jim and Eileen Goulette. They, with Janet and Bob’s daughter Angela, and her sons, were with him during his extensive stay in the ICU at Tampa General. After his passing, Janet, his friends, and Angela, her husband, Luis, and their sons, Tino and Rico, released balloons into the blue Florida sky with notes of love and memories to be carried with Bob’s soul upward and onward. He is survived by his wife, Janet; brother, Richard and wife, Gail; brother, Sidney and wife, Rainie; a daughter Angela and husband, Luis and grandsons Antonio (Tino) and Enrico (Rico); a son, Karl and granddaughters, Bree Elle, Olivia and Natalie, numerous nieces and nephews; and his cat “Sadie”. He was predeceased by his parents; a grand-niece, Aliza; and a great cat, “Simon”. Donations may be made to the Aliza Jean Family Cancer Foundation, c/o Bangor Savings Bank, PO Box 454, Skowhegan, ME 04976, or a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016, at the Lary Funeral Home, DoverFoxcroft, Maine, with a Celebration of Life immediately after at the American Legion Hall on Park Street, Dover-Foxcroft. The budget committee meets several times and thoroughly discusses the budget, cutting or adding as they see fit. At the end of this process they sit down with the select board and go over the proposed budget one more time to see if both groups are in agreement. The town report clearly shows the proposed budget for the coming year along side the budets and actual expenditures for the two previous years. The town warrant for the annual meeting clearly states what amount of funding the budget committee recommends and what amount the select board recommends so that the residents know when the two groups disagree and can decide between the two figures or vote for some other figure entirely. This year the select board decided to start the budgeting process before 2015 even ended. On December 22, the board voted to give the town clerk, deputy town clerk, the custodian and the public works director substantial raises. When the budget committee started meeting in January, we thought that those were recommendations, since the select board had no money with which to fund those raises. the committee spent most of two sessions discussing what appropriate raises would be and what the town could afford, recommending enough funding for 2% raises across the board. When the committeee met with the select board, the board was cavalier in its dismissal of a discussion on the budget. In fact, as long as the budget committee agreed to lump sum funding for the fire department and public works, the select board was happy to approve the budget committee’s recommendations, without looking at our proposal. The town report did not have the figures for the proposed budget this year and the warrant for town meeting had the select board and the budget committee in complete agreement, never differing. With this paucity of information, the residents voted on the budget, assuming that the select board and their budget committee had agreed. The budget committee was under that impression as well. When the first selectmen’s meeting rolled around after the town meeting, employee salaries were once again on the agenda. The budget committee members assumed this was to finalize the 2% raises that had been budgeted and the townspeople had agreed to fund. Alas, that was not so. The select board discussed their vote in December, deciding that there was no need to rescind it and spoke briefly to their plans to finagle the budget so that they could fund these raises. Due to the set up of the budget, the public works director’s raise is easily funded as is the maintenance worker’s, but ther other two raises fall under administration and there is little extra money in that section of the budget. The raises will increase administration just under $7,000 and one employee alone will get nearly a 24% raise. Those numbers are astounding and no one with an ounce of fiscal sense would approve them, but our select board did. The select board then proceeded to hide what they had done from the public. They told the budget committee they agreed with our recommendations. The column for the proposed budget was conveniently left out of the town report. They phrased the warrant so that it appeared that the budget committee and the select board agreed and encouraged the budget committee to tell interested parties that a 2% raise was approved. Nowhere in the town report did it show the increase they were planning in administration. Sangerville’s select board is on a power trip. They ignored the budget committee they set up to advise them and made no effort to represent the townspeople who elected them. Gerald A. Jackson Sangerville SENIOR MATTERS “Feeling your age?” by Lesley M. Fernow, MD In the past week 5 people in my life have independently spoken about suddenly becoming aware of aging--- and not being happy about it. This seems to be a signal that it is time to write about it. Although each of these people is a different age ranging from 60-93, they only now are at a time in their lives where they are becoming aware in a new and very poignant and personal way of aging. We often hear people joking about getting old, especially when they turn 50 and get black balloons or cards referencing being “over the hill.” We know we will get old some day and the common image of aging is dark and to be avoided. But most of us live lives of blessed oblivion about the meaning of this until reality smacks us in the face. But this moment where we meet the future we all dread, although different for each of us, is a marker of life, a watershed moment. Why