VISITING TEAM ACCREDITATION REPORT
Congratulations to everyone for showing our Accreditation
Visiting Team what a great school East High is. We received
the highest marks possible – a Five-Year Recommendation. We
achieved this high ranking, not because we don’t have
challenges, or room for improvement, but because we
recognize our challenges and have created a plan for meeting
them. The Visiting team was led by Jake Hunt, a principal from
Utah County. Seven other educators made up the team. The
team reported that all members of the EHS community made
them feel welcome, with the teachers being especially inviting
and accommodating during their visit.
The members of the team made 80 classroom observations
during the two days they spent in the building. They evaluated
the extent to which our students are provided opportunities to
learn. They looked for evidence of: equitable learning, high
expectations, supportive learning, active learning, progress
monitoring and feedback, well-managed learning, and digital

learning. They were most impressed with the diversity of our
student body, and the support they receive both in the
classroom and in other areas of their education, such as sports,
clubs, etc.
They had personal interviews with nearly 200 people:
administrators, faculty members, staff, students, and parents.
They were particularly impressed by their interviews with our
students. (The members of the Visiting Team chose random
students to talk to – we didn’t “set them up.”) They reported
that our students feel as though their teachers care about them,
have high expectations for them, and are willing to put in extra
work to help them achieve their goals. The Visiting Team was
convinced during their visit that counselors, coaches, teachers,
administrators, prevention specialists, and all of the adults in
the community want them to be successful, and to feel good
about setting and reaching high goals.
The team was impressed by the support of the community. The
parents they interviewed shared their experiences, not only as
parents who are interested in participating in the educational
process as their students attend the school and participate in a
wide variety of programs, but they also relayed information
about how their children were learning and accomplishing
important goals with the support of the faculty and staff.
The entity that accredits schools is called AdvancEd. Their
motto is “Create a world of opportunities for every learner.”
The Visiting Accreditation Team uses the standards and rating
scale published and supported by AdvancEd. East High School
earned a score of 295.51 points during their evaluation. The
average score is 282.79, so you can see why the Team was so
impressed with our school.
The Team identified two strengths that they gave us special
commendation for. The first was how extensive our student
support is, they were impressed by the fact that all of our
students have an equal opportunity to learn and be successful.
And the second strength they noted was the extent to which we
are inclusive towards families from across our boundaries.
They particularly noted that we conduct Parent/Teacher
conferences both at East and at Glendale Middle school to
accommodate parents’ schedules, and have translators on hand
to assist in communication.
Two improvement opportunities were recognized by the
Visiting Team. The first was to increase the infrastructure of
available technology. They saw teachers using advanced
technology during instruction, but noted that our students need
more access. The second suggestion was to incorporate a
“formal” structure where each student has an adult advocate
who knows them well. We already have plans in consideration
to initiate an advisory period in the near future.
The final written report of the Accreditation Team Visit will be
published in June, 2015. It will be made available to anyone
who wants to read the entire document. In the meanwhile,
please know that we recognize what a privilege it is to work
with your students every day and thank you for your support
and investment in their education.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Juniors, be sure to schedule an appointment with Alisa Kearl,
Scholarship Coordinator, to learn about applying for
scholarships in your senior year. Most scholarships are
only available to high school seniors. If your student is
planning on going on an LDS Mission or other service right out
of high school, it is best to apply for college and scholarships
during their senior year and then defer. The opportunities may
not be available to them when they get back. There are
scholarships available to students regardless of grades, test
scores, or legal status. To schedule an appointment with Ms.
Kearl, call the Counseling Center receptionist at 801-584-2923.
EARN AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE WHILE STILL
IN HIGH SCHOOL!
East High School students may earn an Associate degree while
in high school, and qualify for a New Century Scholarship to
help pay for the remainder of hours required for a Bachelor's
degree at a Utah college/university. The Associate Degree may
be earned in General Studies, or Math/Science. The optimal
time to begin is during the 10th grade year in high
school. Orientation meetings are being held this spring, so
contact your East High counselor for more information!
HOPE FOR UTAH/ HOPE FOR EAST HIGH
The bad news is that Utah ranks in the top 5 states in the US for
its youth suicide rate.
The good news is that East High is starting a student HOPE
SQUAD. Squad members will be trained in suicide awareness
and prevention so that they can function as a peer support
team to provide friendship, support and encouragement to
peers who may be struggling. Students on Hope Squad will not
act as counselors, but will be guided as how to best help and
then refer another peer to a trusted adult for help. Our squad
members can be the eyes and ears of our student body.
The HOPE SQUAD will make a difference at East. If you
have a son/daughter that you feel would be interested in

