My Dear Parishioners:
This past Tuesday, May 13, was a milestone day for
the Diocese of Brooklyn. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio
dedicated our new Co-Cathedral and consecrated the new
altar. St. Joseph’s parish was founded in 1858 and the current
church was built in 1914. The church had fallen into disrepair
due to small attendance and no funds. It is one of the largest
churches in the diocese and St. James Cathedral was too small
for large functions. Bishop DiMarzio petitioned Pope Benedict
XVI to make St. Joseph’s the co-cathedral for the diocese and
as one of his last acts as Pope, Benedict declared it as such. A
lot of repairs went into the church to make it worthy and safe.
I saw the church about a year ago and I could see its former
glory and its potential for glory again. That did not prepare me
for the beauty I saw this past Tuesday. It is now one of, if not
the, most beautiful churches in New York. Bishop DiMarzio
said in his homily, “In the house of Joseph, there is always
room for Mary.” As a way to demonstrate the ethnic diversity
of our diocese, the different ethnic apostolates contributed to
the painting of images of the Blessed Virgin Mary throughout
the co-cathedral, especially on the ceiling. When I walked in,
my eyes kept looking around at the beauty. As I mentioned in
my letter last week “beauty appreciated leads us to God.”
There are twenty-two images of the Blessed Mother located
throughout the co-cathedral, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our
Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of
Altagracia, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception are a few
of the images one can see. As a priest of the diocese I was
truly proud of what we accomplished. I am excited for many
of you to go and visit St. Joseph’s Co-Cathedral, which will be
used for large diocesan events to come in the future. Look for
photos online as well; I am sure that you will be amazed by
the beauty as I was.

Youth group is up and running with our Life in the Spirit
Seminar from 2:30-4:30 pm at the St. Mike’s Room. Invite
your friends for sports competitions, snacks, music and a

“Seek” Young Adult Gathering Today!
Our “Seek” young adult gathering will be held on today May
18th from 5:00-6:30 pm. Join us for a time of Eucharistic
Adoration, contemporary worship music, reflection and a
social after the holy hour. Invite other young adults you know
into this experience!
Daughters of the King Continues!
In this series, we will discuss topics such as dating, true love
and your identity as a beloved daughter of the
Heavenly King; although these workshops are required for
young ladies that wish to celebrate their “Quinceañera” and
Sweet 16 in this parish, any girl can attend! For more

Warriors of the King Continues!
Have you ever asked yourself what it means to be a real man
in the eyes of God? What is true manhood? How to live your
call to be a leader, a protector and a provider? Then the
Warriors of the King workshops are for you. It is seven
consecutive Tuesdays, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm in the Divine
Mercy room; the next one is on Tuesday, May 20th. The

Youth Music Training
Ordination of Fr. Evans Julce
Evans Julce has been with us for the last six years as a seminarian.
He was ordained a transitional deacon back in September and will
ordained a priest of Jesus Christ on Saturday, June 28 at St. Joseph’s
Co-Cathedral by Bishop DiMarzio. Soon-to-be Father Evans has
asked to celebrate his First Mass as a priest here at Presentation of the
Blessed Virgin Mary at the 9 am Mass. He will have a reception after
the Mass in O’Brien Hall where he will impart his blessing. Please
pray for him in these last weeks of preparation.
If you are knowledgeable in music or are interested in
learning call Gilbert at (718) 739-0241 ext. 205. Training
will take different hours starting Thursdays at 4 pm. Here is
the schedule: 4-5 pm Drums and Percussion, 5-6 pm Guitar
and Bass, and 6-7 pm Piano and Keyboard. Vocal training is
on Mondays from 7-8 pm.
May Crowning
Congratulations!
Salvadora Gomez, Yomara Hernandez and Wilfredo Machado will be
graduating from the Diocesan Pastoral Institute on Monday, May 19
after studying for three years. They have all been assisting in our
baptismal preparation program as well as working on other projects.
Faria Sookdeo, who assists in the Evangelization Center, will be
receiving her Masters Degree in Theology on Sunday, May 18 from
St. John’s University. Please pray for these parishioners who have
done us proud by studying in order to serve the Lord better.