is it that some people have this “Aha! moment” at 60 while others don’t experience it until they are in their 90s? After all, grey hair and wrinkles often start much earlier. The outward, visible signs of aging occur often while we still feel pretty young in spirit. Yet many people remain vibrant, engaged and “young at heart” well past the time the body has bid farewell to youth. The common thread for the people I encountered this week was a sudden awareness that the body and mind are not working without paying attention to them and that some of the physical problems are not just annoyances any more. For some of them, chronic pain is part of the mix, and for others some loss of mental sharpness is a concern. But the most important thing for all of them is that this new awareness is related to having to change behavior and stop doing some of the things they love to do because it is now too hard or too risky. Perhaps it is time to stop downhill skiing, or climbing ladders, or living alone, or driving? Or perhaps you now need someone to help with finances or are thinking about what is in your will? Or perhaps your trips are now more like group tours rather than independently scooting around on a motorbike. Getting older is a normal part of life. Most of us will be lucky enough to experience it. But we should prepare for it and for the emotional swings that go with it. The awareness of aging often thrusts people into a state of sudden grief about losing the freedoms of younger years. Some people experience sudden fear for the future. Some people become depressed. Some people grasp even more at life by rapidly going down the bucket list before time runs out and develop hyperactivity and sleep problems. However, planning for the eventual reality may help to make it more just a natural stage of life than a dreaded event. Occasionally, I meet older people who are content, and even happy about their new-found seniority which allows them to sleep when they want, do what they like and prove themselves to no one. These people do not age with dread but have a remarkable acceptance of the natural course of things and are generally seen by people around them as graceful and wise. What they do is adapt their expectations of life in parallel with the requirements of aging. As their bodies begin to weaken, they look for ways to express themselves in life differently. Perhaps they take up painting or writing poetry. Perhaps they do scrapbooking or spend time seeking out movies at Center Theatre. Instead of skiing they do gentle yoga, swimming or walking with friends. One thing they usually do not do, however, is stop doing anything. My oldest patients are those that have remained active and engaged throughout their lives and especially in their later years. Many of them are now living in their 100s. So, I am intending, as I approach my inevitable future to plan for it with eager curiosity. I am thinking about things I can/could do, what I have missed in the first 2/3 of my life and what makes me happy and why. I am considering how I will remain engaged, fit and useful to my society. I urge everyone to begin to have conversations about this and to share great ideas. Also, become involved in making our community supportive of healthy and vibrant aging by lending your ideas on how to do this to the Maine Highlands Senior Center as we move forward in creating a concept for thriving in place. The building is next to the Three Rivers Kiwanis Club in the Eastern Piscataquis Business Park. The center is owned by the Three Rivers Kiwanis Club of Milo-Brownville Foundation and was made possible through a generous donation by Tom and Nancy Harrigan. Tom Harrigan retired from AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1987 after a long career in electrical engineering. Throughout his lifetime, he had an insatiable fascination with fossils and traveled as often as he could to seek and collect them. Immediately upon his retirement, the couple began traveling around the world on an archeological adventure that would even intrigue action film hero Indiana Jones. Forty years later, Tom Harrigan had accumulated a collection of fossils, artifacts and minerals so large he could no longer house it all at his Milo residence. Because the collection was equally as impressive as its size, members of the community continually encouraged Harrigan to find a way to display it since it would be something students, families, and tourists alike would certainly appreciate. In 2013, the Harrigans paid for the cost of a new building in the Eastern Piscataquis Business Park and donated it to Three Rivers Kiwanis, an organization of which Tom and Nancy are active members. Two years later, on the same grounds as the Kiwanis building, now stands the Harrigan Learning Center and Museum – the Harrigans’ newest labor of love. The center is carefully filled with the prized items they’ve collected over the years. Walking through the museum is a feast for the eyes from floor to ceiling, thanks to hand-painted murals by local artist Suzette East, whose talent has captured scenes from the moments in history from which many of the artifacts and fossils are derived. Tom and Nancy Harrigan are deeply involved in the town of Milo and have an unusual sensitivity to the needs of the community and beyond. They made every effort to use only local contractors and distributors during construction of the learning center. Because of this, the county has already benefited from the building project and the anticipated tourism traffic is sure to give the economy an additional boost. TCTC truckers receive awards at Augusta truck