HOPE FOR TOMORROW
CONCERTO NIGHT
All students are invited to attend the last brown bag lunch in
this year’s series. Come join on us during either lunch on
Auditions for the May 19th Concerto Night will be held on May
1st, after school in Mrs. Maxfield's room. Both instrumental
and vocal selections are welcome, as well as non-concerto
pieces. All interested students may sign up for a time slot in
Mrs. Maxfield's room prior to May 1st.
East High Concerto Night will be held Tuesday, May 19th in the
Dumke Music Hall (University of Utah, Libby-Gardner Bldg.) at
7:00! Free concert, everyone welcome. Come support East
High's talented musicians in their solo performances!!

PARENT INVOLVEMENT AT EAST
Parents are you looking for a way to get involved at East
High? Why not considering joining our School Community
Council. Our School Community Council will be having
our last meeting of the school year Monday, May 4th at
4:00 pm in room B402. We will begin the process of
seating next year’s board. This is a great opportunity to
be involved in some important decisions that affect our

EAST HIGH SCHOOL AVID PROVES DREAMS
DO COME TRUE
This year's AVID grads have done outstanding. The AVID
graduating class of 29 students is a classroom full of first
generation, college bound students who set their goals on their
tomorrow! All 29 have been accepted to college! While
scholarship award season is just beginning - over 50% of them
have already been offered scholarships totally over $475,000!
They are off to Salt Lake Community College, Snow, UVU,
BYU, Weber, Utah State, Dixie State, the University of Utah
and Westminster College. Among the graduates, AVID
celebrates the recipients of the National Horatio Scholarship
Award - Carlos Martinez; the SOMOS Full Tuition Award Jazmin May; National Dell Scholarship - Lily Ceja as well as
many other distinguished and deserving scholarships and
awards.
The AVID graduates plan to become their
generation’s leaders in medicine, aviation, business, science,
technology, music and art. AVID is Advancement Via
Individual Determination! These students set a goal to achieve
and succeed - to go beyond what many thought they would.
They are dedicated, bright, students and it has been my honor
to travel this journey with them. Congratulations to the East
High AVID Graduates of 2015!
AFTERNOON EAST CAFÉ
The Afternoon East Café is now open! Anyone is welcome to
come and grab something to eat in the lunchroom. The Café is
open Monday-Thursday from 3:45 until 4:15. All food is free.
Please stop by for an afternoon snack, we would love to see
you!

Please remember to visit our new food pantry! Contact a
member of the administration or Barbara Matkin for details or
if you would like to visit the pantry. The pantry has a variety of
food items available for free, including cereals, pastas and
snacks to make complete meals.

check out a variety of summer and year-round positions.
You could work for the US Postal Service, Lagoon, State
Farm Insurance, The Hogle Zoo and many more! Jobs
available in data entry, customer service, construction,
lifeguard, and camp counselors to name a few. Pay rates
range from $7.50-$15.74. Come see Mrs. Powell or Mrs.

EXCELLENT WRITING PAYS OFF
Emma (Mei) Benson through her Creative Writing Class has
won third place for the high school level contest in the state of
Utah for Letters About Literature. Her letter to Rick Riordan
about Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus series was
evaluated by a panel of judges who read each of the letters that
advanced to state level judging. She will receive a check for
$50 from the Utah State Library and her letter will be shared on
the Utah State Library website.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT NEWS:
VOLLEYBALL
Over the past month Student Government has remained busy
fulfilling their board of control duties. Together the Student
Government officers coordinated and led an amazing and
activity filled Spirit Bowl, which united and brought spirit to
the entire student body. As well as planning the Spirit Bowl
they also helped with the success and planning of the keys to
success assembly and Junior Prom. Student Government is
currently creating invitations for all seniors off the East Student
Body to be invited to the Senior Prom on May 16th at the
Jewish Community Center, along with the planning of Senior
Prom the senior class officers are preparing for graduation held
on June 5th. Student Government is doing everything they can
from creating new ways to unite class spirit with ideas such as
class barbeques, to shooting and incorporating final videos and
assemblies to end the year spirit filled and with excitement for
the end of the school year.
Volleyball spring training will continue through July 3 and while
school is out, we will also be doing sand Volleyball training.

