PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
2014 – 2015 ACCREDITATION REPORT
Our Accreditation visit is coming up on the 21st and 22nd of
April. We have been preparing for this visit of the External
Review Team ever since our 2009 visit concluded! (BTW, we
scored the highest possible score during that visit – so we are
confident that our score this time will be equally
exceptional.)The purpose of the Accreditation process is to
keep us moving forward and to help us stay focused on
providing the best learning environment possible for all of our
students.
You may be interested to know a little bit about the criteria
used by our visiting team to determine whether or not we are
being successful. The first component is the Executive
Summary. Because every school has its own story to tell, the
visiting team is interested in the context in which teaching and
learning takes places and how it influences the processes and
procedures by which the school makes decisions around
curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also
impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. The
purpose is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe
the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the
public and members of the school community have a complete
picture of how the school perceives itself through the process of
self-reflection for continuous improvement. The summary is
structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching
and learning on a day to day basis.
The Self Assessment portion of the report gives us direction in
drilling down to examine the details of how we make decisions.
There are five Standards we examine closely: #1 Purpose and
Directions, #2 Governance and Leadership, #3 Teaching and

Assessing for Learning, #4 Resources and Support Systems,
and #5 Using Results for Continuous Improvement. These
standards serve as the foundation of Accreditation and the
Continuous Improvement process. They are a valuable tool for
collaboratively engaging staff members and stakeholders in
purposeful, honest dialogue and reflection to assess the
institution’s adherence to the Standards, and guide its
continuous improvement efforts. The Self Assessment includes
the school’s self-ratings of (and the evidence cited for) each of
the indicators, comments that explain the indicator’s ratings,
and an overall narrative for each Standard. The results of this
assessment will be used by the External Review Team as one
essential informational component as they prepare to visit East.
You may have participated in the Stakeholder Feedback
Diagnostic portion of Accreditation if you answered the survey
questions on-line. The surveys (taken by Students, Parents, and
Staff) are designed to analyze East in terms of areas of
achievement and areas that need improvement. Further, the
diagnostic is essential to the Accreditation and Continuous
Improvement process in that it provides the institution with a
comprehensive view of the aggregate scores of the surveys
administered, and the actual total of respondents for each
survey type to derive a single score for this diagnostic. It is
used to broaden and enhance the External Review Team’s
understanding of the stakeholder’s perceptions of the
institution; it is then used by the Leadership Team at East to
shape our School Improvement Plan (SIP). The questions in the
survey are organized around the same five Standards in the Self
Assessment report.
The Student Performance Diagnostic provides us with a
process to report on student results on standardized tests as well
as tests used by teachers to determine if students have learned
necessary material. This portion of the report serves as a
resource for us to view content area assessment results required
by the state and district to determine the quality and reliability
of the assessments and show how well they align with the
school’s curriculum. It is used by the External Review Team as
a comprehensive report to fully understand our assessment
program. The results also help shape our School Improvement
Plan. We are excited about the SIP goals we have generated
this year in response to this careful examination of our
demographics, our survey results, and our student Performance
results. Watch for information next month about what those
plans are as we prepare for the 2015-2016 school year.
The Accreditation process gives us the opportunity to take a
close look at how our students are performing and to analyze
and plan for the future. It is a privilege to work with your
children; we take our responsibility towards them seriously, and
want you to know you are welcome to communicate with us at
any time about concerns or suggestions you might have.

504 PLANS
504 Plans need to be renewed annually. If you have a student
on a 504 Plan and would like it renewed for 2015-2016, please
contact Mary Lane Grisley by phone or email.
SUMMER DRIVER’S ED
Summer Driver Education starts April 27th at 2:45-4:10 in the
Driver Education Room. Students can catch the 4:15 bus home.
To sign up, just come on the first day of class. Must have
Learner Permit in order to sign up.
Class will run daily through May and students can only miss
one day per 30 hrs required by state.
Cost is $120.00 or Fee waiver. Bring receipt to class. Cost will
include classroom time, range time, driving behind wheel and
Road Test.

COUNSELING CENTER
SENIORS
The last day to turn in credits earned outside of East High
School in order to have them count towards qualifying to walk
during graduation on June 5th is Monday, May 4th. Any
exceptions to this district policy must be requested through
your counselor by May 4th.
EARN AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE WHILE STILL IN
HIGH SCHOOL
East High School students may earn an Associate’s degree
while in high school, and qualify for a New Century
Scholarship to help pay for the remainder of hours required for
a Bachelor's degree at a Utah college/university. The
Associates Degree may be earned in General Studies, or
Math/Science. The optimal time to begin is during the 10th
grade year in high school. Orientation meetings are being held
this spring, so contact your East High counselor for more
information!
9th GRADE CCR’s
During the month of March and April, we will be continuing
with 9th grade CCR’s. Parents/Guardians will receive in the
mail a letter with the time and date of the set appointment.