Saint Bernardine of Siena, priest
Saint Bernardine died in 1444; O.F.M.; famous reformer and eloquent
preacher who traveled throughout Italy; encouraged devotion to the
Holy Name of Jesus (Jan. 3); known for his use of the monogram, IHS
(an abbreviation of the Greek name for Jesus; patron of advertisers and
advertising; invoked against hoarseness.

El pasado martes, 13 de mayo, fue un día marcado por la Diócesis de
Brooklyn. El Obispo DiMarzio dedicó nuestra nueva Co-Catedral y
consagró el nuevo altar. La parroquia San José fue fundada en 1858 y
la iglesia actual fue construida en 1914. La iglesia se había caído sin
esperanza alguna por la poca asistencia y porque no había fondos. Es
una de las iglesias más grandes de la diócesis y la Catedral St. James
era muy pequeña para funciones grandes. El Obispo DiMarzio le
presentó una petición al Papa Benedicto XVI para que hiciera a San
José la co-catedral para la diócesis y como uno de las últimas
acciones del Papa, Benedicto lo declaró como tal. Se hicieron
muchas reparaciones en la iglesia para hacerla valer y para que sea
segura. Yo vi la iglesia hace un año y podía ver la gloria anterior y la
potencial de gloria otra vez. Eso no me preparó para ver la belleza de
este martes pasado. Es ahora uno de las iglesias más hermosas de
New York. El Obispo DiMarzio dijo en su homilía, “En la casa de
José, siempre hay espacio para María.” Es una manera de demostrar
la diversidad étnica de nuestra diócesis, los diferentes apostolados
étnicos contribuyeron en la pintura de las imágenes de la Santísima
Virgen María por toda la co- catedral, especialmente la del techo.
Cuando yo entré, mis ojos miraban alrededor la belleza. Como había
mencionado en mi carta la semana pasada “la belleza que se aprecia
nos guía a Dios”. Hay veintidós imágenes de la Santísima Madre
localizada en toda la co-catedral, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe,
Nuestra Señora de Fátima, Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, Nuestra
Señora de la Altagracia, Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada
Concepción son algunas de las imágenes que uno puede ver. Como
sacerdote de la diócesis estoy verdaderamente orgulloso de lo que se
ha logrado. Estoy entusiasmado de que muchos de ustedes vayan a
visitar la Co-Catedral de San José, que será usado para eventos
Diocesanos grandes que se aproximan en el futuro. Busquen por fotos
en la internet también; Estoy seguro de que se sorprenderán como yo
por la belleza.

Ordenación del Padre Evans Julce
Evans Julce ha estado con nosotros por los últimos seis años como
seminarista. El fue ordenado como diácono transicional en septiembre y será
ordenado sacerdote de Jesucristo el sábado, 28 de junio en la Co-Catedral St.
Joseph por el Obispo DiMarzio. Evans quien pronto será Padre pidió celebrar
su primera Misa como sacerdote aquí en Presentación de la Santísima Virgen
María en la misa de las 9 am. El tendrá una recepción después de la misa en el
salón O’Brien donde impartirá su bendición. Por favor oren por él en estas
últimas semanas de preparación.

Salvadora Gómez, Yomara Hernández y Wilfredo Machado se graduaran del
Instituto Pastoral Diocesano el lunes, 19 de Mayo después de estudiar por tres
años. Ellos han asistido en nuestro programa de preparación para el bautismo
y también trabajando en otros proyectos.
Faria Sookdeo, asiste en el Centro de Evangelización, recibirá su maestría en
Teología el domingo, 18 de Mayo de la universidad St. John’s. Por favor oren
por estos feligreses que nos han hecho orgullosos por haber estudiado para
poder servir al Señor mejor.