EAST LACROSSE
The lacrosse season is winding down and the East teams have
had a great season. The Varsity team is headed to the playoffs

and their first playoff game will be on May 6 . The team has
been led by a great group of seniors: Brian Frerichs, Eric
Coombs, Issac Anthony, Jake Parkin, Kort Johnson, Nathan
Burt, Oakley Miller, Seth McDonough, Tomas Ashton, and
Tyson Holt. Thanks to all of them for a great effort this year!
Our JV and Freshmen/Sophomore teams have also been
outstanding this year. They both have won a lot of games and
have earned the respect of the entire lacrosse community.
This is the first year that East has fielded a Freshmen team and
they have been winning some very big games. They have
beaten some of the strongest teams in the
t state including Park
City, Skyline and Brighton. Look for great things to come from
our players in the future!
Thanks to the East Administration for all the support that our
players have received this year.

EQUIPO VISITANTE ACREDITACIÓN INFORME
Felicidades a todos para mostrar nuestra acreditación equipo
visitante lo que una gran escuela East High. Nos dieron la
puntuación más alta posible, la Recomendación quinquenal.
Hemos logrado este alto nivel, no porque no tengamos
problemas, o margen de mejora, pero porque reconocemos los
desafíos y han creado un plan para cumplir con ellos. El equipo
visitante fue dirigido por Jake Hunt, uno de los principales
condados de Utah. Otros siete educadores en el equipo. El
equipo informó de que todos los miembros de la unidad EHS
comunidad hizo que se sientan bienvenidos, con los profesores
que la hicieron especialmente atractivo y complaciente durante
su visita.
Los miembros del equipo hizo 80 observaciones de aula
durante los dos días que pasaron en el edificio. Se evaluó el
grado en que nuestros estudiantes están provistos de

impresionados por sus entrevistas con nuestros estudiantes.
(Los miembros del equipo visitante ha elegido al azar para
hablar con los estudiantes, y no "de") se informó de que
nuestros estudiantes se sientan como si sus maestros
preocuparse por ellos, tener grandes expectativas para ellos, y
están dispuestos a poner en trabajo extra para ayudarles a
alcanzar sus metas. El equipo visitante se ha convencido
durante su visita que los asesores, entrenadores, profesores,
administradores, especialistas en prevención, y todos los
adultos de la comunidad, quieren su éxito, y para sentirse bien
acerca de la configuración y alcanzadas elevadas metas.
El equipo quedó impresionado por el apoyo de la comunidad.
Los padres fueron entrevistados compartieron sus experiencias,
no sólo los padres, que están interesados en participar en el
proceso educativo, los estudiantes asisten a la escuela y
participar en una amplia variedad de programas, sino que
también transmiten información acerca de cómo sus hijos
fueron aprendiendo y logrando objetivos importantes con el
apoyo de la facultad y el personal.
La entidad que acredita las escuelas se llama avanzado. Su lema
es "crear un mundo de oportunidades para todos los
estudiantes." El equipo visitante Acreditación utiliza las normas
publicadas y escala de calificación y con el apoyo de avanzada.
East High School obtuvo una puntuación de 295,51 puntos en

OBTENER UN GRADO DE ASOCIADO EN LA
ESCUELA SECUNDARIA.
East High School los estudiantes pueden obtener un grado de
asociado en la escuela secundaria, y calificar para un Nuevo
Siglo Beca para ayudar a pagar el resto de horas necesarias para
la obtención de un título universitario en un Utah universidad o
colegio. El grado de asociado se puede ganar en Estudios
Generales, o matemáticas/Ciencia. El momento óptimo para