APRIL ACT
The next ACT exam will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015.
On the day of the exam, bring your admissions ticket, picture
ID, pencils, and approved calculator. No cell phones or pagers

focus on hip hop and break dancing, but do other styles

Essay contest winner
The National Association of Multicultural Education
(NAME) conference held an essay contest in Utah for
middle and high school students in February. The NAME
conference awarded two junior high and three high
school student winners with scholarships. One of the
lucky winners was Shams Al--Shawbaki, Junior at East
High. She was honored along with the other scholarship
recipients at the NAME conference luncheon where she
was able to give a little speech and read her
h essay. The
topic of the essay was "An Urgency for Positive Cultural
Identity in Education: As human beings, we are each a
matrix of diverse identities that combine to make us who
we are. Aspects of our identity
include race, culture, gender, ability,
religion,
ligion, class, language, sexual
orientation etc. Which aspects of
yourself do you find most
important to your identity? In
what ways do you find these
important aspects of your
identity reflected in your
school experiences?"
Cesar Chavez Contest Winners
The Salt Lake City School District's annual Cesar Chavez
contest invites students of all ages to respond to the
prompt "What will you do to be a leader for social
justice? What cause are you passionate about? What will
you do to bring about change in relation to this cause?"
The students can participate in the visual arts or
language arts category. The winners were honored at an
open house and gallery stroll at the Mestizo
Coffeehouse. East High's winners in the language arts
category were Alondra Miranda (3rd place) and Nelly
Yamileth Rivera Matute (Honorable Mention).
District Art Show Results
The Salt Lake City School Districts Secondary Art Show
was held in March at the University Of Utah Art
Education Building. East High School had a great
representation of many different kinds of art, such as
drawings, paintings, photographs, design projects, and
ceramics. The following students received awards: Best
of Show for 2D work, Grant Anderson, a junior in AP
Studio Class and First Place in 2D work, Ellie Lowell, a
senior in AP Studio Class.
Sara Wright won Third Place in Ceramics and Mariana
Castaneda took Second Place in Photography. The
following students won Honorable Mention: Litzy
Guzman, Thomas Broadbent, Lucas Idstrom, Sara Wright,
Taylor Duong, Andre Delgadillo, Chris Rushing, Sarah
Sargent, and Autumn Cushing. Awards were presented
at the reception on Thursday, March 19.
Region Drama Results
East’s one act play “Making the Move” won third place at
region and will proceed to state. The play featured Josh
Teeples, Emily Henricksen, Kyle Schoonover and Kaitlyn
Gordon.
Brianda Marin took 2nd place in Dramatic Monologue.
Tommy Loveridge and Scott Wilson took 3rd place in
Pantomime.

Scenes
EAST LACROSSE
The varsity lacrosse team is off to a great start of the season.
The team is led by seniors Jake Parkin, Kort Johnson, Eric
Coombs and Tyson Holt. Junior standouts include Mikey
Vetter, Andrew Wilkinson, Joey Anderson, Christian Fletcher
and Seth McConkie. The team has had great games against
Judge (double-overtime loss) and traditional rival Lehi,
winning 5-4 on Lehi's field. The team had easy wins against
Box Elder and Desert Hills.
The East program has become one of the leading lacrosse
programs in the state. Over 200 youth players are playing for
East teams. Look for the high school team to go deep into the
playoffs this year. For the first time, we also have JV and
Freshmen teams this year and both teams are doing great.
East girls are playing on the West team this year and making a
big impact. Come watch both the boys and girls play - our
kids are fantastic athletes and the games are really fun to watch!