driving competition DEXTER - The four (4) CTE Schools in Maine that have CDL Training Programs for their vocational/technical high school age students held the 4th Annual Dick Dolloff Memorial High School Truck Driving Competition at the Augusta Civic Center in conjunction with the NAWIC Construction Expo recently. The Association of the Licensed CDL Instructors (CDIA) for the high school programs represented by Region 3 which serves the Lincoln area, Region 9 which serves the Rumford area, Tri-County Technical Center which serves the Dexter area and Westbrook Regional Vocational Center which serves students from the Westbrook area; and with Maine Motor Transport Association (MMTA) and the Maine Professional Drivers Association (MPDA) members organized this event. The event consisted of the students skillfully driving tractor-trailer combinations and dump trucks through an obstacle course of hazards and problems and performing an accurate vehicle safety inspection with Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Troopers from the Maine State Police as the judges. Food for the event was donated by Delhaize America/Hannaford Supermarkets of Scarborough, North Center Foods, Tim Hortons of Lincoln and prepared by the Northern Penobscot Reg. 3 Culinary Arts Instructor/Chef Herman Ammerman and his students. The brand new equipment the students drove and inspected was donated for the day by Whited Peterbilt of Auburn/Bangor made possible by Sue McAvoy, by O’Conner-Volvo of Augusta made possible by Pat Bushey and Freightliner of Maine made possible by Brian Hallowell. The equipment value of the vehicles used by these high school drivers had a dollar value of over one million dollars. This is the 4th year these dealers have offered equipment for this event. Several Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicle Licensing Examiners and nearly a dozen MPDA members, who are current or retired CDL Operators from all over Maine and were present to act as skill judges and scorers. The MPDA men and women will also serve as mentors to the drivers who won eligibility to attend the Professional Driver Championship to be held in Bangor at Dysart’s Truck Stop on Saturday, May 21st. Because of the involvement of MPDA, there were 4 television news channels present as well as a local newspaper and a national magazine journalist doing stories on these young CDL Operators. Several Maine trucking companies brought trucks and company representatives to talk with the students about the possibility of employment with their companies. Some of the represented companies were Maine DOT, Performance Foods, Pine State, EJ Carrier and Pepsi Co., to name a few. The TCTC award winners were Class A vehicle: 2nd place - Dylan Thibodeau(Nokomis). Class A - Pre-Trip Safety Award - Ben Raymond(Guilford), Class B vehicle 1st place- Cody Sylvester(Milo), Class B team award –TCTC. Thompson Free Library May update by Kim Brawn DOVER-FOXCROFT - The month of May finds the Thompson Free Library in Dover-Foxcroft participating in community events and hosting interesting programs. On Saturday, May 7, Thompson Free Library will have a table at Healthy Kids Day at the Piscataquis Regional YMCA from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Our monthly Brown Bag Lunch Series continues at the library on Thursday, May 12 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. with a PowerPoint presentation called “The Ever Changing World of Financial Services.” Diane Parola (VP, Marketing/Technology) and Shelley Blockler (VP, Operations) from Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union will give us the inside scoop on mobile and internet baking and bill pay. Learn how to use technology to manage your finances more conveniently while keeping your personal information safe and secure. Attention amateur astronomers and stargazers: Michelle Fagan, librarian at Thompson Free Library, will host (along with Maine Mathematics & Science Alliance) a “Star Party” at Peaks-Kenny State Park at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 27. We will have two telescopes available but feel free to bring your own. This event is open to the public. Besides its special programs, Thompson Free Library, according to Library Director Helen Fogler, has “an extensive and diverse collection of 35,000 printed materials,” including 11,000 in children and young adult genres. You’ll find almost every fiction book on the New York Times bestseller list and an impressive array of non-fiction bestsellers too. Movie fans will enjoy choosing from a selection of almost 2,000 films. Books (including almost 700 audio) circulate for two weeks while DVDs go out for one week. New books and movies are constantly being added. We frequently list new releases on our Facebook page. Dover-Foxcroft residents can become patrons for free and nonresidents pay an annual fee of $20 to access the many library resources, including Maine InfoNet—a downloadable library with almost 10,000 ebooks and 5,000 audio books. Even if you’re not a patron, you can still access our free wi-fi on your own laptop or mobile device, borrow one of ours, or get online via one of the library’s three desktop computers. Printing and copying are .20/ page and faxing is 2.00 for the first page and 1.00 for each subsequent page. Whether you need to do important research or just want to read David Baldacci’s latest book--whatever your pursuits or interests--the library is an accessible, fun, and practical resource. For more information, call the Thompson Free Library (186 E. Main Street, Dover-Foxcroft) at 564-3350 and follow us on Facebook.