ESPERANZA (HOPE) DE UTAH/ ESPERANZA DE
EAST HIGH
La mala noticia es que Utah esta en quinta posición en los
EE.UU. por su tasa de suicidio juvenil.
La buena noticia es que East está comenzando un estudiante
BRIGADA ESPERANZA. Los miembros del escuadrón serán
capacitados en conciencia y prevención del suicidio para que
puedan funcionar como un apoyo a los compañeros de equipo
ofrecen amistad, apoyo y aliento a sus compañeros que tengan
dificultades. Los estudiantes de la Esperanza Fútbol no se
actuar como asesores, pero será guiado como la mejor forma de

EAST HIGH SCHOOL AVID
SUEÑOS SE HACEN REALIDAD
DEMUESTRA
Este año, los estudiantes graduados de AVID hicieron un
excelente trabajo. En la clase de AVID se gradúan 29
estudiantes es una aula llena de la primera generación, los
estudiantes universitarios que fijen sus objetivos en su futuro!
Los 29 han sido aceptados a la universidad! Mientras beca
temporada apenas está comenzando, más del 50% de ellos ya se
han ofrecido becas totalmente más de $475.000 ! Están fuera de
Salt Lake Community College, SNOW, UVU, BYU, Weber,
Estado de Utah, Dixie Estado, de la Universidad de Utah y
Westminster College. Entre los graduados, AVID celebra los

UN EXCELENTE ENSAYO HA SIDO PAGADO
Emma (Mei) Benson a través de su escritura creativa
Clase tiene obtuvo el tercer lugar de la escuela
secundaria concurso en el estado de Utah, para las
cartas de la literatura. Su carta a Rick Riordan sobre
Percy Jackson y los héroes de Olympus serie
fue evaluado por un panel de jueces que leer cada una

cheque de $50 de la Biblioteca Estatal de Utah y su carta

GOBIERNO ESTUDIANTIL NOTICIAS
Durante el mes pasado gobierno estudiantil ha permanecido
ocupado cumpliendo su junta de funciones de control. Junto al
estudiante los funcionarios del Gobierno coordinado y dirigido
una increíble y espíritu Recipiente lleno de actividades, que
unidos al espíritu y toda la población estudiantil. Así como la
planificación de las Espíritu Recipiente también ayudaron con
el éxito y la planificación de las claves del éxito y Junior Prom.
Gobierno Estudiantil está creando en las invitaciones a todos
los ancianos de los alumnos de esta institución que se invitará a
la Prom el 16 mayo en el centro de la comunidad judía, junto
con la planificación de Prom la clase de los oficiales superiores
se están preparando para la graduación celebrada el 5 junio.
Gobierno Estudiantil está haciendo todo lo que pueden de crear
nuevas maneras de unir con espíritu de clase clase ideas tales
como barbacoas, a disparar y la incorporación vídeos finales y
de los conjuntos para terminar el año lleno del espíritu santo y
de entusiasmo por el fin del año escolar.

CLASE DE 2015 FESTEJO DE GRADUACIÓN
Todos los que se graduaron los ancianos están invitados a
asistir a la Fiesta de graduación

a todos ellos por el gran esfuerzo este año!
Nuestro EP y novatos/Diseñadora equipos han destacado
también este año. Ambos han ganado un montón de juegos y
se han ganado el respeto de toda la comunidad lacrosse. Este
es el primer año en que Oriente Estudiantes ha enviado un
equipo y se han visto ganar algunos juegos muy grande. Han
ganado a algunos de los equipos más fuertes en el estado,
incluyendo Park City, Horizonte y Brighton. Buscar grandes
cosas por venir de nuestros jugadores en el futuro.

Jugadoras de fútbol de chicas para temporada 2015
comenzará 3 Ago rd. Acondicionado se iniciará la semana del 8
junio con sesiones Lunes, Miércoles y Viernes por la mañana
en 7:30 en el estadio. Las niñas tendrán que completar la

LACROSSE EAST
La temporada de lacrosse está concluyendo y los equipos East
han tenido una gran temporada. El equipo de Varsity está
encabezado a la liguilla y su primer juego del playoff será el 6
mayo. El equipo ha sido dirigido por un gran grupo de
personas de la tercera edad: Brian Frerichs, Eric Coombs, Issac