REGISTERING FOR SELECTIVE SERVICE
The law requires virtually all male U.S. citizens (regardless of
where they live), and male immigrants residing in the U.S.
(permanent resident aliens), to register within 30 days of their 18th
birthday. Therefore, to be in full compliance with the law, a man
turning 18 is required to register during the period of time
beginning 30 days before, until 30 days after his 18th birthday...a
60-day window.
Late registrations are accepted, but not once a man reaches age 26.
Men who do not register within the 60-day window are technically
in violation of the law and should register as soon as possible. A
male non-citizen, who first takes up permanent residence in the
U.S. when he is at least 18 years old, but not yet 26 years old, must
register within 30 days of becoming a resident. If he first enters
the U.S. as a resident when he is 26 years old or older, he does not
register with Selective Service because he is too old to register.
Male non-citizens in the U.S. temporarily (valid student or visitor
visa, diplomatic corps, etc.) do not register.
Early Submission: It is now possible for a man to submit
registration information early, as long he is at least 17 years and 3
months old. Selective Service will keep his information on file
and process it automatically later in the year, when the man is
within 30 days of reaching his 18th birthday. An acknowledgment
card will be mailed to the man when his registration is processed.
To submit early registration information, follow the same
procedures as men who are 18 through 25 years old, listed below.

REGISTER ON-LINE: Young men may now register on-line with
Selective Service.
AT THE POST OFFICE:
Selective Service "mail-back"
registration forms are available at any Post Office. A man can fill
it out, sign it, affix postage, and mail it to Selective Service,
without the involvement of the postal clerk. Men living overseas
may register at any U.S. Embassy or consular office.
BY MAIL: A young man may also register by filling out a
Reminder Mailback Card. Selective Service sends this card to
many young men around the time they turn 18. Mailback cards are
also available at some post offices. A man can fill out the card at
home and mail it directly to Selective Service. Forms will be sent
to: Selective Service System, Registration Information Office, P.O.
Box 94638, Palatine, IL 60094-4638.

2014 - 2015 INFORME ACREDITACIÓN
¡La visita de nuestra acreditación viene en el 21 y 22
de abril. Nos hemos estado preparando para la visita del equipo
de examen externo desde nuestra visita de 2009 concluyó! (Por
cierto, lo hemos conseguido la mayor puntuación posible
durante la visita, por lo que estamos seguros de que nuestra
puntuación esta vez va a ser igualmente excepcional. )El
propósito del proceso de acreditación es que nos mueve hacia
adelante y a ayudarnos a mantenernos centrados en
proporcionar el mejor ambiente de aprendizaje posible para
todos los estudiantes.
Usted puede estar interesado en conocer un poco acerca de
los criterios utilizados por el equipo visitante para determinar si
estamos o no tener éxito. El primer componente es el Resumen
Ejecutivo. Debido a que cada escuela tiene su propia historia
que contar, el equipo visitante está interesado en el contexto en
que la enseñanza y el aprendizaje que se realiza y cómo esto

El rendimiento de los estudiantes de diagnóstico nos
proporciona un proceso para informar sobre resultados

determinar si los estudiantes han aprendido material necesario.
Esta parte del informe sirve como un recurso para nosotros para

EAST HIGH GANADORES
La Asociación Nacional de La Educación Multicultural
(NOMBRE) conferencia que se celebró un concurso de
ensayos en Utah, para estudiantes de la escuela media y
la preparatoria en el mes de febrero. El nombre
conferencia de secundaria ha sido galardonado con dos y
tres estudiantes de la escuela secundaria los ganadores

CÉSAR CHÁVEZ
El Distrito escolar de Salt Lake tendrá el concurso anual
César Chávez invita a los estudiantes de todas las edades
para responder a la pregunta " ¿Qué hará para ser un
líder de justicia social? ¿Qué causa? ¿le apasiona? ¿Qué
va a hacer usted para lograr un cambio en relación con
esta causa?" Los estudiantes pueden participar en las
artes visuales o artes del lenguaje. Los ganadores fueron
homenajeados en una casa abierta y una galería paseo
por los mestizos. Los ganadores de este alta en la
categoría artes del lenguaje se Alondra Miranda (3er
lugar) y Nelly Yamileth Rivera Matute ( Mención de
Honor).
DISTRITO ARTE MOSTRAR RESULTADOS
El Salt Lake City los Distritos Escolares Arte secundaria en
el mes de marzo se celebró en la Universidad de
Utah Educación Artística. East High School tuvo una gran
representación de muchos tipos diferentes de arte, tales
como dibujos, pinturas, fotografías, proyectos de diseño,

Honorífica: Litzy Guzman, Thomas Broadbent,
Lucas Idstrom, Sara Wright, Taylor Duong, Andre

LACROSSE DE EAST HIGH
El equipo varsity lacrosse es un gran comienzo de la
temporada. El equipo está encabezado por los Seniors Jake
Parkin, Kort Johnson, Eric Coombs y Tyson Holt. Junior
destacar Mikey Vetter, Andrew Wilkinson, Joey Anderson,
Christian Fletcher y Seth McConkie. El equipo ha tenido
